Halfbacks Patti Aliberti, Laura DiBenedetto and Sid Hurff kept the tempo with their usual slick passing and keen thinking hockey.

AH the Bulldogs did everything which was expected of them, including the unsung left side of the line wing Kr Groff and inners Sharen Sergi and Patty Kerr. Everything they usually do, except get excited. The team, which usually saves celebration for private moments, ecploded after the game with a joyous reaction to match, their coach's. They controlled their joy after key tourament wins against Pitman and Woodstown, but forsook any sort of reserve after this win. "We wanted this one very -badly," explained Lynch, who boro attacks, it looked as if West Morris-Mendham 17-3-1 might not get the ball the rest of the afternoon.

But. Mendhamdid manage 30 seconds in the first half, which included a roller by cneter forward Pat Miskel with five minutes left in the first half. After that flurry, Glassboro took over for good. "That's the way it has been for us all year," said coach Bower. "All season, we'd score first, spend most of the time with the ball, then the other team would go down for a quick goal.

We'd get the ball back for the rest of the game. That's why we never had many shutouts With 11 minutes gone in the second half, right inner Jann Bower cross-cut in front of Mendham goalie Carol Courtet for a score. Lynch followed it up By MARY ELLEN DRISCOLL Courier-Post Staff WEST WINDSOR No one was going to argue with Glassboro High field coach Jean Bower Saturday after the Bulldogs (14-1-2) captured the NJIAA state Group 1 title Saturday. "Aren't they wonderful, aren't they great?" she burbled after the Bulldogs demolished West Morris-Mendham, 4.1, at Mercer County Park. "Ialways brag about them to everyone and sometimes they wonder what I am so proud about.

Well, they showed it today." They certainly did, as Glassboro took control of the game early in the first half and never let go. "We came in as freshmen with the state title. We had gotten this far this year and we really wanted to go out with it. "I didn't worry about the game at all until we got here," the talented senior center forward continued. "Once we got her. though, there was such a wait, and it was almost longer (the playing field was ravaged by rain the night before, and repaired in time for the game).

Then. I began thinking and worrying and thinking more and more about the game." There was no need for anyone to worry about the Bulldogs, especially coach Bower, who retired officially after the game, a fact which she didn't' tell her team beforehand. "We started the. season with a nice win againt Pitman." she said, "and I was hoping we would finish the same way, which we did. But.

Take the case of Johnson, who has emerged as one of the most explosive players today, a miniature game-breaker who was passed upby every club in the annual draft two years ago. They didn't just pass him up once.

They ignor ed him for the lest part of 15 rounds of the draft. Eagle coach Mike McCormack explained the reason. "At that time, everybody and his uncle was allowed to break from the line of scrimmage to go downfield and cover on punts," said McCormack. "Fast, little men had little chance of taking that kind of punishment without injuries eventually putting them out of the game," he added. This is mainly why the Eagles and every other club didn't bother with the Hummingbird of football.

Houston drafted him. Not long after, the rule governing the number of players allowed to leave the line of scrimmage on punts was drastically altered and the Oilers were sitting pretty. Bartkowski was coming back. "I knew things just had to start going my way. I don't live that bad," he said after returning from four weeks of inaction due to a dislocated shoulder, shrugging off three early intercept ions and throwing two touchdowns to Alfred Jenkins.

Minnesota's Fran Tarkenton completed 24 of 32 passes against San Diego to run his career total to 2,841, surpassing Johnny Unitas' record of 2,830. Buffalo, also a game back of Miani. rode O.J. Simpson's four touchdowns past New England. Simpson, the NFL's leading rusher, was held to just 69 yards but scored on runs of one and two yards and on a pair of three-yard passes from Joe Ferguson.

Terry Metcalf's two touchdown runs, one on a 52-yard draw play, and Jim Hart's two scoring passes to Mel Gray, one of them a 74-yard bomb, blew out the Jets and kept St. Louis atop the NFC East, a game ahead of Dallas. Two early touchdown runs by Lawrence McCutcheon and Jim Bertelsen and two more by John Cappelletti enabled the Rams to breeze past Chicago. John Hadl passed for 275 yards and two touchdowns and rookie Will Harrell caught one scoring pass and threw another to lead Green Bay's rout of the Giants. Jan Stenerud's 26-yard field goal at 6:44 of sudden-death overtime carried Kansas City past the Lions.

Atlanta's Steve test Oilers from Page 45 Not only has the new ruling given Johnson some hope of longevity, it also has helped him unleash his uncanny style of punt returns for 431 yards (3 TDs) and returned kickoffs for 514 yards and another touchdown. Then, there's the matter of the Oilers' much-improved defense, which features the three-man front.

"A lot of teams would like to go to that defense," said Eagle defensive coach WaltMichaels. "But you have to have the right people to do it." In two words Curley Culp. The acquisition of such an extremely-agile defensive line such as Curley enabled the Oilers to make the new defense effective. It has given Houston an edge against teams still searching for a way to beat the latest fad in defease. Houston has people like quarterback Dan Pastorini to match up against Terry Rrad-shawand Don Hardeman to put against Franco Harris.

But wounded bodies are a different matter and with time running out, those could be litterally killing blows to a few National Football League teams. Cincinnati, smack in the middle of the league's tightest divisional race, suffered a shocking loss Sundat at the hands of the previously winless Cleveland Browns 35-23. And worse.

Bengals quarter back Ken Anderson, who had been slicing up Cleveland's secondary the way he's cut up just about every other pass defense, was knocked out of action with a bruised chest. The extent of the injury was still in question today. In Miami, the Dolphins wished there was a question about the seriousness of quarterback Bob Friese's injury but there isn't. He's out for the rest of the season and scheduled to undergo surgery today to repair a torn tendon in his right big toe. That tear also helped Balri-more tear up the Dolphins.

With Griese out and Earl Morrall ineffective, the Colts rallied for a 33-17 victory. But it was a costly one for Baltimore, too, when quarterback Bert Jones suffered bruised ribs. Like Anderson, Jones' status was uncertain. In the rest of Sunday's action, Atlanta beat Denver 35-31, Minnesota defeated San Diego 28-13, Buffalo belted New England 45-31, St. Louis ripped the New York Jets 37-6.

Oakland nosed out Washington 26-23 in overtime, Dallas defeated Phi ladelphia 27-17, Los Angeles routed Chicago 38-10, Green Bay crushed the New York Giants 40-14, Kansas City beat Detroit 24-21 in overtime and San Francisco slipped past New Orleans 16.6. Cincinnati could have taken at least a temporary lead in the division but the Browns in general and quarterback Mike Phipps in particular decided it was time to do something about their dreadful record. Anderson completed 13 of 20 for 292 yards and two touchdowns before giving way to John Reaves, who had little success. He hit on just four of 1 1 for 68 yards and throwing an interception that was returned by safety Jim Hill 56 yards for Cleveland's last score.
