Death Notices Obituaries Gus Hall; for years led U.S. Communist Party FROM INQUIRER WIRE SERVICES NEW YORK Gus Hall, 90, the American Communist Party boss who steadfastly stuck to his beliefs through years in prison and the collapse of communist regimes around the world, has died. He died Friday at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan of complications relating to diabetes, said Scott Marshall, a Communist Party official. The son of Finnish immigrants, Mr.

Hall was a union organizer who went on to head the Communist Party in the United States for more than four decades. He ran for president four times between 1972 and 1984, enjoying his best showing in 1976, when he was on the ballot in 28 states and won about 59,000 votes. His running mate in 1980 and 1984 was Angela Davis, the black activist and feminist. A communist activist since 1926, Mr. Hall never repudiated his ideas, even after the dis- Gus Hall Gus Hall solution of communist societies in Eastern Europe and the dismantling of the Soviet Union.

"Just as feudalism was an advance over slavery, and capitalism was the next step after feudalism, socialism is the next step after capitalism," he said in 1996. "The struggle between those who own the wealth and those whose labor produces the wealth is one flaw in capitalism that will lead to socialism." Mr. Hall was born Arvo Kusto Halberg in northern Minnesota. According to Minnesota Public Radio, his parents, like many Finnish immigrants there, were active socialists. He worked as a lumberjack, miner and ironworker when he was young, joining the Communist Parin 1927.

He became a labor organizer in the 1930s, moving to Youngstown, Ohio, in 1934 and running for mayor on the Communist Party ticket a year later. He was actively involved in a significant, and ugly, strike in 1937 against the Republic Steel Corp. Members of the National Guard set up machine-gun posts to oversee the Republic mill, and small planes were used to supply strikebreakers and food for the plant. Strikers, hiding in nearby fields, used rifles to shoot down two of the planes. The strike ended with a United Steelworkers of America local winning recognition from the steel firm.

He enlisted in the Navy during World War II and served as a machinist mate in a machine shop in Guam. In 1949, he was convicted, with 11 others, of "conspiring to teach or advocate the overthrow of the government by force or violence." He fled but was captured in Mexico, and served eight years at Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary for what he later called "thinking." He was elected Communist Party chairman in 1959 after his release and received the Order of Lenin, the highest medal in the Soviet Union. Before the demise of the Soviet Union, he traveled there annually as an American spokesman for the poor and disenfranchised. Mr. Hall was criticized by other members of the left for not accepting the reforms implemented by Western Europe's Communist Parties in the late 1960s and 1970s and for not modernizing the U.S.

party. In 1972, when he first ran for president, Mr. Hall said he would launch a rapid program to improve the United States. On the first day, he said, he would order U.S. troops out of all foreign countries, close domestic military bases, and shut down the FBI and CIA; on the second day, he would spend all the money he saved on the first day on housing, hospitals and roads.

"Gus Hall will be greatly missed by the progressive movements and our party," said Sam Webb, the national chairman of the Communist Party, in a statement. "Through all the turmoil of McCarthyism, the Reagan years of attacks on labor, and 1 the setbacks to socialism," Webb said, "Hall helped our party maintain a clear, stable focus in the working class, and the people's movements for peace, social justice and socialism." Mr. Hall lived in suburban Yonkers, N.Y., where he said he and his wife, Elizabeth, were accepted by their neighbors. But in chats with strangers on a plane or train, he said in a 1987 interview, many were incredulous when he spoke of his job. "Many say they never met a real live communist before," he said.
