Washington and Hennepin Ava. DOCTORS And Eight Away Is What Business Men Demand for Central Avenue. Only One Opinion Is Expressed on Question of Constructing Fine Thoroughfare. Committee Appointed to Take Mat ter Up With Aldermen and Push Claims. A fine, well paved streot making a splendid driveway from the business cen ter of Minneapolis to Columbia heights Is the end which the members of the East Side Business Men's association have in view.

At the meeting last night plana for bringing about such a result were the chief topic of discussion. The meeting was representative onq and wa attended by prominent business men from all three of the wards on the East Side. A largs majority of them expressed themselves willing to work to secure the improvement of Central avenue, even at -tbe-sarrlfice or neighborhood interests, should that become necessary, 'as they believe that It would be of greatest benefit to the entire East Side. Paving for the avenue was considered the first requisite and much of the time of the meeting was taken tip with an ex amination into the merps of different kinds of material for paving purposes. Beniaman Van Harrgren addressed tne meeting in favor of the use of creosota block rather than brick or granite ana this seemed to meet with the approval of a majority of those present, though sev eral expressed the fear tnat it would not wear as well as a harder substance.

RESAW OLD BLOCKS. General Manager W. J. Hleld of the street railway company who attended tho meeting, gave It Is as his opinion that the cheapest and most practiranie plan would be to take up the present cedar blocks, have them rcsawed and put down again. He'also told hia audience that as soon as the frost is out of the ground the company will begin tbe work of lay ing a new pavement between the car tracks from Fourth street and Central avenue to Sixth and Hennepin.

Alderman Frank cassner of the ninth ward outlined a plan for the improvement of Central avenue not only on the East side proper but from the east end of the si eel arch bridge, saying that the part on Nicollet island needed as much attention as any other and was quite as important. Dr Kelsev. advocated paving the ave nue from Eighteenth to Twenty-ninth avenue northeast, but expresses himself as willing to yield this point in favor of the Improvement of tbe downtown section of the avenue in case it was found Impossible to secure an appropriation for paving the whole street. ADVANCE THE MONEY. Alderman Rand of the first ward stated that the best way to get Central avenue paved at once was for the property owners to advance the money to the citiy, ss there Is only $2.5.000, In the city treasury to be expended for paving the streets of" the entire city thlB year and many other streets are In a far worse condition than ihe East side thoroughfare.

Considerable objection was raised to this plan nd it was pointed out that as the improvement of Central avenue would benefit the whole East Minneapolis a few persons should not be made to bear the entire burden. The general sentiment, of the meetieg seemed to be that by working together and with a single aim it would be possi ble to persuade the council to appropri ate the necessary funds for the paving or the avenue. It was also suggested tnat the aldermen of the fourth ward should be urged to assist in the plan In order to have Hennepin avenue from the bridge west repaved. A committee composed of George Andrews. Louis Chute, Fred Barney, William M.

Mullen, H. L. Palhey. J. T.

El-well. M. Dvke. W. P.

Washburn, M. Velenlange and A. Sweat was appointed to Investigate the paving question, con fer with the aldermen and assist them in pushing the matter in the council. A resolution laying stress on the men which the resorts on Main street are to the East Side, indorsing Mayor Jones for the stand he has taken in driving them out and promising him every as sistance possible which was Introduced by W. Y.

Chute, was passed unanimously.
