3C The Clarion-Ledger Jackson Daily News Update Monday Morning Quarterbacks Monday, September 3, 1984 Lusia H. Stewart MSU JSU Basketball will be out of Lusia Harris Stewart's life again in the winter ahead, just as it was for three seasons after she finished up a brilliant playing career at Delta State in 1977. The first superstar of women's basketball, Lucy Harris was the driving force behind Delta State's three straight national collegiate championships back in 1975-77. But after graduation in 1977, she moved into a far different role as an admissions counselor in the Admissions Office at Delta State University, one she filled ably and well for the next three years, but with thoughts of basketball never far away. So it was then that in 1980, Lucy Stewart made a comeback of sorts in her game as an assistant coach to Frances Gar-mon with the DSU Lady Statesmen, continuing, meanwhile, as an admissions counselor.

But a year ago Garmon left Jackson State's 23-7 season-opening Southwestern Athletic Conference victory over Alabama State Saturday night in Montgomery, was a real paradox. Most of the night, Alabama State was never in the game. But neither were the Hornets out of it. Jackson State, playing back to the form it showed in the late '70s when it ran exclusively from the Wishbone, controlled the contest with its running game to the tune of 342 yards. Freshman Lewis Tillman accounted for 135 of those on 18 carries.

Still, the Tigers were perpetually one play away from disaster. And the way Alabama State was throwing the ball around Cramton Bowl, disaster could have struck at any moment The reason for that was an ungodly number of penalties that repeatedly killed whatever momementum Jackson State managed to build. The Tigers, the most penalized team in NCAA Division I-AA a year ago, got a good start toward retaining that dubious distinction by being flagged 16 times for 145 yards. That in itself was enough to leave coach W.C. Gorden in something of a sour mood.

"We made too many mistakes," said Gorden. "I hate to coach a team that makes a lot of mistakes." Gorden's sentiments are understandable. Any team that is prone to mistakes is likely to end up a loser. However, it must be pointed out that Jackson State was credited with some penalties it didn't deserve namely a couple of questionable pass interference calls. That too didn't sit well with Gorden.

"I don't want to bad talk the officiating," he said. "But I was displeased with the penalties. I go into each year thinking fewer penalties will be called and they get higher and higher. It's just like Jacob's ladder." One can only wonder how awesome J-State might have been without all the penalties and mistakes. If the penalties and mistakes continue, the '84 season is going to be an agonizing one for Tiger backers.

ROSCOE NANCE The large Mississippi State contingent had plenty to cheer about Saturday night at the Superdome. But no one knows better than State's players that the 30-3 season-opening victory over Tulane should be forgotten as soon as possible. After dominating Tulane in all areas, the Bulldogs should be favored Saturday when they play host to Colorado State, which will be making its season debut. But Colorado State, 5-7 last year, returns 19 starters, and should be a much tougher opponent than Tulane. Getting a true read on State's young team was diffi-: cult, because it's hard to judge just how good Tulane is.

The Green Wave also has many young, inexperienced players, many of whom made the kind of mistakes coach Wally English hoped they wouldn't. Still, it's hard to ignore the fact that many of those offensive mistakes were forced by State's defense. And it's even harder to overlook the job the Bulldog offense did. Check out these statistics: 28 first downs (last year's single-game high was 26); 85 offensive plays (last year's high was 82); and 509 total yards (last year's high was 479). Not bad for a team with two returning starters on the interior line and none in the backf ield.

Tailback Jim Cumberbatch, a freshman redshirt from Hollywood, Fla rushed for a quiet 89 yards on 1 5 carries. But it was sophomore quarterback Don Smith, who doesn't know what it's like to lose as a starting quarterback, who made the offense go. Smith rushed for 81 yards on 13 carries and scored twice on option keepers. He also completed 10-of-21 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown. Counting a 46-0 record at Hamilton High School, Smith is 47-0 as a starting QB.

His collegiate starting debut certainly wasn't enough to make Bulldog fans forget about John Bond, but it was a heck of a beginning. RUSTY HAMPTON had been even harder, she acknowledges, leading her to stay with the double duty, plus the host of other responsibilities entailed in being a wife and mother as well. "I really had missed basketball during my three years away from it and I was glad to get back," Stewart says. "And I have the feeling now that I will get back to it again sometime. "After all, that's what I feel I really do best and I would prefer coaching to the work as an admissions counselor, even though I enjoy that job, too." Actually, Stewart adds, she found the admissions job easier to work into those other roles as wife to George Stewart and mother to son Eddie, going on 5 years old Dec.

25, than basketball, even though admissions has kept her on the road a great deal. "It's hard to say how much I've traveled in the admissions job," she says. "Probably 8,000 to 12,000 miles a year. "Mostly I go to high schools in the Delta area, recruiting students. It's a year-around job, but the busiest time usually runs from the last of September until the early part of May.

Sometimes I get down to the Jackson area and up around Memphis, but mostly it's fairly close to Cleveland, so I'm able to get home every night. "With basketball, though, during the season I've had to be away a good bit, sometimes for several days when the team makes a trip." The admissions job largely entails speaking to groups of high school seniors, seeking to stir their interest in attending Delta State. In addition, the work load in the office involves evaluating transcripts of transfers from junior and senior colleges, who have applied for admission to the school. "It worked somewhat in line with my responsibilities coaching, which were largely recruiting, too," Stewart smiles as she adds, "but it's different, trying to get basketball players and trying to get students." LEE BAKER the Delta flatlands for a new head coaching job at Texas Christian and Lloyd Clark came in as her successor from Warren Central High School at Vicksburg with Lucy continuing as assistant. Now, after considerable thought, extending back to last December, Stewart has stepped out as basketball assistant and a new aide to Clark, Robert Tanner, has been named for the Delta State women's basketball program.

And Lusia Harris Stewart has returned fulltime to the Admissions Office. "It was difficult, trying to deal with two jobs," Stewart admits, "but I always have enjoyed basketball so much that even though it was hard doing both, I liked doing them."
