There were 45,700 on hand at Mississippi Memorial Stadium, nearly reaching capacity, to see the Maroons make their bid against the perfect-record Tide. But outside of a 65-yard scoring drive the first time the Maroons had possession, capped by a 7-yard touchdown thrust by Price (Buddy) Hodges, what they saw mostly was the Alabama "meat grinder" in action.

To gamble for the victory or play for the tie. That was the question. The decision was made and it was Ezell, the man of hour, tossing to Moreau who and James Carroll's rather weak punt went only 27 yards to the Bama 41.

SECOND QUARTER State was helped out at the start of its drive when a 15-yard penalty against 'Bama for grab By WAYNE THOMPSON Clarion-Ledger Sports Editor BATON ROUGE It was Heartbreak Hollow for the Ole Miss Rebels down here in Tiger Stadium Saturday night as the LSU Bengals nosed out the Mississippians 11 to 10 in a sensational ball game before 65,000. Ole Miss scored in the first quarter on a march climaxed by Jim Weatherly's three-yard plunge, and added a field goal by Billy Carl Irwin in the final period, a 28-yarder. LSU scored its final goal first, a 33-yarder by Doug Moreau in the initial period. The Tigers then scored in the fourth period after covering on Ole Miss fumble, and successfully executed a pass for a two-point converion. Tom Luke of Ole Miss almost knocked down thetwo-point pass but Moreau made a falling catch of the ball from Billy Ezell of Greenville, Miss.

Ezell had passed to Masters for the touchdown. The Rebs, who went down to their third defeat in seven starts, held that 10-3 lead until that Halloween jinx struck again in the form of Ezell's aerial artistry and Baton Rouge will jump tonight. It was a sellout and a tremendous ball game, from either side of the fence, with that sleeping giant Ole Miss awakert ing and answering a lot of cr1l les before the Tigers found tliS range to keep their unbeaten1 record intact five wins against a single tie. LATE DRAMA All the drama of the game Southern Mississippi opened the fourth period as if it were senior signal-caller's first col finally going to score. Southern recovered a Bill Campbell bumble on its own 46 with 13:34 to go.

Purvis was brought back in edge statistically, leading 20-12 in first downs, 149-133 in rushing yardage and most importantly, lege touchdown. Pritchett try for two points failed and the Seminoles led 12-0. The score at the end of the first quarter was FSU 12, Southern Mississippi, 0. SECOND PERIOD After seven minutes and two seconds of the second quarter, by Loach Pie Vann to get the team rolling. Beginning with the third down, Purvis connected on two passes and the team was on FSU's 23.

He hit Bill Gorney for 10 yards, and on third and 10, the roll-out quarterback threw to in the thick of the SEC title picture as well as being a hot bowl prospect. For Ole Miss, which gained in stature while losing on the boards, it was the third loss as compared to three wins and a tie and virtually eliminated Johnny Reb from the post season picture. Not since 1956 has Ole Miss lost three that year it won seven and must win the rest to finish with a 6-3-1 record, identical to its 1951 mark. That covers a lot of territory and lot of wins. The statistics were close, as was the game.

LSU led 14 to 12 in first downs and gained 119 yards afoot as compared to 151 for the Rebels. Weatherly did all the Reb passing, while Kinard caught one for 40, Dave Wells two for 29, Dennis two for 14 and Allen Brown one for 11. For the Tigers, Don Schwab was the top ground gun with 45 yards in nine carries; Joe LaBruzzo had 21 in 12; Larry Fambrough 18 in three; and Screen 15 in six before leaving in the second period.

He did complete nine of 10 passes for 98 yards before departing while Ezell completed only four of 14 with two intercepted. Moreau caught six for 74, LaBruzzo five for 50, Gawain DeBetta one for 19 and Masters one for 19 and six points. Frankie Lambert was again the Rebs' ace, getting them out of several holes with spectacular kicking. He averaged 47.4 yards on five kicks, including one for 63 yards, while Gerald Brown averaged only 33.6 on seven but had two to go into the end zone to cost him statistically. FIRST QUARTER Electricity was in the air at the kickoff and the Tigers used that charge to generate an early threat that moved all the way from the Tiger 29 to the Ole Miss 17 in just eight plays, including five passes from Screen to Moreau (2) and Labruzzo (3) for a first down at that point.

The Rebs got tough to force a pair of losses and Moreau's field goal from the 23 was perfect, giving the Tigers a 3-0 lead with 8:41 left in the quarter. It went into the books as a 33-yarder. Back came the Rebs on their first offensive opportunity, moving 68 yards in just nine plays to take the lead with the big play a 40 yard pass from Weatherly to Kinard down to the five where Ezelle and Graves made a save. Dennis got two before Weatherly turned right end for the score. Irwin's kick made it 7-3, Rebs, with 4:36 left.

Ole Miss held after the kick-off, despite a 19-yard pass com New York Jets Pound Boston pea into Forney hands for a 13 yard gain. One play later, Purvis was intercepted by Win Bailey and Southern's last effort came to 3 cloSG With 9:52 left, the Seminoles had the ball three more times to the Southerner's two. Both teams tried desperately to score, even though FSU had its second team playing. Southern finally stopped FSU, but it was 34 points too late. bing a face mask kept the Maroons in possession at a time when they were punting.

Cook followed up that break with a 12-yard pass to Harland Reed. Then a 15-yard penalty against State temporarily set back the Maroons, but Cook came right back with a 20-yard pass to Hodges and Granger in turn blasted for six yards and a first down on the Tide 16. A penalty to the 10 against Alabama, followed by Granger's slant with a pitchout to the Tide 6, seemed to set State up for a sure touchdown. But after Bland picked up two, a chop through the middle saw Cook's handoff fumbled with Guard Jim Simmons recovering for Alabama on the Tide 3. Punts were exchanged before the Tide began rolling again on the passing of Sloan, who targeted Ray particularly in a drive to the State 11.
