But Al indicated he might take it upon himself to lo so. But if not for the misfortune that struck the third member of the Viceroy Racing Team, Mario Andretti, the whole controversy would have been academic. Andretti, running with a lead of more than 40 seconds -over Leonard, c.me in for what should have been his fourth and final fuel stop of the 164th lap.

I But routine turne to disaster when his gear shift lever stuck and he couldn't get the car moving. It took more than six minutes of banging and slamming to get the lever working, costing him 11 laps and dropping him to a seventh place finish. THAT LEFT Leonard with a lead of more thai a lap en Rutherford and Unser, a seemingly comfortable margin. That edge evaporated shortly afterward when Leonard made two pit stops during the fourth and final caution period which was caused by Jimmy Caruthers' flaming crash into the third-turn wall on lap 173. Leonard pitted immediately for fuel, allowing both Rutherford and Unser to pass him and get into the same lap.

Then on the next lap, he cut a tire and had to come in again, allowing the other two to further cut into his lead. Unser, meanwhile, passed Rutherford and, one lap after the green flag came out again, he passed Leonard to take the No. 1 spot. But no. one outside the scoring booth knew it.

But George Bignoth, the chief mechanic for all three Viceroy Team cars, had Leonard ahead on his scoring sheet so he ordered both cars into Victory Lane. When the unofficial decision was announced, it was "computed that Leonard, a 37-year-old former motorcycle champion- from San Jose had averaged a record 154.781 miles per hour, more than 16 MPH faster than the currently injured Mark Dono-hue averaged in winning the inaugural race here last year. Leonard's fifth career victory on the USAC championship trail was worth approximately $85,000 from a $375,000 purse.

But, as far as Al Unser and Johnny Rutherford are concerned, that is still debatable. PIT STOPS There were 11 lead changes involving six drivers. ANDRETTI'S had to be the hardest to swallow. The 30-year-old former three-time national driving champion from nearby Nazareth, seemed to have his 32d United States Auto Club national championship race victory in the bag. But it slpiped out of his grasp when an overheated bushing on the gearshift lever of his Viceroy-Parnelli-Offen-hauser prevented him from getting the car into gear on his fourth and final pit stop. "I was running out of fuel when I came into the pits," Andretti said.

I wanted to keep it running and in first gear while they refueled me. But it stalled and I had to put it into neutral so they could restart the engine. IT DIDN'T take long to start the car. George Bignotti, chief mechanic for the cars drvien by Andretti, Al Unser and eventual Schaefer 500 winner Joe Leonard, diagnosed the problem immediately. He wanted to remove the plate in the rear and push it into gear there. Mario tried to work it from inside the cockpit, but they eventually had to do it Bignot-ti's way. Meanwhile, Andretti lost more than six minutes and 11 laps and the hope of snapping a losing streak that now is in its 26th month. BETTENHAUSEN'S problem might have been easier to take only because it happened before victory appeared so close.

Gary, who dropped out of this year's Indianopolis 500 while leading, had a comfortable edge on the 78th lap when his Sunoco-McLaren-Offy quit in the backstretch while the field was running under the caution flag. The car was towed to the pits and the Roger Penske crew worked on it diligently for the better part of an hour before giving up. "It was a failure in the ignition system," Penske said. "We changed the distributor, but it still wouldn't start." BOBBY UNSER who started from the pole position for the 12th time in the last two years, was clearly the fastest on the track, but after leading laps 5 through 11, he darted i nto th pits with a shift problem. His Olsonite-Eagle-Offy still ran strong but 'the problem got, worse and, despite emergency repairs by his crew, he had to park it after his eighth stop on lap 77.

It was the eighth time he failed to finish in two seasons. Gordon Johncock, a journeyman driver from Franklin, who got a chance at a first-class ride last year when he was signed by the McLaren Team, finally has gotten his car to go fast. Two weeks ago, he led a 200-miler at Michigan only to have engine troubles knock him out. The same thing happened to him here. JOE LEONARD'S controversial victory boosted his lead in the national championship point standings to 1,020 points.

The defending champ has 2,640 to 1,620 for Al Unser. Mark Donohue, who is recuperating from a knee operation suffered a month ago in a crash, is third with 1,240, 1,000 of which he earned by winning at Indianapolis. AT INDIANAPOLIS last May, Sam Posey finished fifth as the highest place rookie. He was not happy when Mike Hiss, who finished seventh, was voted Rookie of the year. At Pocono, Posey finished fifth again while Hiss was sixth.

Sam has to be a little happier this time, though, because he was voted the Rookie of the year here. Backup Center Signed by Suns PHOENIX, Ariz.
