Tharsday, Aognst 4, 19ftft Che ClarfomLf Bgct Two Highways Renumbered PASCAGOULA Two portions of highway between here and Luccdale have been renumbered Superb, Relaxing COMFORT Highway f3. An approximate 45 mile stretch from the same point to Lucedale, formerly Highway 63, becomes Highway 613. The new highway, known locally as Lampton Road, was first numbered 613. Highway officials said the renumbering was done so as to route more through traffic over the better, and slightly shorter, route. The squire, 80, climbs on old Huldah "a real Democrat, mile" and campaigns from one end of his district to another, seeking a seventh six-year-term as magistrate of Giles county, in Middle Tennessee. His total campaign costs for the $40-a-year job: $2.75 for 400 campaign cards. He's handing one to Mrs. James Stevenson. Clarion-Ledger AP Wirephoto.

by the state, each assuming the designation formerly applied to the other. Under the redesignatkm, about 40 miles of new road from north of Escatawpa to Lucedale in George County will be known as Democrat or Republican but it will make no difference and we will have no love from either side, if indeed we will have anyway. But, whatever, get out in the open and tell the people what is to be expected at the re-called convention. Else, how in the heck is the rank and file going to decide who or what it favors. Secrecy in politics is suicide.

Silence breeds suspicion in the case of big and little politicians alike. SPECIAL SESSION Gov. Barnett is seriously thinking about a special session of the legislature to correct the discrepancy in the county road and bridge bill. As you know, the 1960 legislature deleted the full faith and credit of the state from such bonds, and now, there is danger that no county roads may be constructed in the current bien-ium. We suggest that the governor could have a gentlemen's agreement with the legislature to handle the matter quickly so that the cost of the session would not be great.

Of course, local and private and appropriations bills have free sledding in any session, but, there should be little need for such so soon after a general term of the law-makers. One suggestion by the Civil Defense Council: With millions of dollars worth of war surplus floating around to be had for the asking, the legislature could appropriate a little fund to finance operations of that department. One free helicopter for the highway patrol would be worth more than a two-year operational cost for the Civil Defense step-child. AFFAIRS OF STATE By CHARLES M. Ik- 'tfiiK' is a committee at work getting up a list of unpledged electors to be presented for the convention's approval. There is also spadework being done to find out how the present list of nominees for elector individually feel. whether they want to remain Democratic nominees or switch to the unpledged list.

Little doubt exists but that there will be a list of unpledged a list of Democratic electors and a list of Republican electors on the November ballot. The voters probably will havt a choice. If the unpledged electors are approved and do go on the ballot, and win, they will have the authority to bargain, if the national election becomes so close that their votes can swing to one side or the other for a victory. Ross Barnett is going to come out swinging for unpledged electors, and, he is hoping that enough support will be on hand to give him that wish. If the Democrats are as fed up with the national platform and candidates as they claim, we think he will achieve his aim. But, there are those who still believe that it is political suicide 'to bolt the national party in any way. You are going to hear from them. There is no doubt but that there will be discord, and we might as well come out in the open and talk about it.

If the governor is to win his point, nee, that unpledged electors may be able to bargain for some advantage which we certainly don't have now, something has to be done, even if it's drastic.
