THE CLARION-LEDGER FRIDAY March 23, 1984 5D Baseball ftenf roe went extra mile to be king of Rebel hill Jackson Mets lose 9-6; I McLain posts cash bond ri li -v. By BUTCH JOHN File photo Exhibition linescores. Page 4 Compiled from AP report! Memphis defeated Jackson 9-6 Thursday in a minor league exhibition baseball game at Sarasota, Fla. Memphis, the Kansas City Royals' Southern League affiliate, took advantage of a Met organizational rule prohibiting breaking balls for its pitchers to hammer out 15 hits. Met starter Calvin Schiraldi was impressive, nevertheless.

He yielded one run in three innings, striking out six and walking none. Mark Lockenmeyer also escaped the Memphis barrage yielding but one run in two innings. Center fielder Lenny Dykstra, making his first appearance in a Jackson uniform, led off the game with a walk, stole second base and came in to score on Jim Woodward's double. Dykstra drew three more walks in the game. Greg Olson had two doubles and Billy Beane two singles in the Mets' nine-hit attack.

First baseman Randy Milligan belted a two-run homer in the sixth inning. The Mets, defending Texas League Eastern Division champions, have a 1-1 exhibition record. Denny McLain, major league baseball's last 30-game winner, accused of racketeering, loan-sharking, bookmaking, extortion and drugs charges, posted bond Thursday in Tampa, and predicted he will be "vindicated" of the allegations. The former Detroit Tigers star left the federal courthouse after posting five percent of a $200,000 bond ordered by U.S. Magistrate Paul Game.

Arraignment was set for March 29. McLain and six others were named in a five-count indictment unsealed Monday, 10 days before the ex-pitcher's 40th birthday. Atlanta Braves pitcher Pascual Perez, arrested two months ago with a half-gram of cocaine in his wallet, will learn his fate today. He could get as much as five years. in prison for drug trafficking.

His trial is set for 9 a.m. CST in criminal court in his hometown of Santiago. Judge Fanny Cervantes de Bales is expected to hand down a verdict Friday. Perez has been jailed without bail at Fort San Luis prison in Santiago since Jan. 9, when he was arrested outside a bar with the.

cocaine. The quantity classified him as a trafficker under Dominican law. As the trial opens, what amounts to a national campaign for clemency continues to gather force. Prominent Dominicans, from former President Joaquin Balaguer to Cincinnati pitcher Mario Soto, have made public appeals to give Perez another chance. Rebs' 11th game in 1981, an 8-3 victory over Alabama-Birmingham in which he went the full nine.

Used basically in long relief that season and his sophomore year, he finished with 6-4 and 6-1 records, respectively, Renfroe became a full-time starter a month into the 1983 campaign, after a 10-inning 4-2 loss to Memphis State. In the offseason, with the blessing of Gibbs, Renfroe developed a distinctive sidearm delivery, making an already extensive assortment of off-speed stuff even more effective in a conference that lives off mistakes of fastball pitchers. "He's not an overpowering type of pitcher. He comes from down here, over there," said Gibbs. "His ball dips and sinks.

He's got good control, and his breaking pitch is really tough on right-handed hitters. "But he's not a guy who minds challenging the hitters. He's not going to pitch fine; he's going to make you hit the ball. He's got guts about him. He takes those guts and uses his head with them." Renfroe's ERA dipped to 3.50 in his 8-4 junior year, a run and a half from the first two years, after he altered his overhand delivery to around 80 percent sidearm and three-quarters.

He's been more effective this season. His only bad outing was a no-decision in a 6-5 eight-inning loss to Auburn. Suffering with the flu, he allowed three hits, three walks and four earned runs in four innings, hitting two batters for good measure. After returning to health on the road trip, he went five innings, allowing a run in Ole Miss' 8-5 Clarion-Ledger Sports Writer Laddie Renfroe traveled a long way to claim an uncertain baseball future as a walk-on pitcher for the Ole Miss Rebels. In the four years since, he's given and received a return on every mile.

Not only does Renfroe, a 1983 All-Southeastern Conference West performer, hold the Rebels' record for career appearances (59). With any luck at all, the senior right-hander will also finish his career as the school's all-time victory leader. With a 2-0 start in 1984, including the team's best ERA among starters (2.74), the side-wheeling Renfroe has 22 career wins, three short of the record 25 Jeff Calhoun set in 1977-80. Pretty impressive for a guy who came all the way from Nashua, N.H. he is a Natchez native who lived in Mississippi before moving east with his family at an early age with not even as much as a promise of a uniform waiting on his arrival.

Renfroe, expected to start in today's 2 p.m. game with Clemson, gave former Rebel pitcher Cecil Burford who threw a no-hitter for Ole Miss in 1956 credit for his attending Ole Miss. "Our family knows him well from living in Greenwood. I wanted to come down south to play baseball, so he asked Coach (Jake) Gibbs if I could come out," Renfroe said. "I did, and I started throwing strikes.

I ended up starting the first game of the season my freshman year." He lost 8-6 to Livingston in the start, which doesn't spoil the story. His initial win came in the Ole Miss' Laddie Renroe win at West Florida. It was Renfroe's second win, the first coming on six scoreless innings in the 2-0 season-opening win against Mississippi State. Renfroe said he received some feelers from the Chicago Cubs after the State game, which doesn't surprise Gibbs. The former New York Yankee catcher says he sees pro potential in Renfroe, most likely as a reliever.

Renfroe is looking forward to a chance at the pros, he said. But first, he'd like to notch a few more wins at Ole Miss not solely for the school record, but also the school's record, which stands 6-7 overall and 2-6 so far in the SEC West. Yes, the victory record is on his mind. "Sure, I'd like to break it. Especially," he said, "my being a walk-on and all."
