Philadelphia Inquirer 3-D ins One for Footbal anova Sunday, Nov. 12, 1972 Vill wwr-BiMHi i-xi-ikiii 11 Ulr i-Mrmi itrnriiiiirit il ilnlli l'Hf Farmer and Lionel Shaw introduced themselves to the end zone against the Musketeers (3-7). And the Wildcat offensive line did a big number, blowing the Ohioans off the line of scrimmage most of the day at Villanova Stadium. Farmer had a big day, the biggest of the season for Villanova. The 21-year-old junior rushed for 120 yards on 17 carries, one a 53-yard TD run that gave the Wildcats a 7-0 lead at 6:21 of the first period.

XAVIER DID NOT come out throwing as expected. Especially since they had put the ball in the air 60 times last week and 54 the week before. By the end of the game it was apparent why. The Villanova secondarv diately at the Xavier 42. in 11 plays it was 13-0, with Shaw scoring from the four over a fine block by Mark Srsic.

It became 19-0 with 4:15 left in the half when the Wildcats put together a 60-yard drive, Shaw scoring from the one. Xavier refused to die. Dydo, who has used the pass sparingly, let it all hang out. He hit three straight and moved the musketeers to the Wildcat 10. Then he sent John Wright into the teeth of a Wildcat blitz for the score with 2:42 left.

And the Musketeer got another chance, recovering an onside kick at the Villanova 4S. But the Wildcat defense, led by John givens, hurled Xavier back to its own 34. picked off musketeer quarterback Tim Dydo four times, Kevin Dobbins leading the interceptors with two. Paul Selitto's one snare went for a 57-yard touchdown return, and freshman Steve Ramsey Grabbed a Dydo aerial at the Wildcats one. Dobbins' final interception came deep in the final period and looked headed right to Frank Polito, the nation's top interceptor last year.

"I couldn't believe it," Polito laughed. "I said here comes one to me, and he (Dobbins) steps right in front of me. I just started laughing." AFTER FARMER got the Wildcats started, the defense, again turning in a super effort, got the ball back imme SELITTO'S interception at 5:06 of the third quarter bur ied Xavier for real. From there it was a matter of how much. "It feels so good," Ferry beamed in the dressing roorpi celebrating only the Wildcats? second win in 10 games.

can't say enough for these kids. They don't give up' on themselves. This gives us "a real lift for the Temple game." Givens, who was in Dydo's hair most of the afternoon-, was near tears. I "It's great, really great," the big redhead said. "We've been so unfortunate all year, it makes you cry.

This is just what we needed." Pic Agate Xavier's and Paul Selitto Pickard grabs pass from Kevin Dobbins (24) By CHUCK NEWMAN Of The Inquirer Staff The Rev. Edward J. McCarthy will add a trophy to his office on Monday morning. It might more appropriately belong in the athletic director's office, but the football team wants it in the office of Villanova's president. The trophy will be a football the game ball in Villanova's 40-13 victory over Xavier on Saturday.

On it will be inscribed: "We want to keep football." It will be signed by all the members of the Wildcat team. "It's something the boys want to do," said Coach Lou Ferry in the jubilation of the Wildcats' dressing room. "We talked about it all week." It appeared Villanova did more than talk about football last week. "WHAT WAS written in the papers about the school dropping football really had us psyched up," said Bill Hatty, the Villanova quarterback. "We were kidding all week about getting 40 points to show that we really wanted to keep football here." It seemed inconceivable that the Wildcats could get 40 points against anybody if you went by the offensive record.

A key figure showed that the team had only three rushing touchdowns, all by quarterback Mike Sunday. But running backs Ed Temple Blanks R. Graves Sets a Record 9D ElLDDCT BStl LP HOG Rhode Is-after the the sidelines while land had the ball second touchdown. WISE, WIPE TRACTION RETREAD I I ri 6.00-13 Late in the period, Ginestra hit Graves for 15 yards to tie the record and again for 18 to break it, putting the ball at the Rams' 28. But a fumble followed, and then Rhode Island quarterback Paul Ryan, back to pass, was chased into the end zone and tackled by end Charlie Liott for a safety and the final points.

I NEW TIRE GUARANTEE 2G DEEPER 2 YEARS ANTTRCTED WEAR FREE FOUfJIifJO 1 6 ANt-America no 1 By ALLEN LEWIS Of The inquirer Staff Clint Graves is a 6-foot, 180-pound split end who has a bushel of moves and almost as many pass catches in his career on Temple University's football team. Graves broke two Temple records for reception Saturday at Temple Stadium as the Owls shut out Rhode Island University, 22-0.

The way Temple and Graves started out, it appeared the game might be a track meet. The Owls scored the first two times they got the ball and Graves caught seven passes in the first period. But Rhode Island's defense stiffened after that, and it wasn't until the third touchdown midway through the final period that the victory wh'ch gave Temple a 4-4 record for the season was clinched. GRAVES, who started the game fourth in the nation in pass-receiving, finished with 15 catches for 148 yards. The 15 receptions broke the old mark of 14, set by Jerry Loviglio against Buffalo in 1968, and his career total of 114 broke the previous standard of 105 established by split end Jim Callahan in 1966-68.

And, surprising as it may seem, the Virginia Beach resident didn't realize he'd broken a record with his 106th catch until it happened on a pass into the flat good for six yards near the close of the first period. "WHEN HE (the referee) handed me the ball, I really didn't know why," Graves said, "and when I saw everyone running on the field I couldn't imagine what was going on." "We had told the referee we wanted time out after Graves' next catch," said Temple coach Wayne Hardin, who told quarterback Doug Shobert to divert Graves' attention on WAYS TO CHARGE Portable Cassette AMFM DIGITAL RECORDER PLAYER CLOCK RADIO SOLID STATE hi-impact CASE by PROCTOR-SILEX 2-SLECE PKiLLY'S FAVORITE ARMY-NAVY STORE 0s STEAM and DRY IROiJ TOASTER 902 CHESTNUT ST. THERE WAS no more scoring until Temple took advantage of an interception and four-yard return by corner-back Dan Faulkner in the final period.
