But there's one type of nobody seems to give credit for anything but "easy credit This stepchild of the Steinway, this down from By PHYLLIS BATTELLE This stepchild of the Steinway, this down from Chickering, this maggot of the Mason Hamlin set is the spinet. I have a spinet, newly acquired. It may not be distinetive other spinets, from its string span to its payment plan, but nobody can tell me it hasn't got a personality, or a soul either, for that matter, although it's hard to spot a soul at her age. Murders "Silent Night" This spinet does not play particularly well.

She becomes quite discordant on tunes like "Silent Night," is quite careless of counterpoint on LatinAmerican things and is probably humbler than most in the presence of Bach. But she's loyal. Like a good snarling Doberman, if she acts bad for her mistress, she's that much worse for anybody elsepositively brutal at the hands of strangers. For some reason, there's a pair of keys in prominent position (the and C-sharp smack in the middle of the keyboard) that stick when you play them slow and easy. You tap those keys staccato and you're dead.

They linger, haunting and dissonant, through many bars of music. And they do it so eerily a guest "artist" can't quite figure why things didn't come off. Not after a few martinis anyway. "Well." says, the guest "ar. tist," rising, certainly need brushing up or something, don't Everyone happily agrees.

Flats and Sharps There's another loyal note on the spinet: the A below high C. It's flat. The G-sharp below it is, on the other hand, sharp. You can hit the G-sharp and get a pretty good which is a thing you know when you own a flat-A'd spinet, but guest "artists" don't figure that one either. The real kickeroo personality of my spinet, however, nestles itself like a loyal smirk in the soft pedal.

The soft pedal will push down for anybody, understand, but nobody thinks to push it down but me. The owner is the only one who realizes that without the soft pedal, this spinet has the shrillest, live five-and-10 honk in New York. (She notified me of this dif. ference in tone the first night I had her and played into the soft part of the morning when it's either pianissimo or the police.) Like they say, a grand piano has a soul and an upright a personality. But in a spinet, bless 'em, you get more loyalty and charm than you have any right to expect from a musical Frankenstein with strings attached! It's fine to devote great deal of thought and effort to becoming a good housekeeper.

But it is just as important to keep up the interests and nourish the talents that were a part of your personality when you first met your husband, whether that means keeping up with your piano playing or your interest in sports, or whatever. It's important to give the children all of the love and attention they need. But remember. your husband still needs your attention and interest and sympathy, too, It's fine to be economical and a good manager. But not to the extent that you think only in terms of being practical when you shop for your own clothes.

No how long he has married, a man still wants his wife to look as pretty as possible. It's good to spend quiet evenings at home. But don't drop all the forms of recreation two of you used to share. Shared enthusiasms helped to make you fall in love, so why not count on them to help keep that love? Your husband's career was fascinating to you once. Then don't run the risk of getting to regard his business as being more or less of a nuisance to you.

Stop and remember once in a while about the things you and your husband used to enjoy doing together. If you've given up any of those interests, be sure they have been replaced by others, equally companionable. And try to remember the kind of compliments your husband used to pay you. It's important to keep on rating the same kind. It's wonderful to have him praise your cooking.

But not if you've partaken of it so heavily yourself that he can no longer praise your figure. Wall Lamps Are Safest For Children's Rooms New York, Sept. 25 (INS) A lighting authority, lamp designer, Yasha Heifetz, thinks mothers could save themselves a lot of grief if they followed one lighting rule for children's playrooms. Heifetz says the rule is to use only lamps that can be attached to the wall, out of the way of groping little fingers. He has designed some new lamps that illustrate his point, a series of black steel pin up lamps with white fiberglass shades.

The steel is twisted into figures for decoration. a kitten, a deer, a girl jumping rope and a boy with a hoop. Leaves Hazard To Drivers By CAROL LANE When you are out enjoying drives through the gorgeous fall foliage next month, watch out for wet leaves matted on the roads. Leaves can be as slippery as banana peels. Worse, in fact, because there are more of them and their hazard is unanticipated. When you run into a leaflittered stretch of road: 1. Drive slowly.

2. Avoid applying brakes suddenly. Light gradual pressure on the brake pedal is safer. 3. If you feel yourself skidding, turn the front wheels the direction of the skid and do not apply brakes until the straightens out.
