November 13. 1960 Dennis Tied BAKER'S DOZEN By LEE BAKER DAILY NEWS SPORTS EDITOR CARL WALTERS SHA YIN'S Iowa Drills Ohio State In TV Tilt By RON SPEER Associated Press Sports Writer IOWA CITY, Iowa (Apy-Goug-ing chunks of yardage in a furious running attack, Iowa shot back into the Big Ten lead and contention for the national football title with a 35-12 conquest of Ohio WALKER ADDRESSES TD CLUB ON STATE NIGHT Mississippi State night will be featured at the regular weekly meeting of the Jackson Touchdown Club Monday at Hotel Heidelberg. Wade Walker, Athletic Director and head football coach of the Maroons, will be the featured speaker. He has addressed the local TD group on a number of occasions.

,4 Walker's remarks should be of interest not only to Mississippi State followers but to all football enthusiasts as well. The Maroons play one of the toughest schedules in the country and their 1960 slate was judged toughest in the SEC. Rambunctious Rams Tame Tigers To Wrap Up South Sector Title JACKSON PROVINE'S rambunctious Rams wrapped up the championship of the South Division of the Big Eight Conference with a 26-0 shutout of the McComb Tigers Friday night, winning the right to meet the Yazoo City Indians, North kingpins, in the December 2 playoff for the overall conference crown. i Rutter's dedicat- Navy Wilis 41 To 6 On Bellino's Power The Cavaliers' best previous ef Mississippi Teams Of special interest to Mississippi sports followers of col-, legiate basketball each season is the Southeastern Conference race. Since Mississippi State moved up from the depths upon the sturdy shoulders of Bailey Howell to the 1959 championship, enthusiasm for following the conference cage doings got its greatest shot in the arm.

And the rise by Ole Miss from a :59 basement finish to fourth place in '60 added, to the regard with which folks in the Magnolia State could consider Southestern play. No longer docs the SEC Kentucky Just Of course. Kentucky will be among the favorites to win this season, just as it always is, but note that "among." The 'Cats are Just one of at least three who could gather the big gold trophy symbolic of champon-ship status. Quite possibly, they'll not even be the big choice by the time conference play begins in January. They were third last time out behind Auburn and Georgia Tech, a pair which will be back battling for the lead again.

But even after conceding that Auburn, Tech and Kentucky Gain Lustre winter belong in the University of Kentucky trophy case, under lock with the key in Baron Adolph Rupp's pocket. As a matter of precise fact, Kain-tuck has been sturggling back in the pack with the also-rans for two straight seasons. That certainly is noteworthy. It also Is precedent setting. Never before in the previous 28 years of Southeastern Conference basketball had such a thing happened.

The Wildcats didn't win the championship EVERY season but until the 1959-60 dry spell, they never were off the throne for over a year at a time. One In A Croud shape up as the Big Three once more, there are several others to be considered very much in the running. Some analysts would stack Mississippi State in such a category, even though the Maroons will be tinged heavily with green. Chances of Vanderbilt and i 1 Tennessee could be excellent. Dark horses are getting better rides these days in the SEC pounding up to the top under ambitious young coaches who glory in making their mark at Uncle Adolph's expense.

Pushing hard for a second straight title will be Auburn where "Snow White" has five of those "Seven Dwarfs" back who served so nobly a season back. Major loss Is Henry Hart but with big sophs coming in, the "Dwarf" label may longer apply. Tech, too, returns with plenty, particularly top scorer-in-the circuit Roger Kaiser. While Dave Denton will be missed, the experience gained by advancing to the NCAA district tourney could make the 'Jackets tough. Be Reckoned With Eaves didn't get to lead his little fellers (no starter over 6-3) to the NCAA playoff because of Auburn's probation over football recruiting and the Tigers still aren't off that hook.

But the inspiration from the role of outcasts can be formidable. And Tech well, it got to the playoff on a pass and John (Whack) Hyder has pride enough to prefer going as a champion, not a runner-up. He'll point his Yellowjackets in that direction from the outset. The others? Well, even the Auburn Minus Hart, But Still Tough ed squad advanced its season record to eight victories against no defeats and no ties and maintained its brilliant defensive record which shows no points scored by the combined opposition. The Rams have now piled up 202 points to none in eight contests.

McComb made some scoring 1 threats once reaching Pro-vine's four-yard line but when the blue chips were on the line the Rams dug in, refused to yield and turned back the invaders. So the Rams who were picked to finish EIGHTH in the South Division in the preseason poll of coaches conducted by the Jackson Daily News have confounded the "experts" and accomplished one of the most outstanding feats in Big Eight Conference history. Laurel, Gulfport, Biloxi, McComb, Pascagoula, Hatties-burg and Natchez were all picked to finish ahead of Pro-vine in the South standings, and they will all finish behind the West Side Sheep. The Rams' have closed out their division slate with a per The 'Silly Season9 THE "SILLY which imbecilic under-graduates hang football coaches in effigy is now at hand. A life-sized effigy of Coach Art Guepe of Vanderbilt was hung from a power line in Nashville Thursday, indicating that backers of the Commodores are unhappy over the Vanderbilt team's record this season, which was 2-5 heading into Saturday's game with William and Mary.

(The record is probably 3-5, now). Actually, Guepe is one of the finest coaches in the SEC, or the nation, for that matter. For the past five seasons, Vanderbilt has a 26-16-7 record, never falling below .500, and its 1955 squad (7-3-0) beat Auburn 25-13 in the Gator Bowl. The simple truth is that Vanderbilt does not have "the hosses" this season and was picked to finish in the SEC cellar, and no coach we repeat, NO coach can make a State Saturday. Junior halfback Larry Ferguson's flashy 91-yard scoring dash down the sidelines and sophomore fullback Joe William's '49 yard touchdown burst highlighted the Hawkeyes' rationally televised victory.

The stunning triumph assured the Hawks at least a tie for the Big Ten crown with a 5-1 record as previously unbeaten Minnesota was upset 23-14 by Purdue Saturday. The Gophers must beat Wisconsin next week to share the championship. The Hawkeyes fifth ranked in the latest Associated Press poll-displayed their best attack of the season in turning back powerful Ohio State, which had lost only one game and was ranked third this week. Iowa was performing in its last home game under Coach Forest Evashevski. And the players shot the works, building a 28-6 halftime lead and using a stubborn defense to turn back the Buckeyes' secqnd-half bids.

Williams also scored on a two-yard plunge in the route. Quarterback Wilburn Hollins added a 12-yard touchdown and his understudy, Matt Szykowny scored on a sneak to thrill the Dad's Day crowd. Ohio State quarterback Tom Matte who had a brilliant day for the Buckeyes but alone couldn't turn the tide and fullback Bob Ferguson scored Ohio State's touchdowns. Ami) Pitt Tie 5 111 7-7 By JOE BRADIS Associated Press Sports Writer PITTSBURGH (AP) Army's Tom Blanda missed a 23-yard field goal attempt with 35 seconds left and the Cadets had to settle for a 7-7 tie Saturday with bowl-minded Pitt. Blanda, who kicked the deciding field goal in Army's 9-6 upset of Syracuse last week, almost did it again.

The ball hit the crossbar and bounced under it into the end zone. Just a few seconds before, Linesman William Douglas signaled that Army had caught Pitt's Johnny Yaccino in the Panthers' end zone for a safefv. Howell Gets 18 As Pistons Win DETROIT (AP) The Detroit Pistons snapped a four-game losing streak by defeating the Cincinnati Royals 11C-112 in a nationally televised National Basketball Association game Saturday. It marked the 16lh straight time that the Pistons have downed the Royals in Detroit during the last four seasons. After kicking away a 10-point lead in the early minutes, the Pistons spurted to go ahead for keeps on a pair of free throws by Bailey Howell in the final 30 seconds of the third period.

(AP) Joe Bellino, scoring four touchdowns in one of his finest individual performances as a Navy player, powered the Middies to a 41-6 football victory over Virginia Saturday and set two new Naval Academy records. One of the runs by the Winchester, rocket was for 90 yards, his longest run as a varsity player. His other touchdowns came on an eight-yard pass play, a dash of 39 yards, and a plunge of one yard which took him four cracks at a stubborn Virginia line to make.

Bellino gained 198 yards in 17 carries against the hapless Cavaliers, who lost their 25th straight game, giving him a new season rushing record for an Academy player. His 749 yards for nine gmes wiped out a previous mark of 691 yards set by Fred Franco in 1952. His 24 points were the highest scored in a single game by a Navy player and were added to the 80 he already had scored this season for a modern Navy record. Virginia's score came on a 92-yard pass play from Stanford Fischer, third team quarterback, to Joe Kehoe five minutes before the game ended with Navy reserves playing. East Central JC Rolls By Holmes FOREST MV-East Central and Holmes, matched about evenly, battled to a 45-22 football victory for East Central at neutral For est Saturday night.

East Central was in command throughout the Mississippi Junior College Conference game. Scoring for East Central were: Bill Richardson; John Alford, two on short runs; Billy Baucum, on runs of 5, 10, and 20 yards each; and Butch Smith on a 60-yard run. Alford kicked one PAT and Baucum ran another. Scoring for Holmes were Wayne Phillips; Bobby Grantham; and Jimmy Whitmore, on a 70-yard run. Felix Herring ran one conversion.

Rangers Crush Itawamba Club SENATOBIA (AP) Powerful Northwest used a hard-hitting offense to score a 27-12 football victory over Itawamba in a Mississippi Junior College football game Saturday night. Highlight of the game was Halfback Bryce McCullough's pass interception and 96-yard run for a Northwest touchdown in the second quarter. Fullback Butch Pomeroy set up one touchdown with a 50-yard run and then scored from the 10. He kicked one point after touchdown and ran another conversion. Halfback Arthur Kuntzman scored one touchdown and Guard Paul Stroud picked up an Itawamba punt that Pomeroy had blocked and ran 18 yards for the score.

Itawamba's Fw touchdowns were made by Quarterback Doyle Hill from the 11 and by Billy Riley on a pass play from Hill that covered 27 yards. All is not rosy at Kentucky. Gone are Center Don Mills and Guards Sid Cohen and Bennie Coffman, a handy threesome. Two-time All SEC Bill Lick-ert returns plus the usual pla-' toon of carryover lettermen (Adolph must love to have company upon the bench). Yet the recruiting of junior college stars Vincent Del Negro from Northeast Mississippi and Doug Pendygraft from Lind-sey Wilson (Ky.) would point to some question on those left from last year and the quality of the upcoming sophs.

Yellow jackets To Without getting beyond those three favorites, there is room for all sorts of competition. The title scramble will be wide open with more than just championship ambitions to carry them. Rupp already has waited two seasons in vain to achieve the milestone of a 20th Southeastern championship. He'll run the 'Cats under forced draft, trying to keep from being rebuffed a third time in succession. son scoring for Louisville.

Louisville scored their final TD with eight seconds to go and missed out on a tie game when Jimmy Davis' try for point was blocked. Mike Phillips was the star of the Eupora team against Acker-man, crossing three times and adding two extra points. Other points were made by David Hall and Bill Fortner. Ackerman's only threat stalled on the eight. Newton's victory was marked with long runs for both sides.

Newton's Buddy Lindsey went 90 yards for one score and Union's Henry Brown returned a kickoff 85 yards for their only TD. Other crosses were made by Sam Wear. Melvin Tane, Larry Gressett, W. Emmons and Van Lucas. Maris Definitely 'Most Valuable9 fect 7-0 record.

In their two remaining games they meet Murrah's Mustangs 6-2-1) at Newell Field next Friday night in a game that will decide the Jackson city title, and the Vicksburg Greenies 2-7) at Vicksburg on Thanksgiving Day. The Provine Murrah game should be the hardest-fought and best high school grid battle staged here in many years, and will draw a capacity crowd. Jim Merritt's Mustangs edged the tough Meridian Wildcats at Meridian Friday night, 7-6 the first Murrah win over Meridian in history as the Rams tamed the Pike Tigers. And Jackson Central's Tigers came through, too, with a 13-7 win over Columbus, to make it three wins in one night for Capital City Big i clubs. Yes, sir! Jackson high school football is looking up and mow ing up, and regardless of the outcome of remaining games both the Rams and Mustangs have already compiled their best records in the history of their schools.

EUGENE LAMBERT, athletic director of Memphis State University, said a couple of days ago that the Memphis State vs. Ole Miss football series apparently has ended. Ole Miss offered MSU a one-year contract for 1961, with the game to be played at Oxford, but Lambert declined, asking for a two-year, home-and-home contract. Incidentally, all indications point to the Ole Miss vs, Arkansas series ending after next year's September 23 contest, which will probably be played in the new Mississippi Memorial Stadium here. JOE BELLINO, Navy halfback, is still the top candidate for the Heisman Trophy, awarded to the nation's top footballer, but Jake Gibbs of Ole Miss has an outside chance to win it and we again urge all Mississippi sports writers and-sportscasters to make certain to vote for the fine all-round quarterback of the Rebels.
