COURIER-POST, CameUn, N. Friday, Mdy 5, 1969 26 'Faces 9 Has Greatest Tag for Metier WemMh feeling neglected and rejected, nominated for Academy Merit Scholar Va. Tech Wins Youth Of Delanco By STEPHEN ALLEN Courier-Post Staff By Dr. S. L.

ANDELMAN "FACES" is undoubtedly one of the greatest American on sit at home watching television. movies that has ever been made. But you should be warned at Awards. The film seems even more realistic with its having been filmed in black and white (When was the last time you saw a black and white American movie?) and in cinema verite style. One could call it a "glorified home movie" and it has been called this but this is a little unfair.

"Faces" is a movie to be seen at least once by anyone who is interested in what is happening in film. It is playing at the Ritz Theater. the outset that it also is probably THE most depressing (EDITOR'S NOTE This is another in a series of profiles of Smith Jersey winners of national merit scholarships.) I American movie that has been made in a long, long time. goes with some girlfriends to a local discotheque and jointly they pick up a bright-eyed, grinning young stud (Seymour Cassel) and bring him home. Hubby finally goes to bed with prostitute and finds it less than wonderful; and wifey finally goes to bed with young stud and finds it so degrading that she tries to kill herself.

Hubby comes home the next morning and finds what wifey has done and life goes on and on and on. There is no resolution of the plot, there is no climax. It just goes on. Much like life. DIRECTOR CASSAVETES DKLANCO Charles Winkelspecht son of Mr WHEN an overweight friend of mine is asked what he does about exercise, his answer is always the same: "Whenever I get the urge to exercise, I rest for about 15 minutes until the urge goes away." Unfortunately, this facetious attitude is the approach many Americans have to exercise and physical culture.

This is why we have a reputation for being sports-minded, but not sportsmen. Our spectator sports football, baseball, horse racing and the like attract millions. Even more millions and Mrs. Winkelspecht of 713 Hickory is headed for Virginia Polytechnic Institute in the fall with the help of a four It is perhaps the most realistic American movie that has ever been made which leads us to the question: Do we really want realism? If escape is what you want when you go to the movies (And what's wrong with then "Faces" is not the film for you. year National Merit TIIK HOME-BOUND fans primary exercise during a game consists of a short walk to the refrigerator for a snack or a beer.

The fan who actually goes to the game limits his physical exertion to climbing the stadium ramps and steps, overusing his vocal cords, if the game is a close one, and very probably putting a little extra strain on his heart. Of course, millions of Americans do participate in various sports personally. Golfing is an example. And this used to be fine exercise before someone thought of using a motorized cart to save the walk between holes. Our greatest participation Scholarship.

The 18-year-old senior at Holy sport is bowling. About 5 million Americans men, women and children bowl fairly regularly, but even this is limited to one or maybe two nights a week. ANOTHER growing participant sport is pocket billiards. And you know how much exercise is involved in a game such as this. In the home, the chores which used to occupy a full day are now accomplished in a few hours with the aid of automatic washers and dryers, dishwashers, ironers and, of course, canned and frozen foods.

This leaves the housewife with at least a few hours to engage in coffee klatchcs or bridge or canasta games. I'm not saying she's not busy, mind you, I'm just saying she has, or at least should have, more leisure time than her mother did. ALL THIS MEANS most of us get a lot less physical exercise than we should. Cross High School, Riverside, CHARLES F. WINKELSPECHT JR.
