That's pretty hard on me because I'm so Used to playing every day. "In college I could overpower everybody. Now, since I'm start ing, I have to use some other pitches. I can't go out and try to blow everybody away for one or two innings.

I had the attitude of 'here it is, see if you can hit Now I've got to be more of a pitcher." Young found that out last week, when he gave up three runs and took the loss in what turned out to be an 11-1 Jamestown defeat. In his last two seasons at State, Young lost only three games despite making 51 appearances. His pitching numbers are impressive, both at MSU and with Jamestown. And given the circumstances, Young can't help but take a peek at those numbers from time to time. "A lot of times you look at the stats to see if a run was earned or unearned, but I try not to think about it too much," he said.

"My future is involved, but you don't ever want to get away from the team concept. "Like you hear people say, it's a business now. I still try to approach baseball as fun, but I'm also trying to make a living out of it. In this game, you have to improve and do it quick." How quick is the question. Last Sunday, Young pitched two innings in an exhibition game against a group of Quebec All-Stars in Montreal's Olympic Stadium.

The Expos played the Reds earlier in the day. "It was really special," he said. "I talked to guys like Tim Raines and Spike Owen. We talked about when they were in the minor leagues." Young, too, would like to make the climb up the minors to the majors. But there are only two things Young says he knows for certain about his future.

One, he will report to instructional ball in West Palm Beach, on Sept. 14. Two, he is getting married on Oct. 7 to Sharla Foshee of Jackson. 70 95 83 93 Pete Young the reliever is now Pete Young the starting pitcher, at least for the time being.

Yes, the verdict is in, sort of. The Montreal Expos sent word to Young on July 17 that for the rest of this season, he would start. The Expos' options seem endless. Young was Mississippi State's top reliever for three years. As a senior last spring, he appeared in 25 games, earning eight saves, a 1.22 earned run average and All-America honors.

When Young wasn't relieving, he played third base well enough to make All-SEC at that position in 1988. And there was also talk about Young moving to catcher, a position he played at times in high school. Despite all the rumors and position possibilities, Young sees himself as a reliever today, tomorrow and forever. "Probably next year, I'll be back in the bullpen," Young said. "I only threw about 40 or 50 innings all year at State, so (the Expos) wanted me to get at least 60 innings this summer before I go to instructional ball." The Chicago White Sox used the same strategy with former Mississippi State reliever Bobby Thigpen.

He was a starter in minor league ball at Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Hawaii so he could get plenty of innings pitched. The extra innings paid off, because Thigpen the reliever set a White Sox record for saves in a season last year with 34, and he already has 21 this year. Young, who hasn't had an at-bat this season, hopes the same pattern works for him. He has had four starts since the middle of July, winning three and losing one for the Class A Jamestown (N.Y.) Expos. He has a 2.05 ERA, 23 strikeouts and six walks in 30 innings pitched.

He had four saves before moving out of the bullpen. "Starting is real different," Young said.
