The former Marian Baird. she School Goach, Rowing Official John C. Bratten, amateur rowing official, former school coach and member of the world Club crew, died Saturday at Presbyterian Hospital.

He was 61 and lived at 336 E. Meehan Mount Airy. An insurance salesman, Mr. Bratten was a member of the National Executive Committee of Amateur Oarsmen for 15 1 years and president of the Dadj Vail Rowing Association for 13 1 years. He began rowing at the Malta Boat Club, and when business took him to Washington, he joined the Potomac Boat Club and won the Southern Single Shell championship.

Returning to Philadelphia, he joined Penn AC. In addition to rowing on the world championship crew, he won many National and Canadian championships. LA SALLE COACH After his competitive years, Ine Decame interested in rowing and was successively president of Malta, steward of the Penn AC, vice commodore and commodore of the Schuylkill Navy. M. bile accident in Fairmount Park An autopsy disclosed that death was caused by a heart attack. He was 71. Mr. Miller, who retired from baseball with a lifetime batting average of .312, was injured while returning home from a baseball game between the Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates at Connie Mack Stadium Mr.

Miller spent 17 years in the American League playing with Washington, St. Louis, Bos ton and the old Philadelphia A's BECAME COACH After his retirement, Mr. Miller began coaching. In recent years he devoted much of his time to conducting baseball clinics for youngsters. The accident occurred at 11:15 P.

M. Mr. Miller was being driven by a friend, Joseph H. Greene, 69, of 5222 Rock Glen Wynnewood. Their auto was headed west on Chamounix dr.

Tim McCloud, 19, of 3207-K Mc-Michael one of four passengers in the Barksdale car, suffered a fractured right leg and rib injuries. RETURXS T0 PHILA Mr. Miller, a native of Vinton, Iowa, became a big league ball player in 1921 when he joined the Washington Senators. He came to the A's a year later in a trade and played in the outfield for Connie Mack until he was trad ed to the St. Louis Browns in 1926.

Another trade two years later brought Miller back to Philadelphia and he remained with the A's through 1934. He was then sent to the Boston Red Sox where he finished his major league career He began coaching in 1937 and was on the staff of the Detroit Tigers, the Red Sox and the Chicago White Sox before returning to Philadelphia in 1950 as a coach under Jimmy Dykes SCOUT FOR PHILA. He was released at the end of the 1953 season. He was later resigned as a scout and special player instructor for the Philadelphia team. Mr.

Burton P. Fowler, wife of the late headmaster of Germantown Friends School from 1941 to 1954 and a progressive education pioneer, died Satur- day at Chestnut Hill Hospital. She lived at 26 E. Springfield. ave.

Mrs. Fowler, the former Mer-tie Dense, was a graduate of Elmira College and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Germantown. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. C. David Curtiss, of Ithaca, N.

and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Monday at 3:30 P. M. at the First Presbyterian Church. Interment will be at Elmira, N.

Born in Philadelphia, he grad uated from the old Logan School, 19th and Reed and went to work for Philadelphia Electric Co. He then took a job with McCallister's. He was a Mason and a member of the Artisans. Surviving are his wife, the former Anna McCallister, daughter of the firm's founder; two sons, Richard present head of McCallister's, and Robert, and six grandchildren. E. T. Sfapleford, Inquirer Employe Edward T.
