INTERESTED OBSERVERS VPS DOWNS Rebel Fans Hot, Happy Bv GEORGE WHITTINGTON tlarion-Ledser Staff Writer Hot but happy. Screamingly happy. That's the way it was with Ole Miss fans at least, as the clock ran out on a 20-17 win for the Rebs Saturday. Not as big a score as the students might have liked, but a win, anyway.

And Archie was still Archie, even If he did have to throw eight away before connecting. When he did connect, at last, he made it three in a row for the one that counted. But then, there's something different about watching a game surrounded by Ole Miss students. Like Jack-in-a-box, or a kaleidoscope. Up-and-down, peekaboo, and try to see it.

Sometimes you can. Only in Mississippi Memorial Stadium, perhaps, could just regular folks find themselves surrounded by screaming under-grads, and still see and hear the things that counted. They couldn't quite drown out the superb public address system, which somehow cut through their chants. Not that one necessarily ends up in a student section. The kids end up in yours.

They passed entrance exams, of course, but when it comes to reading a Memorial Stadium ticket, they can't tell an ticket from a So they end up sitting in your lap, trying to scream down the announcer. At the gate, as you enter, a policeman tells you that orders of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board and the Stadium Commission are being carried out. Checking a bag of someone in front of you, a policeman says: "Really, they're not trying to carry in a lot of liquor. And we're not finding much. But we know some is getting by.

It's impossible to catch all of it." And suddenly, later, a fifth pops up among guess who? They don't care if it's 90 degrees, and the stuff makes them sweat even more than normal. It's an Ole Miss game, isn't it? Unfortunately, one learns later, the Rebs and the Wildcats almost turned up looking so much alike that maybe even the Johnnie Rebs in the stands couldn't have told Manning from Scruggs at a hundred yards. Seems the Wildcats packed the wrong uniforms when they left Lexington, bringing along white ones the color worn by Ole Miss. Only in Jackson did they discover the mistake. New ones were hurriedly ordered locally, and proper numbers affixed.

The jerseys arrived at the stadium just in time for the warm ups. It could have been catastrophic, maybe. But chances are that even a charged up Ole Miss fan could tell Archie from anybody, anywhere. Even at 90 and one-fifth degrees. ARCHIE PRAISES line coach James (Buster) Poole (with cap) and backup quarterback Shug Chumbler (10).

Lee, Stadium Saturday during Ole Miss' defensive unit is showing steady improvement. "Look and see who we lost from last season on defense. And then see who replaced them. "Most of the replacements are people who've been playing two years and waiting for a chance to start. They're strong, quick and experienced," Coleman said.

"And we know the only way to keep winning is if we improve from week to week." Then he turned his attention to the offensive unit's abundance of publicity. "We don't care who gets the publicity as long as we win. We're playing as a unit," he continued. Then he spoke for the unit. "What we all want is to win the SEC title." Confirmed From Page 1C think we may have had a few more touchdowns, too." Meanwhile, Ole Miss Coach Johnny Vaught agreed with Manning's appraisal of the Kentucky defense.

"They played well. They're always tough as hell against us anyway," he said. "Kentucky showed us some good aggressive defense. I'm just proud to win. That's what counts in the long run." He thought the Rebels didn't play as well as they are capable.

"I don't think we were sharp. We didn't start out sharp. We looked sluggish to me." The Ole Miss offense usually seems to get the bulk of the publicity, but Vaught had his warmest words for the Rebel defense. 1' MMli -mmhV -Ti ns-mis hittrf'i tA---i- OUT TO TJLK SOCK-FOOTED BOOT "I think our defense is really coming around.
