COURIER-POST, Comd.n, N. Tuesday, Nov.mb.r 17, 1970 28 Kicker Begs for Chance Rod Blaik 60-Yard Field Goal Also Long in Drama Have Colleges Failed Athletes? 7 I believe that the coaches, athletic directors, faculty representatives and all of us who have been concerned directly with the administration of college football, do have a responsibility to the player for his academic welfare. I also believe we have not faced up to it. We have spent too much time debating the nuances of McClard once kicked a 56-yard field goal In high school (without any wind), and he kicked a 53-yarder earlier this year against Wichita State. "I don't think the long one will do all that much to increase my confidence," said McClard, who already has so much confidence it is easy to see how he couldn't get any more.

"Where I get my confidence is when I consistently hit those 35 and 40 yarders. "And I think maybe the coach will let me try some more of those long ones. After all, I've tried two from past the 50 and I made them both." Perfection is kind of hard to beat. NCAA field goal kicking record last week against SMU. He ought to get an Oscar for his efforts on the sidelines.

The scene is Razorback Stadium, and it is late in the first half, and the ball is on SMU's 43-yard line, and the wind Is blowing briskly at Arkansas' back and this is the way McClard tells it. "I definitely knew where the ball was, and I had to beg to get into the game. "I was standing right by the coach (Head Coach Frank Broyles). I said, "let's try a field goal, coach, "But he said, 'No, we're going to "I told him, "Come on, please, let me try it. I can make it." "But he still told me, "No, we had better punt it.

It is better that Then McClard got an ally. Offensive Coach Mervin Johnson told Broyles: "Aw, Frank, let him kick it." "Well," said Broyles, "OK." So McClard dashed In and set the record just like he knew he could all along. He even hit the ball on the laces, which ht figured robbed him of three or four yards of distance. New Orleans Tom Dempsey set the professional record of 63 yards the week before McClard's boot, and people have been kicking field goals from long distances with alarming regularity across the country this year. Why Is that? "Well, I think people are beginning to figure out the value of field goals," McClard said.

"That long one I kicked the other day was my third of the first half. That gave us a 15-0 lead. If we had just been going for touchdowns we would have had only a 6-0 lead. "And, then, too, I think people are working in practice more on field goals. My line Is great.

I have not had one blocked all year, and my center Terry Hopkins and my holder Gus Rusher have done wonder-ful jobs." Bill McClard's 60-yard field goal Saturday the longest ever by a collegian and the second longest ever by anyone, anywhere, anytime In competition was admittedly quite something. But the tableau enacted on the sidelines Just before that boot was worth an Instant replay all by Itself. It was downright dramatic. Hollywood might be calling right now. Unless the pro scouts have the lines tied up.

McClard, is the Arkansas Ra-zorback who has scored more points than any other place kicker in the country and who used a favoring wind to set the acceptable recruiting and aid. There still is much work to be done in these areas but the emphasis has not been where it should be on the academic side. In considering the academic welfare of the player, the entrance requirements should insist the boy have not only the latent ability, but also the desire to do acceptable work in a legitimate course. By a "legitimate course," I mean one that will be of assistance to him after graduation in some pursuit other than partici Indians Lambert CL 'A Spinning Wheel Stops At Texas in Ratings RED BLAIK Leaders NEW YORK (UPI) -College football's spinning wheel points toward Texas again. while Louisiana State, headed for a Southeast Conference shootout with Mississippi, walloped Mississippi State, 38-7.

5 slot, followed by pation in professional sports. I have no objection to the exceptionally gifted college athlete playing his sport professionally for a reasonable number of years, especially if it will help him pay for postgraduate work or provide the flnan-cia springboard for a solid business investment. My point is that if the college has prepared the boy to do nothing but play a sport professionally and some still are doing only that then the college has failed him and has indicted itself as an educational fraud. The responsibility of all concerned for the welfare of the player does not end with academic screening. They should see to It he Is integrated, into the student body.

This should be done in two ways. First, don't have him room in an athletic dormitory; mix him with the other students. Second, between sport seasons, get him interested in such extracurricular -ctivities as debating, glee club, student government, and the dramatic society. I appreciate the fact the growth of the game at many schools has made the athletic dormitory the most feasible investment economically, and that not every campus is blessed with a hall or dormitory setup. But I believe the athletic dormitory has made the athlete a displaced professional in the eyes of many undergraduates.
