Tropical storm Dawn, instead of fading away quietly, confounded the forecasters by regaining strength Sunday in the Atlantic between the North Carolina coast and Bermuda. The National Hurricane Center had predicted at noon Sunday that Dawn would be absorbed by a cold front moving down from the northwest and lose its tropical characteristics. However, the hurricane center said reports from a reconnaissance plane during the afternoon indicated Dawn had regained some strength, with winds increasing from 40 mph to 55 mph and gusts up to 70 mph.

"It is not uncommon for a tropical cyclone to strengthen for a time when it is overtaken by a frontal zone," the hurricane center said.
