Died Mr. Nixon's uncle, a retired Deaths Elsewhere Nicholas M. Schenck, 87, who rose from an errand boy's job to help create and head the biggest empire in the motion picture industry, in Miami Beach. Mr. Schenck helped found Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and for 28 years served as president of M-G-M and its par ent company, Loew's, Inc.

A retiring man, he rarely gave interviews or even appeared in public, and spent his last years as a virtual recluse. His habits were in stark con trast to those of his flamboyant brother, Joseph, a movie mogul in his own right and a friend and confidant of many top fig ures in the film industry, who died in 1961 at 83. While Joseph handled produc tion, eventually teaming with Darryl F. Zanuck to form what became 20th Century-Fox Film Nicholas tended toward financial management and dis tribution and worked quietly in the Loew's executive offices. David Leibowit, 65, inventor of Israel's first "secret weap on," the Davidka mortar that had more bark than bite, in Tel Aviv.

Mr. Leibowitz, an immigrant from Russia, hit upon the idea of a short-range heavy mortar in 1947 when the Arab-Israeli war of terrorism was in full swing. It was used during the 1948-9 Israeli war of independence, and many Israelis attribute their victory over the Jerusalem siege to the Davidka. Later it won wide public- ity through Leon Uris best- selling book and movie "Exo dus." The weapon made a tremen dous noise without causitg much real damage. Often wir ing it with amplifiers, Israeli troops were able to scare off ill-organized attacks by Arab soldiers.

Today the hip-high mortar mounted on three small wheels occupies a place of honor in a Jerusalem square. Mr. Leibowitz became active in Israel's fledging military in dustries in the 1940's and later was manager of a large agricultural concern. Died BROOKS On March 5. 19S9.
