Reba Ann Matusof signs the Ambassador for the deaf visits area By Mark Bryant Sbe was in Altoona Saturday to kick off a deaf awareness program that aims to educate the public about deafness. "I love it but it's a lot of work," she said of her role as emissary.

An outgoing and vivacious person, Miss Matusol earned the crown last August and will reign for two years. She said deaf people must take the lead in teaching the public about hearing impairment and that they must assert themselves to show their capabilities and break people's preconceptions about them. One frustration that Miss Matusof voiced is with the many people who wrongly associate deafness with a lack of intelligence. "They think we're inferior," she said, "and there are too many assumptions of what 1 we can't do." For example, she said that when she uses sign language in a restaurant, she will often be ignored by the server. But she said that she's quick to speak up and give her own order.

Though some deaf people get frustrated at the condescension of people, Miss Matusof recommends to them: "You shouldn't put your anger before your Miss Matusof said that she's seen much improvement in the public's perception of deaf people but admitted more eye-opening is needed. Though Miss Matusof uses sign language, she also speaks more clearly than most people with a "deaf" accent, mixed with the occasional Brooklyn twang that reflects her summers spent there. But she enjoys sign language because it's pressive and revealing of moods. When people talk to her, she said, sometimes they talk loudly or move their mouths a lot. "I don't need to see the cavities in their mouths," she said.

Miss Matusof suggested that when someone deals with a deaf person, "Look at their abilities first and then look at their disabilities. Let them have the potential of challenge; don't decide their Miss Matusof meets and relishes those challenges. In her first yearand-a-balf at university, sbe maintained a 3.8 average without the use of interpreters or notetakers. Through lip reading, hearing aids and regularly meeting with teachers, she readily coped. But now that she has interpreters, she worries that she's getting lazy in ber studies.

Her admitted love of being challenged helped spur her toward winning the Miss Deaf Pennsylvania contest. Staff Writer Life as a Penn State senior can be bectic enough. But for Reba Ann Matusof, it's even busier with the time-consuming role as Miss Deaf Pennsylvania. "I'm really glad I went out for it," she said.
