"Monday, June 26, 1972 Philadelphia Inquirer 19 Tempers As Count LONG POND, Pa. All the sitting around and watching the skies by the drivers waiting for the start of practice for the Schaefer 500 at Pocono International Raceway finally began to take its toll Sunday. The tension erupted publicly during the afternoon when driver Steve Krisiloff had a run-in with Raceway parking officials in the garage area. Krisiloff apparently tired of explaining who he was and drove through a restricted area. The officials chased him, both on foot and in a car, to where he hed parked. The affair finally was settled after a heated 10-rrinute discussion. IT ALL WENT for naught, however, when water seepage in two areas forced cancellation of any practice at 4:10 P. M., much to the disappointment of more than 2,000 spectators. "The rains of the past several days have completely saturated the ground, both next to and under the track," a track spokesman explained. "It has no place to go and is seeping onto the surface in the first turn and between the second and third turns." Dick King, United States Auto Club director of competition and chief steward for this race, said engineers informed him that a few hours of sunshine would "cure" the track of seepage. He said he hoped to be able to open the course for practice at noon today for the first time in six days. MEANWHILE, it seemed AARDE CINEMA 2021 SANSOM ST. Logical, yes, but hardly factual. Wally Dallenbach spent Sunday morning trying to make up his mind whether to hang around Pocono in hopes of getting some practice, head for Trenton, N. J., where he was scheduled to drive in a pair of 50-lap midget car events, or head for his home and family in East Brunswick, N. J. The 35-year-old driver was just about ready to undertake the 90-minute trip to Trenton when officials there bowed to rain for the second week in a row. MEL KENYOX, however, did go to Trenton where he was to start from the pole position, but he made it back to Pocono by afternoon. Four Championship Trail veterans weren't within 750 miles of Pocono. The Unser Brothers, Al and Bobby, along with Roger McCluskey and Gordon Johncock, were in Terre Haute, Ind., for a 100-lap late model stock car race. None of them had much luck, however. The day's blase award went unanimously to Mark Dono-hue. With drivers and crews bustling continuously through the garage area, the defending Schaefer 500 champion and reigning Indianapolis 500 king was cleaning his car. NOT HIS SLEEK blue No. 66 Offenhauser though. Dono-hue labored meticulously over his personal Chevrolet Monte Carlo much to the delight of several dozen hardy spectators who1 had braved the threat of even more rain in hopes of seeing the racers in action. The revised schedule for the race is satisfactory from most drivers' point of view but there are a lot of unhappy mechanics around. "We're going to have our hands full to say the least," one veteran mechanic complained. "We'll be working day and night to tear down the cars and put in new engines between qualifying (on Thursday) and the race (1 P.M. Sunday).
