Broadway A 6-3304 Screams, Squeals Echo In Capital JL WASHINGTON iJPI -The last time the British came to Washington in such force Dolly Madison had to roll up the Constitution and smuggle itout of town. The Constitution--arid the White House and the Capitol secure today biit there was some doubt about the rest of the city after Britain's mop-top Beatles made their-debut here. The four, who may be the greatest British dollar-earners siricer the Haigs twins began bottling highland dew, swept all before "them -last night-yeah, yeah, Fans '-they shrieked; they they stomped, they laughed, they howled, but they squealed Beatles last only; at the jam- packed Washington Coliseum IS COMING TO TUCSON STAR-CITIZEN SOX JUS ELECTROHOME TELEVISION ft STEREO Value Price Performance 400 4th Ave. but in the hallowed confines of her Britannic majesty's embassy. After the performance, the Beatles, who go back to New York later today leaving the capital to visiting British Prime Minister Sir Alec Douglas-Home, went off to the embassy to conquer the lifted- pinkie set. were mobbed by the crowd at Ambassador Sir David Ormsby-Gore's masked ball. Most of the costumed ball-goers were put in the shade by the Beatles, who wore their working outfits of tight black suits with velvet lapels and winkle-pickers-high-heeled pointed patent leather boots.

The Beatles didn't look much like diplomats under the lights at the Coliseum, but they obviously suited the audience to a shriek. And shriek they did. Also whine, whinny, squeak, gurgle, cry, laugh, sob etc. A squad of impassive policemen watched the goings- on, but that's all they had to do--the crowd was noisy but peaceable, even when subjected to a long wait before the concert began. The teen-agers began lining up in a six-inch snow almost two hours before the performance began.

Then, the shaggy heroes made their entrance down an aisle lined with red-coated attendants. With squeals and shrieks the audience surged toward them, but the thin red line held firm. The Beatles made it untouched to the stage in the center of the auditorium.
