By Marc Narducci INQUIRER STAFF WRITER The big winners in the opening of the NJSIAA football playoffs over the weekend were the Olympic Conference, the higher seeds, and the Colonial Conference. The weekend action provided few surprises, although some top teams had anxious moments.

Here's a look at the big winners. The Olympic Conference. It should come as no surprise that the Olympic Conference fared well in the opening round since it is considered among the best conferences not only in South Jersey but statewide. The Olympic had five teams in the playoffs Shawnee, Cherokee and Washington Township from the American Division, and Wood-row Wilson and Camden Catholic from the National Division. All five won opening-round games.

Of course, all five were higher-seeded teams. This week, that record won't be repeated because Washington Township will host Cherokee in a Group 4 semifinal at 7 p.m. Friday. Other than Township, the rest of the Olympic Conference teams will be considered underdogs this week. Even though Woodrow Wilson is a top seed, the Tigers won't be favored in Saturday's game against Willingboro, The Inquirer's top-ranked team.

Third-seeded Camden Catholic will meet No. 2 seed Immacu-lata (9-0) in Parochial 3, and Shawnee will visit Jackson (9-0) in a Group 4 semifinal. Jackson has won 22 games in a row and beat Shawnee, 21-14, in overtime during last year's South Jersey Group 4 final. Higher seeds. In the 16 public school playoff games, the higher seed won 14 of the contests.

The only exceptions were No. 6 Sterling beating No. 3 Woods-town, 15-0, in Group 2, and No. 5 Woodbury beating No. 4 Florence, 42-6, in Group 1.

Of the parochial schools, Holy Cross was a No. 7 seed and trounced No. 2-seeded Notre Dame, 48-7, but that was no big surprise because many had questioned Notre Dame's strength of schedule. Colonial Conference. The Colonial went 4-1 in the opening round.

In addition to Sterling's upset of Woodstown, the Colonial received first-round wins from Paulsboro and Woodbury in Group 1 and Haddonfield in Group 2. Only Haddon Heights failed to win, dropping a 26-6 decision to Glassboro. Glouco woes for Florence. Over the years, Florence has been one of South Jersey's most spected programs. This year, the Flashes qualified for the playoffs for the 12th time since Trout gets By Kristian Pope INQUIRER SUBURBAN STAFF A fan at a Washington Township football game once asked Dave Trout why his son, Meredith, the team's place kicker, tries so hard.

"The guy asked, 'Why does he blast for the scoreboard on extra Trout said. For Meredith Trout, known to most of his family and friends as Merf, the answer is simple. "My dad always taught me kick with the same force and technique for extra points that you would use for field goals," Merf Trout said. "That's because when you do get the chance to kick a long field goal, you don't want to get back there and miss because you aren't used to doing it." That advice has been invaluable for Trout, a freshman for the Minutemen, who advanced in the South Jersey Group 4 playoffs on Friday with a 34-7 victory over Toms River North. Mayers has at least two more games to play, Friday against Washington Township and the regular-season finale against Winslow Township. Here are the career rushing leaders in South Jersey: 1, Kevin Sinclair, Ocean City, 5,380 yards, 1996. 2, Gary Fauntleroy, Kingsway, 5,069, 1994. 3, Rob Marshall, Clayton, 4,701, 1991. 4, Sean Mayers, Cherokee, 4,341, 2001.

Saturday's 42-6 first-round loss to visiting Woodbury gave Florence an 0-8 career playoff record against Gloucester County schools. The Flashes are 8-3 against the rest of their playoff opponents. But Florence shouldn't feel too bad. Gloucester County schools have won the last 15 Group 1 titles. With Paulsboro, Glassboro and Woodbury still alive in the four-team field, it's a good chance the streak will continue.

Even though Shawnee is involved in a South Jersey playoff game this week, the Renegades will play on Thanksgiving at rival Lenape. Haddonfield running back Anthony Frizano has rushed for 1,336 yards and 21 touchdowns on 164 carries. He has scored 24 total touchdowns for the 8-1 Bulldogs, who have won eight games in a row.

With a 29-8 career playoff record, Paulsboro has the most postseason wins in South Jersey history. The other teams with at least 15 playoff wins are Holy Cross (20-12), St. Joseph (19-10), Glassboro (18-10), Hammonton (16-14), Delsea (15-7), and Cherokee (15-10). Has anybody noticed what a good job first-year school Lindenwold has done? The Lions are 3-7 and will be favored in their season finale Nov. 28 against winless Timber Creek.

That Holy Cross-Don Bosco Prep rematch will not occur this year because Delbarton beat Don Bosco, 14-12, on Saturday. Holy Cross (8-1), which beat Don Bosco Prep, 41-40, in last year's Parochial 4 state title game, will travel to Delbarton (9-0) for Saturday's Parochial 4 semifinal. Last year, Holy Cross beat Delbarton, 35-34, in the semifinals. Marc Narducci's e-mail address is mnarducciphillynews.com. footsteps et teams.

Minutemen coach Tom Brown asked Trout to be part of the team as a freshman Brown prefers to play upper-classmen because of his potential as a kicker and quarterback. Brown decided to bring him along slowly, even though Trout has the potential to be a starter on offense. This season for the Minutemen, Trout has had only one field-goal attempt. He made a 38-yard field goal with a high cross-wind against Lenape Oct. 26.

Trout's destiny may be to play quarterback. He said his hobby is to watch college football games on TV and think about how his own team can use those plays. "I'm always watching other teams, and I try to guess what they'll do next," he said. respected coaches in the area quietly closed out a successful career on Saturday when Oakcrest beat Pemberton, 31-21, in a Group 3 consolation game. Pemberton coach Bill McDowell announced before this season that this would be his 29th and last year guiding the Hornets. Pemberton finished 3-7 this year, but McDowell was 146-118-8 in his career and guided the Hornets to the 1977 South Jersey Group 4 tide. In victory or defeat, McDowell ran his program with class, and he will be missed in the coaching fraternity. Extra points.

Dave King of Holy Cross owns the South Jersey record of 111 conversion kicks. The previous record of 101 was like a natural thing for Trout, 15, who has looked to his fa-" ther for inspiration, motivation and instruction. "I remember watching tapes of him playing in the USFL and thinking that's what I want to do," said Trout, who uses a soccer-style kick on which his stride is long and low to the ground. Trout learned to kick, he said, at age 6. He began to kick in games in a Pop Warner league when the family lived in Arizona until two years ago.

At the time, no one on the team could get the ball through the uprights. At age 11, he was easily hitting 40-yard field goals. And when the snap is accurate, he can nail it from 55 yards without problems. The family moved to Washington Township two years ago, and Trout has been involved in the local football system ever since.
