Clay's manager.

Bill Faver-sham, admitted Wednesday that he has no quick answers. "I would hate to estimate the time it will take to settle the issues," he said. Originally, the heavyweight championship bout was scheduled for Sept. 28 but Faversham said that date has been discarded because "some things have to be ironed out." One hurdle, he continued, Is the World Boxing Association which dropped Liston from its list of heavyweight contenders after his encounter with Denver police and the disclosure of the return bout clause in the contract for the first fight. Clay dethroned Liston in February, when the champion failed to answer the bell for the seventh round of their bout in Miami Beach.

Faversham said the WBA will hold its annual convention in Norfolk, Aug. 26-30 and "I'm hoping they will recognize Liston as the top challenger." Intercontinental Promotions, In which Liston formerly had an interest, will pick the site. "I haven't talked with them in more than a week," Faversham said. And just to show you that football fans over the state are hungry for a look-see at the 1964 Rebs and Bullies, we can report herewith that Jackson's downtown hotels and motels are already booked solid for the week end of Sept. 26. A limited number of rooms may still be available at motels on the city's outskirts, but they, too, will be reserved in a few more days and the overflow will hit motels in nearby cities and towns within a radius of 50 miles or mora. Wildcats Will Be THIS WRITER is firmly convinced that the Kentucky Cats, coached by Charlie Bradshaw, will be most improved team in the Southeastern Conference this season For the first time since he took over at Kentucky, Bradshaw will have sufficient manpower to mix it on even terrm with other SEC squads. The 1964 Wildcat roster will list 65 or more rugged and talenled athletes who have survived Bradshaw's gruelling program.

Kentucky will field an explosive backfield group centered around Halfbacks Rodger Bird, 193, a junior, and Frank Antonini, 207, sophomore: Quarterback Rick Norton, junior, and Fullback Mike (Quick Draw) McGraw, 193, another soph. Bird averaged 4.5 yards per carry and caught 15 passes for 208 yards with a losing team last season. Norton hit Dupree, Granger THE STATE vs. Florida "nightcap" at Memorial Stadium on September 26 will feature a head-on duel between the two top candidates for All-SEC honors at fullback, Larry Dupree of the Gators and Hoyle Granger of the Bullies. Florida Coach Ray Graves pulls no punches in singing the praises of Dupree, 5-11 and 195, heading into his senior campaign.

"I've been associated with college football for 25 years," Graves says, "and Dupree is the greatest runner I've ever seen. I also rank him as one of the greatest blocking fullbacks I've ever seen. He's an All-America in every respect, including charaotr and determination." And to give you an idea of the rugged task confronting State linemen when they go against the Gators, leave us list Florida's four top tackles: Dennis Murphy, 252; Syd Mac-Lean, 224; John Whatley, 234, and Larry Gagner, 237, all of them lettermen and Murphy a second team All-SEC selection. The Bulldogs and Gators played at Gainesville last season with State staging a great last-half rally that brought 9-9 tie with a favored Florida squad that finished the campaign 6-3-1. PHIPPS Associated Press Writer OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -Russ Kemmerer is dividing his time these days between the pulpit and the mound. The 32-year-old relief pitcher for the Oklahoma City 89ers also is doing a job from the pulpit of the Chapel Hill Methodist Church. That's where Kemmerer is devoting his time these days when he isn't on the road on a Pacific Coast League tour or practicing for a home game. Kemmerer's love of baseball dates back to his childhood Pittsburgh. But his relatively new desire for the ministry is no less strong because it started later in his life.

LAST SEASON In fact, Kemmerer says this will probably be his last season with the Houston Colts farm team. The right-hander's decision to work for the ministry came in 1959 while he was with the Chicago White Sox. "There is a minister in Illinois named Dr. Charles Smith," Kemmerer said. "I guess it was he who helped me see that I could use what talents I have to "I've been very anxious.

They told me not to say anything until it became official. I've just been sitting on edge down here." "Down here" is a peach orchard that Pooley owns in Waynesboro near the South Carolina line 20 miles South of Augusta, where he has lived since 1951. 'VERY PROUD' "I'm very proud," Hubert said of his selection. "Anybody would be silly to say he's not proud of an honor like this." The statistics that made up Hubert's glorious years with the Crimson Tide bulge like a football player muscles. He played quarterback, fullback and halfback.

Hubert crossed the goal line 35 times during the years and carved out one of the greatest careers in National and Southern foot ball. Have things changed much since those football years of the early 1920s? "No. The fundamentals are about the same," said Hubert. There's still the blocking, tackling, kicking, passing and the good running, too, that count the most." Hubert did all of these with a par excellence that few have matched. BIG INTEREST "The game brings out more people now, but I don't believe there's any greater interest.

When we went to the Rose Giants Play Packers In Exhibition FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) The New York Giants demonstrated signs Wednesday of being charged up for their second exhibition game of the year Saturday night at Green Bay against the Packers. The Giants lost the National Football League championship playoffs to the Packers in both 1961 and 1962. Veteran flanker Frank Gilford, who had been scratched for the Packer game because of a pulled groin muscle, appeared to have mended and will play against Green Bay. It was not certain yet whether Gifford or speedster Homer Jones of Texas the fastest rookie on the squad, would start at flanker, but both will play.

The Giants looked sluggish in their opening loss to the Minnesota Vikings. The Packers also dropped their first exhibition game, to St. Louis. The New York team flies to Minneapolis Friday afternoon for the game. GROUCHY STOMACH? Kemmerer, who is married, couldn't just drop out of baseball to enter a seminary. So he has devoted off-seasons and nights to a series of correspondence study courses to prepare him for a new career. DIFFERENT WORLD "It's a different world," he said, "and at first I was afraid I couldn't move from the worldly life of baseball to the secular life. "Dr. Smith helped me see that my sports life gave me two things to offer.

I have lived the problems I am expected to help others with, and having been in pro sports helps me get through to voung people. Kemmerer has completed his vears of correspondence work, and now needs to complete his work on a bachelor's degree in order to be ordained in the Methodist ministry. In the meantime, he's putting a busy season with the 89ers. He has pitched in 36 games and has a 64 record. "I'm going to miss baseball," he admits.

"But there's a whole new life waiting in the church. "I'm ready." Bowl game in 1926 (his last year of playing at Alabama) we had a whole train car of folks who went," he said. Hubert also teaches school in Waynesboro and coaches the high school football team which has done right well. Most of the statistics are gone from his mind now. But he still remembers several incidents such as the time he sneaked into the line of the Rose Bowl game, as a back, and stopped a California drive four yards from the goal line.

"We threw them off with that line," he said. "They weren't expecting it. I just sort of slipped in there. They didn't know where I came from," he said. Then Hubert touched on the core of sports.

LIKED TO WIN "We hated to lose, you know. And we didn't lose much. We lost one game in 1923 and one in 1924 and none in 1925. In that game against Georgia Tech in 1925 I was credited with 25 tackles. They didn't keep many records then but they kept that one because I guess it was a little unusual," he said.

Hubert says he sees two or three games a year now and always makes it a point to see Alabama when the team plays in Georgia. "I was in Tuscaloosa a couple weeks ago and I met a lot of old friends then," he said, "including some I used to play with or knew back in those days." In those days Hubert was in charge of a boarding house at Alabama where about 25 students lived. GIVEN HELP "There wasn't as much to help a boy in those days. But they'd try to give you a job or let you find work around the school. The school helped me.

"I started in engineering at the school and then switched to commerce," he said. Hubert has a daughter who lives in Los Angeles and a son who lives in Atlanta. From 40 odds years back he also recalls another singular honor given him. "I was voted the most valuable Player in the Southern Conference and I consider it a great honor. I think there were 22 schools in the conference then nicluding teams from Maryland and Kentucky," said Hubert.

Yoimgclinan Is Traded To NY Jets PEEKSKILL. N.Y. (AP) -The New York Jets of the American Football league bought veteran defensive end Sid Youngelman, an original member of the team, from Buffalo Wednesday. Jets Coach Wecb Ewbank said his club, 0-1 in the young exhibition season, needed a pass rusher. Youngelman, who played in three bowls for Alabama, is a native of Newark and now lives in Brooklyn.

Youngelman, 6-5 and 261, played eight years in the NFL before he came to the AFL in first season as a member of the New York Titans. After two years with the Titans he went to Buffalo in 1962. The Jets, who play the Boston Patriots Saturday night at Lowell. came tip with two fullback Injures. Matt Snell, the top Jets rookie, pulled a muscle in his right leg, and Mark Smol-inski hurt his right kne.

Most Improved on 79 of 182 passes for 1177 yards and six TD's. Antonini and McGraw were the aces on a perfect-record frosh squad which annihilated the Tennessee yearlings by a score of something like 60 to (I. Rick Kestner, 205-pound junior, is ranked with the best ends in the South and Maurice Moorman, 246-pound tackle on that great U-K freshman outfit, will be a starter. Bradshaw has talented personnel in depth this season and Kentucky, which had a 3 6-1 record in '63, just might come up with something like a 6-3-1 mark in '64. One certainty is that Ola Miss, going against the Cats immediately after its "grudgo fame" opener with Memphis State on September 19 at Oxford, will have to be in peak form to open its SEC slate with a victory.

In 'Showdown' Their September 26 battle in Jackson looms as another close one with both squads shooting the works in an effort to get off to a winning start in SEC combat. THE FINANCIAL affluence of firmly established National Football League clubs is clearly evidenced by the fact that the New York Giants have sold out their 1961 season tickets a total of 56,000 and have a waiting hst of thousands of would-be spectators. And the Giants, as well as all other NFL clubs, pick up slightly more than $1,000,000 this season and next under a two-year TV deal with the Columbia Broadcasting System. JACK NICKLAUS and Arnold Palmer are certain to pass the $100,000 mark in official PGA golf winnings this year. The latest fipres showed Nicklaus with $96,217 to his credit and Palmer second with a total of $90,442.

ONE OF several reasons why the Yankees are reeling in the stretch of the AL pennant race lies in the fact that Mickey Mantle (.311) is tha lone member of the team hitting .300 or better.
