"I make it a policy not to discuss personnel matters," said Dark.

"But I'll tell you Sam McDowell is still the best lefthander in the game." McDowell reportedly used abrasive language on the bus in the presence of several women, 'including Dark's step-daughter. Dark said that beer had been served on the team flight from Kansas City to Los Angeles and that on further flights it would not be allowed. A Cleveland official said McDowell was guilty of "other indescreet acts" during the ride and that he swore at Dark loud enough for the manager to hear. But the $1,000 is not a team record. Former Indians Manager Birdie Tebbetts and Rocky Colavito are believed to have been fined close to $2,000 for separate violations while playing with the Tribe.

Two Michigan schools given MAC membership COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP)- In its first expansion since 1953, the Mid- American Conference Monday welcomed Eastern and Central Michigan universities to the fold. The two Michigan schools join the current six MAC members Bowling Green, Kent State, Miami, Ohio" University, Toledo, and Western Mich- Announcement of the expansion made by MAC Commissioner Fred Jacoby and Miami University President Phillip Snriver, chairman of the MAC Council of Presidents. Stunned by the news of the MAC selections was University of Cincinnati Athletic Director George Smith. "I am really shocked," be said when he heard his school had not been selected.

Cuicinnati and the University of Louisville were among eight schools being considered for membership. "There are only two ways to go now," said Smith. "One, we wUl continue to seek another conference affi- liation or, two, we'll talk to other schools about formation of a new conference." Cincinnati has campaigned as an independent since last September when it withdrew from the Missouri Valley Conference. "We'd Ufce to relate with a conference," said Smith. He said costs of running an intercollegiate program at UC have pushed beyond a year with no relief in sight.

He explained the only alternative was conference affiliation. Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan are also currently independent schools, both having at one time belonged to the now-defunct Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. They will become eligible for MAC competition in all sports but football and basketball starting with the 1972-73 athletic year. Conference and school officials are already at work on scheduling. CMU and EMU can compete in MAC football and basektball when advanced schedules permit.

Central Michigan, at Mount Pleasant, has an enrollment of about 15,000 Eastern Michigan at Ypsilanti enrolls 20,000. Jacoby said Marshall's status would be reviewed in the near future if the university formally requests it. "Noting the substantial improvements which have been made in toe Marshall athletic program," Japoby said, "the Council of Presidents has granted that institution permission to apply for reinstatement at an early dale." Council meets next in Febru-.
