Los Angeles Stars' guard Mack Calvin tallied six of his team's 10 points in an overtime period Saturday as the Stars beat Indiana, 117-113, to force the American Basketball Association championship playoffs to at least six games. Indiana holds a 3-2 advan-, tage in the series which moves to the Los Angeles Sports Arena for a game Monday night. Calvin finished the nation ally televised game with 33 points, but it was the scoring in the five-minute extra period which did the Pacers in. He hit a jumper to put the Stars out front for good, 111-110, then added another quick bucket for a 113-110 edge. Calvin free throws for the final margin in the closing seconds.

Roger Brown of Indiana took game high scoring honors, however, with 39 points. ins jxr.FI.ES INDIANA Stone 8 J- 5 22 Brown 14 -12 39 Wrrn 0 3- 3 3 Netoliky 7 7- 7 21 Raymnd 9 5- 6 23 Darnels 10 0- 0 20 Jacksn 7 2-3 17 Lewis ft- 0 Calvin 12 9-12 33 Keller 4 J-3 12 Washgtn 0 0- 0 0 Barnhill 0 1- i 1 Andersn 0 0-0 0 Becker 0 0-0 0 Wise 7 1-2 Thacker 0 1-1 1 Peterson 2 0-1 4 Totals 41 27-35 113 Workmn 0 0-00 Tntili 45 117 Los Aneeles 27 22 29 2 10-117 Indiana 27 30 27 23 6-113 Three point goals Los Angeles. Two drivers were hurt, but escaped serious in jury Saturday when seven open cockpit, Formula Ford racing cars crashed, spun and overturned at 125 MPH in a conglomeration of twisted metal and flames at the Char lotte Motor Speedway.

Hospitalized in satisfactory condition were Vic Mathews of Mechanicsville, and John Kinney of Bridgeport, Conn. Mathews has head injuries and an injured ankle. Kinney had burns on his right side and a leg injury. Four other drivers were treated at the speedway in firmary. The chain reaction wreck on the 14th lap of 45-mile fying race for the Pied mont 100 started with two cars locking wheels.

Then, with a screech of tires and gasps from the crowd of about 6000, the 103-pound, 850-horse-power cars were scattered like toys on the steeply-bank ed asphalt track. The car of Frank Marrs of Plantation, started flip- ping oven Mathews' racer shot down the speedway side ways, rolled over at least six times as parts flew from his car and it all but disintegrated. His body hung limply in the cockpit after it. came to a stop. At the same time, Sfpurv geon May of Jackson, shot on top of a car driven by Jim Clarke of Garden City, Mich.

The front end of May's car hid Clarke from view as the two shot down the speedway. After coming to a stop, the two cars broke into flames. May quickly jumped from the racer on top and fled. About a minute later, with fire engines still not at the scene and flames and white smoke pouring from the two cars, Clarke emerged from the bottom car. He stumbled into the arms of other driv ers with his left shoe in flames.

The other drivers involved were Robert Garner of Wilmington, and Terry Baxter of Greerabelt, Md. Jim Jenkins of Yonkers, N. edged out Nick Dunn of Croton-On-Hudson, N. Y. in the shortened 100-mile final.

Neither was involved in the qualifying wreck. Benvenuti KOs Bethea in 8th Continued from 1st Sports Page by backing quickly away and using a flicking left jab. Bethea, who has been plagued by cuts in bis career, was cut above the right eye in the fourth round and Benvenuti kept working on the cut until he landed the left and right that ended the first world title bout ever held in an Iron Curtain country. Benvenuti weighed the middleweight limit of 160 pounds as did Bethea who suffered his sixth loss against 10 victories and a draw. Benvenuti, 32, won the title from Griffith in 1967, lost it back to Griffith the same year and then regained it in 1968.

This was his fourth successful defense since regaining the crown. Griffith was in Bethea's corner Saturday night The bout was held in an outdoor area especially constructed for it in this northern Yugoslavia town just across the border from Italy. It was beamed to the United State via satellite and was telecast on ABC's Wide World Sports. Benvenuti wai guaranteed $100,000. Bethea'i cut was $17,500.

VillanovaWins 4-Mile Relay Continued from 1st Sports Page fornia State Junior college championships. UPSET IN JAVELIN Bill Schmidt of North Texas State scored an upset when he beat American record-holder Mark Murro of Arizona State in the javelin with a meet record throw of 280-7. Murro, who has a career best of 300 feet even, did only 270-3 while Larry Stuart of the Southern California Striders was third at 2648. Schmidt's throw beat the old meet mark of 270-11 set by Jorma Lin- nunen of Finland last year. In other events of note, George Freen beat perennial California relays champ Harold Connolly, 222-8 to 210-7 in the hammer throw; Jay Silvester defeated John Van R'nnen in the discus, 211-9 to 204-10, and Bruce Adair of the Army won the mile walk in 6:38.2.

Olympians John Carlos, Willie Davenport and Lee Evans had to go all out to win their specialties. Carlos picked up a step in the final 10 meters to beat Ben Vaughan of the Army in the 10-meter dash, winning in the meet record equalling time of 10 seconds flat. However, the mark did not count since Carlos had an excessive (6.9) aiding wind. Vaughan was in 10.2 Davenport fought off Paul Gibson of UTEP in the 120 high hurdles as he won in a wind-aided 13.4 seconds. Gibson was caught in 13.5 and Tom Hill of Arkansas State was third in 13.6.

PICKS FINE SPOT Evans, the Olympic 400-meter gold medalist, has been competing in the 440 intermediate hurdles this spring and he picked a fine spot to win for the first time, beating Ralph Mann of BYU by an eyelash. Both were timed in a fast 51.2. Mann has an American record 49.4 to his credit this year. That's only one-tenth off the world mark. Chi Cheng of Formosa and the Los Angeles Track Club won a special ladies 100-yard dash going away in a wind aided ll.l.

Wyomia Tyus holds, the world record at 11 flat. The amazing Misi Cherg became a double winner a half hour later when she took the 440-yard dash, a new event in the California Relays, in 53.4, only a second off the world record held by Judy Pollack of Australia. Continued from 1st Sports Page best speed at 166.397 on his four-lap, 10-mile trial run. Brabham and Bartlett became the first and probably only foreign drivers to qualify for next Saturday's holiday grind.

Bentley Warren of West Gloucester, qualified at 164.805 but his machine was in the lineup for only a short time. It was bumped by Simon. Grant bumped the racer qualified last week by Steve Krisiloff of Parsippany, N. J. Brabham eliminated Jim Mc- Elreath, Arlington, a former speedway Rookie of the Year and Vukovich bumped Tony Adamowicz, Torrance, Calif.

Spartans Bow In Opener, 4-3 By GEORGE BUTZ Of The Inquirer Staff Boston's Astros rallied in the second half to mar the Spartans' home opener Saturday night, 4-3, in an American Soccer League game at Temple Stadium. The Philadelphians started off well with their smooth passing in the first half, scoring after two minutes of play. Carlos Giacovino scored the first of his two goals on a nice assist pass from Juan Paletta. PALETTA TALLIES Before the Spartans produced the second goal Windsor DeLane and Joe Elwell, West Chester State star, made some fine opening shots but the Spartans lacked a finishing punch. At 38 minutes Paletta rushed in on an angle and completed a solo score.

Boston was slow in starting but just before intermission smoothed out its passing attack. In the second half Boston lost little time in scoring its first goal. Fernando Car-valhe found the net aa he broke through two Spartan backs. BREWSTER NETS PAIR Ben Brewster, Brown University all-American, scored the first of his two goals after five minutes. He made a nice run and finished with a 10- yard drive into the net.

Meanwhile, goalie Walt Tar-nowsky of the Spartans saved Carvalhe's 20-yard drive by diving into the water-logged Temple turf. Brewster's shot tied the score at 2-2. The revitalized Boston booters went ahead, 3-2, at 12 minutes, when the Spartan defense became clogged up. At 20 minutes, Brewster gave the Astros their fourth goal on a pass from Fernando Souza. 3.3. coll 788-5828 Philadelphia Technical Institute Director' M. Stanford Berk learned many years ago there's no "secret" to successful student recruitment. It's simply a matter of concentrating your. advertising budget around the one.

medium that guarantees to reach a. responsive and education-minded audience. And for Mt Berk, The Inquirer is a natural. "A recent audit revealed that our Inquirer advertising for recruitment' of students had a pro rata of less' cost than any other newspaper periodical or media of advertising. It is my belief that one could not have a better test than the last 30 years of daily and Sunday advertising in The Inquirer.

It has proven inexpensive and productive; end it has kept P.T.t. as a leader of the private technical schools in Philadelphia." P.T.I.'s enthusiasm for The Inquirer's responsiveness is shared by schools, colleges and camps of every possible description. And our 1969 advertising record proves this. Last year, we. published 81 more School Camp Advertising than our closest competitor in the Delaware Valley market.

The Inquirer's 30-year performance for P.T.I, is just another verified-, -tion-when a newspaper gets resuks, the result is advertising leader-s ship.
