THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL COMMUNITY FRIDAY, MARCH 18, 2005 A-5 i State foundation awards $7,508 to Nuestra Casa Family Center The Dally Journal The Foundation of the State Bar of California has awarded a $7,508 grant to Nuestra Casa, a Latino Family Resource enter in Ukiah. The Foundation grant will fund a monthly series of law-related forums in Spanish for the community and the training of an Outreach Worker on legal forms and information. Scheduled forums are: April 14 Juvenile Offenders and Gang Member Databases with Lawrence Wilson, Public Defender May 19 DMV, Insurance and Consumer Issues with Barry Vogel, Attorney June 30 Landlord Relationships with Angelica Millan, Attorney All workshops win either be presented in Spanish or Spanish translation will be provided and all will be held at Nuestra Casa, 487 N. State Street, Ukiah, from 6:30 8:30 p.m. The monthly forums will focus on many aspects of the law and locally available legal services.

In addition to the forums mentioned above are ones on sexual harassment, worker's compensation, family court, disability, rights against unreasonable search and seizure, education rights 'and public assistance among Free monthly legal clinics are also available to the community where local attorneys answer legal questions for Latino community members. Interested participants sign up for appointments at Nuestra Casa on Wednesday evenings. The acronym in the tide of the funded project, La LEY. which means; "the law" in Spanish, stands for Leyes Educacion Ya (Laws and Education Now). "The Foundation of the State Bar of California is proud to support Nuestra Casa's efforts to provide legal services for Spanish-speaking immigrants in Mendocino County, said Leslie Hatamiya, the Foundation's Executive Director.

"By training an Outreach Worker and holding free legal clinics and educational forums, this program furthers the Foundation's goal of educating the public about its rights and responsibilities under the law and improving access to the justice system for all." Nuestra Casa received one of 39 grants totaling $325,595 that the Foundation recently awarded to California organizations conducting important projects that educate the public about its rights and responsibilities under the law and that increase access to the justice system by all people. Since 1991, the Foundation has awarded more than $2.5 million in grants to non-profit organizations, the State Bar of California, local bar associations, and California courts for law-related education and service projects. The Foundation of the State Bar of California is dedicated to promoting, improving, and building public trust and confidence in the rule of law. She said her topic was how money is made and then used in the local economy: from the Federal Mint, the bank to the grocery store, back to the bank, etc. Kris says the lesson helped her class to understand why it is good to spend money in the local community where it recycles itself.
