iu weeks from this time by the opening of the new route to the Eastern States via the Southern Pacific and the Atchison Topeka Santa a Railroads Passen gers and freight it is announced will be transported over these roads com mencing on the first of January next The San rancisco Call says: The opening of this route will add hereafter greatly to the business of San rancisco for it will place valuable mines in easy communication with points from which supplies may be drawn and this city is sure to furnish machinery as well as many descriptions of provisions etc It is stated that fifty palace cars are in course of construction for the iww overland route of the South ern Pacific Railroad Company when the connection is made with the Atchison Topeka Santa Railroad to accom modate Ten years ago to day the first numberf the Nevada Stats Journal was is a weekly published and edited by A Littlefield ellows and Laws On Saturday June 15 1872 Messrs ellows and became the proprietors of the Nevada State Journal and it was continued as a weekly by them until ebruary 19 1873 when it was issued a semi weekly till April 1 1874 when it was issued as a daily and weekly thereafter On Sep tember 5 1874 Downing became the sole owner publisher and proprietor of the Nevada State Journal and it has been continued by him as editor and proprietor to the present time Ten years is a long time in the history of any paper That the Journal has been able to exist for such a period is due to the liberal support it has always re ceived from the people for in all these years it has never received a single cent from any candidate for public office nor has it ever been paid anything for ever advocating or opposing any measure in its editorial columns The Journal has endeavored to be fair and impartial it has had no purpose save to do exactly right It has never gone out of its way to injure a personal or political enemy and all times has been careful not to un justly attack the character of any private citizen It has been emphatically a paper and has never declined to publish communications on any sub ject from any source so long as they were not abusive or libelous In the future as in the past the Journal will strive to help tho State the county Washoe and particularly the town Reno Eureka Sentinel The Union Pacific Railroad has re cently made mi inwortant reduction in its freight and passenger tariffs The reduction we think is to be attributed to the fact that the Atchison Topeka and Santa road is nearing completion and a connection with the Southern Pacific It is stated that the Southern road is destined to command the largest share of the freight carrying business of the coast Eastern cities are also bid ling actively for the Arizona trade and drummers from the East are invading that Territory by the hundreds This all comes of railroad competition But Nevada and California are not in position geographically to derive much benefit from the completion of this new transcontinental line Unfortunately for us the westerly ends of both of the overland roads are controlled by one and the same company It will make no difference to this company which of the roads gets the big end of the busi ness What Nevada requires is cross roads between these through lines We can then patronize the line that treats us the best by giving us the cheapest rates Our State would also be immeasurably benefitted by the opening up of hun dreds of mining districts now dormant for the want of capital and proper facil ities for their successful development The constructiou'of the proposed road from Eureka to the terminus of the Utah Southern would afford this section of Nevada immediate relief The mo ment of its completion would afford us the benefits arising from the competing rates of rhe Union Pacific In view of this state of facts we sub mit to the business world hereabouts whether it woutd not be well to bring to the attention of the legislative delega Lost A
