Ml net Sight By WAYNE THOMPSON Clarion-Ledger Sports Editor Bruiser Kinard Given Top Honor is All-Time Gridders Selected . Helping football to celebrate its first centennial, Various groups are getting together and picking this and that all-star team commemorating this initial century of play. Which is all well and good. jSach individual is entitled to his own opinion and when Jtiore than two folks can agree of any one thing, there has to be some basis for fact along the line somewhere. So, it was surprising to see a special committee of the Football Writers of America do such a remarkable job in selecting a modern all-time team presumably players in the last 50 years of this gigantic sport. After all, there are tremendous arguments annually over such things as the All-Southeastern Conference team this coming from just 10 teams and with some real "automatics" on the premises. On the just-completed SEC Sky -Writing deal, the 38 vscribes on the plane debated long and loud before finally naming their own all-league teams and few, indeed, were the unanimous choices. Right off, all Mississippians have to be more than delightedthough certainly not over-surprised that Frank (Bruiser) Kinard of Ole Miss was named to this particular team. An ex-Jackson Central High star who was Ole Miss' first recognized All-American, Bruiser truly has the credentials. An All-Pro with both the NFL Brooklyn Dodgers and with the New York Yankees in the All-American Conference in his final year 1946 Bruiser earned all-star honors by the dozen before his latest coup. Included are being a charter member of the Football Hall of Fame, on the 25-year All-America team, on the all-time A1I-SEC team, on Pop Warner's alltime team and numerous others. rhursday, Sept. 18, 1969-D fcfic Clatfon'-LcBgCt 5 Country Fair Talent On 'Team9 ' In addition to Bruiser, others selected on the team as announced by the Writers, were such performers as Red Grange, Sammy Baugh, Ernie JNevers and Jay Berwanger in the backfield. Kinard's running mate at tackle is another fair performer in Bronko Nagurski; "the ends are Don Hutson and Bennie Oosterbann: the guards are Jim Parker and Bob Suf fridge: and Mel Hein nailed down the center slot. "Grange, incidentally, was the lone unanimous pick: While Nagurski just missed being a unanimous choice by one vote. Of the group, only one man-Parker, an Ohio State guard who later starred with the Baltimore Colts played his college ball after 1940. Parker played from 1954-56. No doubt, some truly talented men failed to make the team and many hours will be spent in conversation by folks who violently disagree with the team, as a whole. But. one thing is certain. It would be difficult to try and pick a team without including many of the above-mentioned performers. Chicago All-Star Game Lives On ilt wasn't too many years ago, shortly after the American Football Coaches' Association moved its All-American game to Atlanta, that many people were predicting the end of the Chicago All-Star fracas matching the . pro champs against the graduating, hand-picked collegians. In fact, one individual in a position to know whereof he spoke, told me flatly that the Chicago game would be "dead" once the current TV contract expired. And, the source added, such things as the Football Writers meeting and other key sessions, would be switched from Chicago to Atlanta. It made sense, to me, and was passed on. wHow wrong can you be. The Chicago game, with the Super Bowl champs to participate, has been given new life while the Atlanta deal has now been abandoned. Bill Murray, ex-Duke coach and executive secretary of the AFCA, says there are no current plans to continue said contest. And, for the moment, jypu have to believe him. The philosopher who came forth with his statement about every cloud having a silver lining has a point on his side this year relative to the current major league pennant races. For one thing, those New York Yankee fans really have something about which to crow there ain't a chance that the Yanks will lose in this year's World Series. One of the top prep games of the year is upcoming at Newell Field tonight (Thursday) when the Murrah Mustangs and Yazoo City Indiansboth boasting undefeated marks clash in a 7:30 p.m. battle. It has to be one well-worth watching. Hind Sight says the announcement that Marines would be allowed to have those Afro-style haircuts made him really proud to have once been a Marine-just like the Pueblo story made him proud to be an American. iVIFUMMi the dramatic difference you can see in color tv! t air is : Urn GfW- 111 II featured in all new 1970 12" giant-screen k 7 OS en in nirtirr DIAG. n in ntrturp color tv console Th MONDRIAN A4519 Beautiful Modern styled console.
