The com-petition was rough enough for New Orleans Saints offensive tackle Daren Gilbert, even before he had to spend the summer in and out of hospitals with a variety of ailments. Gilbert, going into his fifth season with the Saints, was a second-round draft pick in 1985. He got on the wrong side of coach Jim Mora in Mora's first season, 1986, when Jim Dombrowski went down with a broken foot.

Gilbert had let himself slip out of shape, and it showed during the first workout after Dombrowski's injury. The Saints picked up free agent tackle Bill Contz, and he started the next game, moving ahead of Gilbert after three days of practice. Gilbert learned a lesson from that, and he kept himself in good physical condition through 1987 and 1988, getting back on Mora's good side. And Gilbert was in good shape in February of this year, too. "In March, I went in for surgery for a ruptured disk," Gilbert said.

"A week later, I went in and my lungs had become swollen. Pleurisy, they called it. "Two months later, I got pneumonia in the left lung and a blood clot in my right lung. I was finally cleared to work out on July 1. 1 only got to work out in May and July." Injury slows Mayes' hunt The Associated Press LA CROSSE, Wis.

A sore Achilles tendon is costing two-time Pro Bowl pick Rue-ben Mayes some ground in his fight to open the season as the starting running back ahead of Dalton Hilliard. In the first minutes of his first day of practice, Mayes ex- perienced a tearing pain in his right Achilles tendon and has been unable to work with the team. Hilliard and Mayes each started nine of last year's 16 games, both opening in the same backfield at times, particularly after Craig Heyward got a sore knee at midseason. Saints coach Jim Mora said both will play this season, but the Achilles tendon injury is a setback to Mayes' desire to be a starter. "If he's going to come in here, which he did, with the idea of winning the job from Dalton, I think it hurts him, no question about Mora said.
