4 5 a THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER. SUNDAY MORNING, MAY 3. 1970 Tina Turner Scores Again New Discs Show Young Pianists Probing Liszt, Busoni Repertory As World's 'Sexiest' Singer cludes "Greensleeves" after Busoni found the tune and be-' lieved it Chinese and so suitable for his "Turandot." The disc also includes Liszt's "Reminiscences of "Don Giovanni' and 'Simon The pianist minimizes the difficulties of these showpieces and makes them seem less campy than has become the norm. D. W.

nothing left after Tina Turner is through with a song. Seeing is believing, they'll tell you. And a lot of people saw the Ike and Tina Turner review during the early stages of the past Rolling Stones tour. They came to see the Stones, but by the time Mick Jagger and Company arrived on stage, the crowd was already limp from the dynamic doings of Tina Turner. Unfortunately, by the time the tour hit Philadelphia the Turner Review was no longer on the billing.

Tina Turner backed up by the marvelously low-down guitar playiug of Ike, four chick singers called the Iket-tes and one of the heaviest blues bands you'll ever hear is a "visual" singer. She but emerges an appealing work. It lacks the impact of the earlier Richter recording which digs deeper. The Ginastera Sonata, one of the more pianistic contemporary pieces, gets a find sendoff in this version. Bean plays six Busoni Elegies and the Villa-Lobos "Rudepoema" on RCA's Vic-trola label (1379).

The Busoni works, deftly performed, are austere in content, however remarkably the line is colored and varied. The Villa-Lobos piece has great vitality and Bean makes a strong case for it. John Ogdon plays Busoni and Liszt in a Seraphim reissue (S60088). Ogdon's Busoni 'has considerable warmth but the selections are splashier the Fantasy on "Carmen," the Variations on a Chopin Etude and "Turandot's Boudoir," the piece that in moves with the music, to put it mildly. But since most of us can't have the Turner show live in our own living rooms, we have to settle for the next best thing such as the new Turner album on Liberty Records called "Come Together." EXCITING ALBUM Very rarely does a record generate the kind of excitement you find on the new LP, which, as usual, emphasizes the smoldering vocals of Tina Turner, with Ike and the other review members taking their customary roles as slick backdrops for the singer.

Okay, that's the kind of claim that's bound to run into opposition, since we're dealing with a quality that has something to do with individual taste. "A REMARKABLE MUSICAL HIT." LIFE MAG. TINA TURNER "Some kind of a woman" er albums good ones, too but none of them have really ever "made" it for reasons that are perplexing enough to send marketing specialists to the martini pitcher at regular intervals. One of the most probable guesses is that the black market has never totally accepted Ike and Tina because of a rock (or commercial) approach to black music, while the white record ket has tended to place them in a rhythm and blues (or soul) bracket. EARTHY ABANDON Maybe now, with music belatedly showing signs of complete integration, the time is right for Ike and Tina Turner. The basic flavoring of their music is strongly gospel-blues-rock, a neatly fitting combination of the three most exciting sounds in pop music.

But, in the end, it is the voice of Tina Turner that provides the ultimate wallop to this music, most of which has been written by Ike Turner, with help from the Stones on "Honky Tonk Woman" and the Beatles on "Get Together." Sometimes the emotion oozes out sensually on numbers such as "Doin' It," but usually Tina blasts out the way she feels with raw, earthy abandon brazenly announcing that she is some kind of woman and daring anyone to doubt it. The Tina Turner Cult has added at least one new member. JACK LLOYD iinos i My ran ALL EVENINGS at 7:30 P.M. ifm Vi Despite the impact of the Beethoven bicentennial, the recording industry is in the midst of a resurgence of interest in the high romantic repertory. Liszt, Bruckner, Busoni, Berlioz are leaders, but there is wide exploration of the mu-.

sic of the 19th century. Recent piano releases show how some of the young pianists are finding a cause in this repertory. MESSIAEN-LISZT DISC Jean-Rodolphe Kars, the 23-year-old Austrian, includes five Liszt pieces on his recital disc and offers three brilliantly colored Messiaen works on the obverse (London 6604). His Liszt selections include "St. Francis Walking on the the "Piece No.

2," "Nuages Gris," "La Lugubre Gondola No. 1" and "Wilde Jagd." His playing is richly colored and sonorous as well as technically well founded. The three middle pieces are prophetic in their tonal ambivalence: the music sounds much more recent than it is. The "St. Francis" music is played tumultuously.

The Messiaen music seems a logical development from the tone painting of Liszt. "La Merle Bleu" from the "Catalogue d'Oiseaux" involves a new concept of piano tone, clangorous, sometimes metallic, often like chimes. The subject is birdsong and landscape painting in tone. The other Messiaen works are from a large piece, "Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant Jesus." The composer continues to expand the instrument's tonal possibilities and Kars offers strong performance of this haunting material. SWEDISH MUSIC Staffan Scheja, a 20-year-old Swedish pianist, has made his recording debut with four romantic Swedish pieces new to records (RCA 3119).

The pianist shows a feeling for the long line and the flexible rubato which expands and contracts the romantics' phrasing. Most interesting of the pieces is Ture Rang-strom's "Legends from the Lake Malaren," a suite marked by deep intensity, some singing melodies and dark moods. emit accurate full sound. To get the most out of them, they have to be driven hard at power levels that raise distortion. The larger speakers and the large, well-engineered cabinets preserve the bass frequencies and push them into a room with less effort and less distortion.

Generally, the need to equalize should be seen as a symptom of a larger problem, one that requires some thought and critical listening. D. W. Stravinsky and Gershwin can be heard. It dates from 1942.

Stenhammar's "Fantasies" from 1896, and Lars-Erik Larsson's "Sonatine" from 1936 complete the disc, but sounding romantic in harmony and form despite disparities in age. Scheja sounds like a musician aware of subtleties of tone as well as of the sweeping flow of romantic music. David Bean, American pianist with a splashy technique and notable control, has released two discs of unhackneyed repertory, including a major Liszt piece. On his Westminster release (WST 17161) he plays the Fantasy on BACH and the Mephisto Waltz No. 3, Scriabin's Sonata No.

5, and Ginastera's Sonata. The Mephisto Waltz, for all his diligence, does not emerge with enough demonic force. The Fantasy, however, shows Bean as a man with a grasp of the sweeping style and the passion that infuses the music. The Scriabin Sonata is played with a directness that understates some of the ideas SAT. 10 A.M.

The equalizers work by flattening peaks in speaker response. Most speakers have characteristic peaks through their frequency range, but particularly in the bass. When these uneven points are removed, slightly more clarity is apparent in the 60-120 Hz. range. The problem, however, is that for most listeners, the room is not that much of a problem.

The average living room is not very large and the difference in the reflecting power of wall surfaces, the absorbing power of furniture and drapes is not radically different from one to another. A poor speaker will sound poor under any circumstance and no amount of after-the-fact equalization will make it an authentic and accurate speaker. The listener's ears are at once the most sensitive and the most deceptive measuring devices for distorotion in stereo reproduction. Ears become accustomed to a speaker's sound and will fail to detect shortcomings in it; the same ears will hear the false notes in another stereo set clearly. The listener who decides that equalization is the answer to problems he has at home has probably not gone far enough.

He probably means that he is listening to inferior speakers, and is being goaded, subliminally, by their failings in the bass frequencies. There is still a principle in speaker design which says that tiny speakers cannot Larry's Magic Productions Presents A MOTHER'S DAY TRIBUTE FRANK ZAPPA and the MOTHERS OF INVENTION Sweet Stavin Chain Sunday, May 10 Academy of Music 8 PM Tickets: S3.50 $4.50 $5.50 Sound Lights By Festival Group Util Orders: Academy of Music Box Office, Broad Locust Pa. 19102.
