More than 1,000 people turned out at a public auction in Bethalto Sunday and raised over $2,000 to help a Moro farmer who lost both legs in a corn picking accident on his farm. The people who bid on the auction items were all helping 31-year-old Moro farmer Don Kruse, who Nov. 5 lost his legs and part of his left hand when he was pulled into a corn picker at his farm. But Sunday was a clay to help, and as Thanksgiving draws closer, the people showed a genuine spirit of giving.

One woman told an auctioneer that she didn't really need anything, but she thought "Mr. Kruse could sure use some help right now so I'm going to buy something." All items, auctioned free by Homer llcnke and Gerald Scherff of the Auction Service, were donated' by AUCTIONEERS Homer Henlje, left and Gerald Scherff, right, owners of the S. H. Auction Service were busy all Sunday afternoon at Bethalto Village Hall where they auctioned ot'i $2,258 worth of items to benefit the Don Kruse Benefit Fund, a fund set up to aid the Moro farmer who lost both legs and part of his left hand in the early part of November. The auctioneers like everyone involved donated their services.

The sewing machine, which brought $8, was one of numerous antique household items donated by area residents for the Don Kruse benefit sale. residents of the area. Goats, calves, homemade bread and a used farm tractor were among the items people bid. The farm tractor brought just over $200 and the homemade bread went like the proverbial hotcakes as bidders rushed orward to get two or three oaves.
