Phila. Gambler Mrs. Adlai Stevenson John Carpenter of Beverly, Mass. She married Stevenson Dec. 1, 1928, at the age of 19 and divorced him when she was 40.

Gov. Stevenson blamed the divorce on "the mutual in-compatability of our lives." Mrs. Stevenson, a fourth generation Chicagoan. was a member of a wealthy family. Her father was John Borden, millionaire oil magnate, explorer and adventurer.

SHE ATTENDED the exclusive University School for Girls in Chicago and St. Timothy's boarding school in Maryland. She never entered college but spent a year in Italy studying art, music and languages. She married Stevenson when he was a struggling Chicago attorney. After the divorce she urged him to run for governor and campaigned strenuously for him in his successful campaign.

Mrs. Stevenson called herself an independent voter. Before the 1952 presidential conventions, she said she would vote for a Republican, but later denied all the unflattering statements she had made when her divorced husband was mentioned as a dark horse presidential candidate. She never remarried. Delaware Valley Deaths JAFFE, Mrs.

Ruling Reversed In Pool Mishap A $125,000 damage award to a Pittsburgh teen-ager who broke his neck diving into a shallow backyard wading pool in 1965 was overturned Friday by the Third U.S.

Circuit Court of Appeals. The majority of the three-judge court, sitting in Philadelphia, said John A. Colo-simo, 15 at the time of the accident, should have known he was taking a risk by diving into 2Y2 feet of water. The Colosimo family had won the $125,000 judgment in the U.S. District Court for Western Pennsylvania from their neighbors, Mr.

and Mrs. James P. Hughes, who owned the pool, and the May Department Store which sold the pool to the Hugheses. That court found the acci- dent was caused by the presence of a diving platform, the lack of warning signs and a slippery vinyl bottom which slid the boy's hands apart and made him strike his head. A well-known West Philadelphia numbers banker with a record of 51 gambling arrests since 1942 testified this week before the special grand jury investigating police corruption.
