Maury Mckmaii San4arait By BERNARD DREW Gannett News Service Peter Hunt's "Death Hunt" is an intelligent, exciting and breathtak-ingly beautiful film based on the 1931 Royal Canadian Mounted Police search for Albert Johnson in the Yukon. The movie stars Charles Bronson as the quarry and Lee Marvin as the hunter, and both are in peak form. Albert Johnson is a loner in the Canadian Northwest Territories, who stumbles onto a cruel dogfight which leaves one dog nearly dead. Outraged, he purchases the animal for $200, tossing the money contemptuously to the dog's vicious owner, Ed Lauter. Lauter is not MOVIE REVIEW happy with Johnson's attitude and immediately vows vengeance.

HE AND some other trappers pursue Johnson to his log cabin where he has nursed the animal back to health. They fire at the cabin and Johnson returns the volley, killing one of them. Grizzled, rum-soaked, disillusioned Sergeant Lee Marvin of the Mounties is reluctantly brought into action and compelled to lead the manhunt for Johnson. Accompanying him are Mounties Carl Weathers, idealistic young rookie Andrew Stevens, Louter and JAZZ in South Jersey Auletto's Proudly Presents an evening with FREE TICKETS SUMMER FESTIVAL otttie PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA at the WOODY till and his new 'The Burning' fizzles under barrage of gore a MANN MUSIC CENTER TUESDAY. By VARIETY Despite the presence of five screenwriters, "The Burning" could have been written by a computer. A barrage of cliches makes the picture in many ways the reductio ad absur-dum of the horror genre and might most appropriately have been titled "Leatherface Goes to Summer Camp on Friday the 13th." The shocker category will undergo further burnout with release of this film.

A synopsis tells it all: Horribly burned by a group of teen pranksters, a camp counselor returns after five years of unsuccessful skin grafts to terrorize, mutilate and permanently dispose of as many youngsters as possible, including one of his victimizers who is now working as a counselor. THE DISFIGURED cretin wields giant shears in doing his dirty work, which often takes place when else? after juves have indulged in naughty sex play. Despite a bagful of red herrings and phony shock cuts to scenes, it doesn't take long to see that director Tom Maylam telegraphs most of the genuine killings with greased-lens shots.and rev-ups of Rick Wake-man's synthesized score, so the picture is not heavy in the suspense department Inevitably, most of the running time has aspiring he-men and nubile babes preoccupied in coy flirtation, water sports and assorted inanities, captured where it all happened in western New York. BRIAN Matthews and Leah Ayres are the upstanding, responsible leads, while Brian Backer has the Alan Sherman-Woody Allen part as the sensitive schlemiel stuck in the woods for the summer with all those insects. By far the most amusing of all the cast members is Larry Joshua, a wise-guy bully with weird Klaus Kinski overtones.
