Righthander ick Sutcliffe, originally slated to pitch Thursday, has been moved up to today's starting assignment, as the Cubs open a six-game home stand against Montreal and the Phils Right-hander Bob Tewksbury, acquired earlier in the month In a trade that sent left-hander Steve Trout to the New York Yankees, is now the 10th different starting pitcher the Cubs have used this year. Since the trade, both Trout and Tewksbury are 0-2.

MONTREAL: In the Expos' 8-13 home stand, they scored the winning run in their last at-bat four times Today's starter, right-hander Bob Sebra of Gloucester Catholic High, pitched a three-hitter and struck out 14, his best ever, when he last faced the Cubs July 1. Jerry Mumphrey's ninth-inning home run beat him 1-0 The Expos went over 1 million in attendance Sunday on their 52nd home date. Last year they hit 1 million on their 68th date Left fielder Tim Raines has stolen 21 consecutive bases. N.Y. METS: The Mets have lost 16 games in their final at-bat this season.

Last year they won 24 games in their final at-bat and owned a 94-2 record in games when they led after eight innings Since Manager Dave Johnson shook up his lineup July 19, switching outfielder Darryl Strawberry from the fifth spot to the cleanup role and Gary Carter from cleanup to sixth. Strawberry is batting .320 with one homer and three RBIs, while Carter is hitting .200 with one homer and two RBIs. First baseman Keith Hernandez, batting .294, had his first extra-base hit in 41 at-bats with a double Sunday. PITTSBURGH: Manager Jim Ley-land indicated the Pirates are considering several options for left-hander Bob Kipper, who has one win in his last 10 starts. Kipper may be switched to the bullpen, sent to the minors or kept in the rotation.

Kipper is 0-3 with a 10.22 ERA in three starts since the All-Star break Outfielder R.J. Reynolds is in a 1-27 slump with 12 strikeouts The 6-5 California trip was their most successful since they won nine out of 10 games in San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco after the 1983 All-Star break. ST. LOUIS: Left-hander John Tudor pitched five innings for Triple-A Louisville Sunday and was charged with seven runs and seven hits. It was his second start for Louisville in his recuperation for a broken right leg.

He threw 58 pitches and had one strikeout and one walk in a game against Des Moines, Iowa. Four runs and five hits came in the first inning. Both Tudor and right-hander Danny Cox, out with a broken right foot, are to examined today by Dr. Stan London First baseman Jack Clark walked nine times in the four-game series against San Francisco over the weekend, increasing his season total to a career-high 100 Tonight's game against the Mets starts a string of 20 consecutive games against Eastern Division opponents in 20 days Yesterday's day off was the last for the Cardinals until Aug. 17.

Elsewhere ATLANTA: In a pre-game home run contest prior to yesterday's Hall of Fame Game in Cooperstown, N.Y., outfielders Dale Murphy and Gary Roenicke tied for the title with three each; each player got 10 swings. CALIFORNIA: Left-hander John Candelaria, who threw before the game Sunday, is scheduled to throw a simulated game today. CHICAGO: Right-hander Scott Nielsen started last night's game against Detroit after Jose DeLeon, the originally scheduled starter, suffered a bruised jaw and sore back in a morning auto accident in Chicago. The game marked Nielsen's first appearance ever against Detroit. MINNESOTA: The Twins are 5-6 since the All-Star break.

"We're 5-6 after playing against the Yankees, the Tigers and Toronto," says Manager Tom Kelly. "And that's not too bad; it could have been a lot worse." Upshaw came on to run for McGriff and trotted home on Leach's single to right. Barfield later scored on an error for the Blue Jays' final run. Oakland 6, California 1 Dave Stewart won his sixth straight game with a five-hitter as the Athletics beat the Angels. The A's are two games behind the first-place Minnesota Twins in the American League West, while third-place California lost its fourth consecutive game to drop 4 V4 behind.

Stewart, 13-7, struck out six and walked none in his third complete game of the season. Minnesota 4, Seattle 3 -Steve Lombardozzi hit a three-run homer to tie the score in the top of the ninth inning and Gary Gaetti hit a solo homer one out later, giving the Twins a victory. Seattle starter Mark Langston took a two-hitter and a 3-0 lead into the top of the ninth inning. He yielded an infield single to Greg Gagne leading off and walked Dan Gladden. Lombardozzi followed with his fourth home run of the season, a drive deep over the center-field fence.

Edwin Nunez, 3-2, relieved Langston and after Kirby Puckett hit a fly ball, Gaetti put the Twins ahead with his 20th homer of the season. It was the first run allowed by Nunez in his last 12 appearances. National League Los Angeles 6, San Francisco 5 Franklin Stubbs led off the bottom of the 12th inning with a home run to give the Dodgers a victory. Stubbs, who had been 0-for-5 in the game, hit his 14th homer of the season off reliever Scott Garrelts, 9-7, deep over the right-field fence. Tim Leary, 2-6, pitched the top of the 12th to earn the victory.

Associated Press Frank Tanana figured his Detroit teammates would come up with some offense if he hung on long enough. Bill Madlock's eighth-inning single, his third hit, scored Tom Broo-kens with the tie-breaking run to reward Tanana's seven-hitter and give Detroit a 4-1 victory last night over the Chicago White Sox. The Tigers, with their fourth straight victory, moved within a half-game of idle New York in the American League East. Detroit is 9-2 since the All-Star break. Brookens singled to lead off the eighth, Lou Whitaker singled to right and Madlock followed with his game-winning hit to left field and took second on the throw home.

After an intentional walk to Kirk Gibson, Alan Trammell greeted reliever Bobby Thigpen with a two-run single to make it 4-1. "We've been scoring late, so I felt I had to just keep us in the game long enough," said Tanana, 10-7, who struck out nine and walked one for his fourth complete game. "Frank was really on the plate tonight, right where he wanted it," Detroit Manager Sparky Anderson said. Texas 5, Milwaukee 4 Mike Stanley doubled in two runs with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Rangers a victory. Stanley's hit came off Brewers relief ace Dan Please, 4-4, who was seeking his 21st save.

But Plesac walked two batters in the ninth, then gave up Stanley's double to make a winner of Mitch Williams, 6-3. Toronto 10, Boston 8 Rick Leach singled home pinch-runner Willie Upshaw from third base to snap an eighth-inning tie as the Blue Jays rallied to beat the Red Sox. Trailing 8-7, George Bell singled with one out in the eighth off reliever Calvin Schiraldi, 5-6. An independent team in its first season, the Hawks have been in last place in the Eastern Division since the season started June 16. The team's record is 9-29 after Sunday's loss. "This was one of the hardest things I've had to do," General Manager Mai Fichman said Sunday. "I hired him and he's a friend of mine. I hope he remains a friend." Joe Decker, the Hawks' pitching coach, will take over as manager.

Outfielder Jeff Mace has been named player-coach. Hired in April, Thomas was one of only six blacks managing minor-league teams. "I guess it's like (former Los Angeles Dodgers vice president) Al Campanis said," Thomas said. "Maybe I was the type of person he was talking about." Campanis said on national television in April that some black baseball players "might not have the necessities" for managerial positions in baseball. Campanis later was forced to resign for his remarks.

"It was the lack of communication probably," Thomas said. Meanwhile, Ruth Hamison of Swe-desboro rolled a pair of fine scratch games in Westbrook Lanes to win the weekend Women's Amateur Bowlers' Association tournament. Schmeley defeated Ken Cartier of Beverly, 200-16-216 to 193-18-211, in the nip-and-tuck men's competition when he turkeyed three frames before getting a split in the 10th which would have opened the door for Cartier. However, Schmeley, who picked up $800 top prize money, converted the split and finished with a strike in the 12th to sew up the match.

Phil Kosek of Dover, was third ahead of George Dennis of Pennsauken and Bill Taylor of Pine Hill. In the women's competition, Jamison, who qualified third, started with a 203 scratch game to go with 21 handicap pins in the semifinal to easily defeat Eileen Connors of Deptford, 224-196, despite Connors' 33-pin handicap. Jamison then outrolled top qualifier Patti Murray of Bellmawr, 192-21-213 to 155-46-201. Murray got for second place and Conners earned $200. Vicky Hester of Camden was fourth, Jacki Dolbow of Sewell fifth, The Amateur Bowlers' Tour moves to Pierce Lanes in Wilmington, this weekend.
