at the Jackson public schools' Career Development Center for Vocational Education. The cosmetology class is designed for persons wanting to receive state licenses and to be recognized as beauty and hair care professionals. The course is the first of four 18-week sessions necessary to prepare students to take the state cosmetology exam. Local spelling bees planned by 60 schools The Mississippi Division of American Cancer Society, the Gannett Foundation, and The Clarion Ledger and Jackson Daily News co-sponsors of the National Spelling Bee in Mississippi have announced that more than 60 schools throughout the state will conduct local spelling bees through April 1 2 to prepare over 6,000 students for the 1985 Scripps-Howard National Spelling Bee.

Local spelling bees will help the students advance through district and state competitions to represent Mississippi June 3-7 at the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. The three top winners at the six district spelling bee April 12 will receive trophies and become eligible to participate in the state spelling bee April 26 in Jackson. Turnbull new Ole Miss museum director The Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning has approved Dr. Lucy Turnbull as the new director of the University of Mississippi Museums in Oxford. Turnbull is a professor of classical archaeology and art at the university and has brought numerous traveling exhibitions and grants to the museum.

She is a member of the American Association of Museums, the Archaeological Institute of America, the Mississippi Museums Association, and the Southeastern Museums Conference. Alexander new teacher group president Beverly Alexander, a teacher of gifted students in the Moss Point public schools, was recently elected president of the Mississippi Association for the Talented and Gifted (MATAG), a statewide organization which supports and advocates gifted and talented education. Others elected were Melissa Grantham of Jackson, president-elect; Beverly Davis of Grenada, first vice-president; Bettie Rich of Ocean Springs, second vice-president; Marie Cayson of Tupelo, secretary; and Dale Krane of Stark-ville, treasurer. Marx named Ole Miss vice-chancellor The Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning has approved Dr. Morris L.

Marx as the new academic vice-chancellor at Ole Miss. He will assume his responsibilities in June. Marx is a career mathematician serving as interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Oklahoma. USM gets grant to study women and stress The School of Nursing at the University of Southern Mississippi has received a $2,000 grant to fund a study of women and stress. Two assistant professors of nursing will begin collecting data in June and continue through February 1986, when a report will be made on the analyzed data.

The study will consider how women identify diseases associated with stress. It is being funded by the Nurse's Association of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. UT names Walker outstanding alumnus The University of Tennessee Dental Alumni Association selected Dr. Kirby P. Walker Jr.

of Jackson to receive the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry's Outstanding Alumnus Award for 1985. Walker was named the recipient of the association's highest award at their annual meeting last month. The long-time Jackson dentist announced the successful conclusion of the association's year-long renewal campaign to raise $1 million for dental research at the university's College of Dentistry. JSU's pre-nursing program gets grant The Office of Pre-professional Health Careers at Jackson State University has been awarded a $143,316 grant to strengthen its Pre-Nursing Training Program over a one-year period. The grant, donated by the Department of Human Services' Division of Nursing, will enable Jackson State to recruit, train and place pre-nursing students into professional schools of nursing.

The program is available to prospective college students who have chosen nursing as a career, said Dr. Charles H. Spann, program director and associate professor of biology at Jackson State. Forty high school graduates with above-average grade point averages will be recruited to participate in an intensive five-week summer component of the program. Social science seminar slated for iMC Social science teachers in Jackson and surrounding areas are invited to apply for full fellowships in the 1985 American Studies Seminar June 3 through July 5 at Mississippi College. She is treasurer of the National Association of Vocational Home Economics Teachers and is past president of the Mississippi Association of Vocational Home Economics. JSU student to address school conference A student representative of the Jackson State University Chapter of the American Marketing Association will speak at the seventh annual AMA International Collegiate Conference, being held Thursday through Saturday in New Orleans.

Sandy Hickombottom, president of the Jackson State chapter, will speak in a sesson titled "Dynamic Strategies for Recruiting More Student Chapter Members" during the three-day conference. Prancing J-Settes to hold clinic, audition The Jackson State University Prancing J-Settes, a female dance team that provides halftime entertainment at the university's football games, will hold its annual spring clinic and auditions April 12 and 13 on campus. All high school seniors and students already enrolled at Jackson State are invited to audition for the group. Participants are required to perform a one-minute dance routine. Initial auditions will be held at 6 p.m.

Friday, April 12, in the F.D. Hall Music Center, and preliminary auditions will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at the T.B. Ellis Physical Education Complex. Students who cannot attend Friday's auditions will be permitted to audition at the preliminary auditions Saturday.
