Friday, May 3, 1974 Philadelphia Inquirer 7-C 4 I.J -yr -v-. -ViA. Frazier-Quarry Guaranteed $300,000 in TV Fight Doubleheadef From Inquirer Wire Service NEW YORK -1 Formal announcement came Thursday of a June 17 closed-circuit television fight doubleheader featuring battles pitched 3,000 miles apart. Bob Foster will defend his world light heavyweight championship for the 14th time when he meets Argentina's Jorge Ahumada in a 12- round bout at Albuquerque, N.M., following a 12-rounder in New York between ex-heavyweight titlist Joe Fra-zier and third-ranking contender Jerry Quarry. The- heavyweights are guaranteed $300,000 against 62'2 percent of the take, according to the announcement by Teddy Brenner, boxing president of Madison Square Garden.

"The kids need new shbes," Joltin Joe Cracked "The rent is behind, the car payments are due, the Cadillac needs new springs, the wife is about ready to put me out of the house and the cows need new grazing." This will be the 30-year-old' Frazier's first appearance since losing a unanimous 12-round decision to Muhammad Ali in their much-heralded rematch Jan. 28. The ex-champ has lost only twice in 32 pro bouts. "Frazier and I gave you a hell of a fight last time," said the 28-year-old Quarry at a Garden news conference. "I just got in with too much of a fighter that time.

But now I'm grown up, I'm a man, and I'm coming here to beat him." The fight is contingent on a Quarry victory over New Yorker Joe Alexander next Wednesday night in the Nassau Coliseum at Uniondale, N.Y. Boxing Commissioner Edwin Dooley warned that if Alexander wins, the Frazer-Quarry bout is off. "Joe Alexander won't hit me in the rear with a handful of rice," Quarry retorted. "There's no way I'll let him stand in the way of this fight." Frazier stopped Quarry after seven rounds in June, 1969, and went on to win the world championship. He held the title until Jan.

His last outing, Dec. 14, was a one-round knockout against Earnie Shavers. The second half of the twin bill will originate at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
