Killed in "When Christopher fought he really fought even though he felt the war in plain words was useless." This was how Joseph H. Cowen Sr. of 177 Elm Woodlynne, described his son's feelings about being a machine gunner in Vietnam, yesterday the day the Cowen family received a telegram informing them of Army Sgt. Christopher Cowen's death. The message told the Cowen's their son died of wounds received in a fire fight near the Mekong Delta on July 15 a after his 21st birthday.

1st From Woodlynne Sgt. Cowen was the first soldier from Woodlynne to d'e in Vietnam and the flags in the little borough will remain at half mast until the body is returned to the United States. "We got his last letter just after July Fourth and Christopher told us 'things looked very bad that in filtration by the Vietcong was said Mr. Cowen. "Christopher felt the Viet namese could guide themselves," his.

father continued, "and he had felt the war was useless from the time he entered the service the day after Thanksgiving in .1966." Collingswood Grad Sgt. Cowen had been in Viet nam since last January and his tour of duty there was scheduled to end sometime in November. A 1966 graduate of Col- John J. Keating, 51, owner of Heating's Tavern, 2006 River Camden, died yesterday in Burdett Tomlin Hospital, Cape May Court House. Keating was a Camden city fireman until 1952 when he began operating the Tavern in Camden.

He was a member of the Holy Name Society, the Wildwood Country Club and the Men of Malvern. He is a World War II veteran of the Coast Guard and was a guard on the United States All Service Football team in 1943. He is survived by two brothers, Henry J. of Camden and Fred J. of Oaklyn, and one sister, Mrs.

HUD Approves Mt. Holly Project WASHINGTON -The Department of Housing and Urban Development has approved final plans for Mount Holly Township's 22-acre east downtown renewal project. It has reserved grant of $670,000 for the undertaking, which will include commercial and residential rehabilitation of 89 buildings, clearance of substandard structures, development of parking facilities and elimination of traffic problems. Temptations Cancel Music Fair Show A spokesman for the Camden County Music Fair announced today that the Temptations singing group canceled their scheduled appearance next week. Before moving to Southern California a year and a half ago, Guerra, 39, was a disc jockey at radio station KYA in San Francisco. A native of Oaklyn, N.

he began his radio career in Atlantic City, N.J., using the name Bobby Mitche 1, then moved on to Philadelphia where he worked for two stations, WPEN and WIBG. Guerra, who had been in and out of the hospital for the past two months, is survived by his wife and five children. Boy Scout Camp Rated Excellent The Pine Hill Boy Scout reservation has received a "99-A" rating on its facilities by the national Scouting organization a rating considered excellent. In making the announcement, Thomas J. Auchter, president of the Camden County Council of Boy Scouts, said national officers evaluated the camp on 100 points which included health and sanitation, safety factors, program features, leadership and financial operation.
