It was called "A Cup of Kindness" and dealt with a young woman's efforts to kill her father- in-law with bad cooking and good poison.

It had pace and tension and packed some fine performances by Philip Bourneuf as the father-in-law and Jan Moultrie as a wacky old lady. Some workmanlike jobs were turned in by Norma Crane, Read Morgan and Jim McQuade. Lawrence Welk Wednesday ABC-TV show ticked off its sec ond telecast and I've watched both, a chore that I suppose comes under the heading of occupational hazards. Weik new show is strong on child performers, all of whom look like mirror images of the adults on the Welk show. They smile and play the organ and tap dance and listen to Welk say things like: "I want to show you how nice shes got her fingers fixed up and lipstick on 1'ke a big girl.

Isn't that ttr.n frankly, Lawrence, no. wen, To tell you the truth, there is something aboQt child performers with their cuddly bow ties, neatly slicked hair and patent leather smiles that I find almost unbearably offensive. And when I am forced to listen to them playing oom-pah music or ersatz Dixieland, I get the feeling that they would be far better oft playing at home with their hula-hoops. I will say nothing about Welk's champagne music except that it strikes me as formula music, singularly lacking in bubbles. It tastes more like yesterday's ginger ale flat and vapid.

However, for all those Welk fans entranced by the grins on Welk performers, I would recommend an occasional look at Welk band members who are not seen in close-up on camera. Perhaps not realizing they can be seen, the band members when someone else is soloing sit at their stands with looks of infinite boredom on their faces. It's only when the cameras zero in that the smiles click on like traffic lights. Chess i ed- eration member) and Tigran Pe trosian, of Russia, In that order to make up, with Fischer and Olafsson, the six qualifiers for next year.

Fischer finished with 12 out of a possible 20 points by scoring six victories, drawing 12 games, and losing twice. Benko was the only player besides Olafsson- to defeat him. He drew with all four of the Russians, an earlier re port that he beat Tal proving erroneous During his visit to Russia and the Portoroz touranment Bobby did not get to play either ex-world champion Vassily Smyslov or Paul Keres, who are perhaps the Soviet's strongest players except for world champion Mikhail Bot vinnik. Keres and Smyslov, who finished one-two in the last chal lengers' event, will be seeded into competition in next year's tour ney and Bobby will get his cnance to play them then. The winner of the tournament win meet isot vinnik in 1960 for the world's title It is unnecessary to elaborate on Fischer's remarkable showing at Portoroz.

He fully lived up to all his previous promise in his first trip abroad and nis nrst tournament where the competition was so stiff. He has "con vinced" European observers who at first tended to underrate him, saying, "After all, he's only 15." If his game continues to improve in the next two years as it has in the last two, Botvinnik's crown rests uneasily indeed upon his head today. Bobby now has returned home and resumed his studies as a junior at Erasmus Hall High School, Brooklyn. Last week there were reports that he was stranded in Yugoslavia for lack of funds to return home, but the $340 prize money he won was more than ample for plane fare back. He is writing a book on chess that is due to be published next year.

He says the thing he liked best at Portoroz was getting an even score with the four Russian grand masters Tal, Petrosian, Bronstein and The thing he liked least was having to sign hundreds of autographs. He also says he should have won the two games he lost, One of his games and another from the tournament are ap ponded. The first Philadelphia amateur championship will be held rn day, Saturday and Sunday at the Jardel recreation center, Cott-man and Pennway sts. It will be a six-round Swiss tournament conducted by the USCF in coop eration with the city Department of Recreation. The tournament is open to any player below the rank of master, but all players must be USCF members or join at the time of entenng.

Entry fee is $5, and entries will be accepted from 6 to 7.30 Friday night, with play starting at 8 p. m. The time limit will be 50 moves in two hours. Winner of the tourna ment will get the USCF Golden Kings Trophy for the city title, with other medals and awards going to second and third place winners, and first and second place finishers in classes and C. Iladclonfield Chess Club held its first meeting of the year Monday night with 16 members pres ent.

It was decided that regular meetings for the rest of the season would be held on 1 Tuesday nights at the Lutheran Church of Our Saviour. W.
