4C December 4, 1984 TUESDAY THE CLARION-LEDGER PRO FOOTBALL! Bum is mum on who'll start at OB for Saints Chargers score late to defeat Bears 20-7 jr Duckworth fumbled away a certain touchdown in the third quarter, but atoned when he slipped past defender Shaun Gayle, sprinted down the left sideline and hauled in Luther's scoring strike with 9:37 to play. That came after Jackson State graduate Walter Payton, a native of Columbia, had gone 10 yards for a third-quarter touchdown that gave the Bears a 7-6 lead. Payton's run capped a 34-yard scoring drive that began when San Diego's Earnest Jackson fumbled. Payton finished the game with 92 yards on 24 carries. On the possession after Payton's TD, Luther, subbing for injured Dan Fouts, hit Duckworth on a slant pattern from San Diego's 46-yard line, and the third-year pro took off for the goal line and an apparent go-ahead score.

Near the end zone, though, Duckworth inexplicably lost control of the ball and fumbled it at the 2. Chicago's Mike Richardson recovered at the 4. yard pass on the Bengals' first play from scrimmage in the 20-17 Cincinnati victory. As Collinsworth lay on the ground following the tackle by the Browns' Frank Minefield, it appeared that defenders Hanford Dixon, a Southern Mississippi product, and Al Gross were taunting him. "I've told the players this: The guy across the line of scrimmage is you.

He just happens to wear a different uniform," Schotten-heimer said. "There's no place for that in our game." The Browns' coach was visibly upset about the incident, but he declined to say if anyone was fined. Frank Kush, finishing his option year with the NFL Indianapolis Colts, acknowledged the possibility he could be fired at the end of the season but denied a newspaper report that he already has agreed to coach in the United States Football League. The Arizona Republic reported there is a "very strong chance" that Kush, a former coach at Arizona State University, would become head coach of the merged Arizona Wranglers-Oklahoma Outlaws of the USFL. According to an unidentified source "close to the situation," the newspaper said, Kush and the Wranglers are awaiting the end of the NFL season in two weeks to make the Compiled from AP reports New Orleans Saints coach Bum Phillips refused to say Monday whether the three-touchdown performance of reserve quarterback Dave Wilson earned him the starting assignment against Cincinnati on Sunday.

He said Wilson, a third-year pro, played well and deserved the chance to get into a game that had not already been decided. Still, he wouldn't say whether Wilson or Richard Todd would start against Cincinnati. And he got testy when pressed. "I'm going to make the decision. I've already answered that question once or twice or three times," he said.

Wilson entered Sunday's game at Los Angeles with the Saints trailing 24-0 and narrowed the gap to 27-21 before the Rams pulled away to win 34-21. He was 14-for-29 with two interceptitons for 139 yards and three touchdowns. Todd was intercepted twice and sacked four times, giving way to Wilson in the second quarter after going 1-5-2 for 22 yards. Cleveland Browns coach Marty Schot-tenheimer indicated he was furious with the conduct of some of his defensive backs after Cincinnati receiver Cris Collinsworth was hurt in Sunday's game. Collinsworth was dazed after catching a 7- Statistics, Page 2 The Associated Press SAN DIEGO Bobby Duckworth, whose third-quarter miscue looked as if it might cost San Diego a victory, sprinted 88 yards with a pass from Ed Luther for a fourth-quarter touchdown that lifted the Chargers towards a 20-7 National Football League triumph over the Chicago Bears Monday night.

Duckworth's reception gave the Chargers a 13-7 lead and Lee Williams' 66-yard return of a pass interception with 1:15 to play added insurance. The Bears, who captured their first NFC Central Division title last week, were forced to punt 1 1 times and never mounted a scoring threat under the guidance of third-string quarterback Rusty Lisch, who was called upon when Steve Fuller, himself standing in for injured starter Jim McMahon, went down with a separated shoulder in the first quarter. Chicago fell to 9-5 and hurt its chances for home field advantage in the NFC playoffs. The Bears have not had a playoff game at home since 1963. Duckworth, who was involved in both of the game's most exciting plays, caught three passes for 185 yards as the Chargers won without the arm of first-string quarterback Dan Fouts, who was out with a groin injury.

I ijv fii I The game was a defensive struggle from the outset, and the Bears, without Fuller and McMahon, got the worst of it. Chicago punted on each of its first six possessions, and a fumble on its seventh set up Rolf Benirschke's second field goal of the first half, staking the Chargers to a 6-0 advantage at intermission. 3 Press Walter Payton looks for room to run. Summary, Page 2 By LEE BAKER Clarion-Ledger Sports Writer RAYMOND Hinds Junior College's Eagles survived their 10-man tag match with Copiah-Lincoln JC, nudging the Wolves from Wesson 103-95 here Monday to raise their record to 9-0. But the Wolves, now 7-2, made the winning a challenge start to finish with the turning point coming with 4:05 left when Co-Lin's Vincent Harris fouled out. At that point, Co-Lin trailed 89-82. But coach Mike Jones took so long getting in a sub for Harris that he was assessed a technical foul. Hinds' Robert Bendolph missed on his one-and-one, but hit twice on the technical.

The Eagles, after taking the ball out, eventually picked up another free throw to move on top by 10. They were never threatened thereafter. It was a free-swinging affair, the Wolves winding up with 29 personal fouls plus a couple of technicals and the Eagles with 27 personals. As a consequence, despite good field goal shooting both ways, Hinds making 37 field goals and Co-Lin 35, the decision came from the line. There the far-busier Eagles were dominant, although hardly deadly, sinking only 29 of 47 free throws to the more-accurate-but-less-active Wolves' 25 of 32.

For Hinds, Bendolph had 28 points, Lawson Veal 23, Al Ray Lewis 18, Alvin Morris 15 and Derrick Edwards 13, while for Co-Lin, Keith Tobias had 22, Dontray Williams and Bruce Franklin 19 apiece and Ken Vincent 17. The Hinds women were less successful, dropping their eighth of nine games, 79-57 to the 1 1-0 Lady Wolves. Victoria McDonald had 20, Sandra Johnson 15 and Jackie Norl 13 for the winners Burkley sparks Delta State win Summaries, Page 2 Compiled from special reports Delta State's James Burkley tossed in 22 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Statesmen to a 67-58 victory over the Southern Arkansas Muleriders at Magnolia, Ark. DSU coach Ed Murphy gave credit to his defense. "That's all if was to it," he said.

"And we hit the free throws but defense was the key and the outstanding play out of James Burkley. He had more to do with us winning than anybody." DSU is now 3-2 and the Muleriders 4-2. Carl Brown added 20 points for the Statesmen who meet Alcorn State in the Greenwood Civic Center Thursday night.
