If you want to buy clothes hy these young designers here in England, your best bet is one of the dozens of small boutiques around town. One of "in" ones now is Topgcar on Kings Road it is run by James Wedge, who has a reputation for slightly mad hats, but the shop also stocks clothes and shoes. There are many others in that area. Or go to narrow Carnaby Street, which is literally wallpapered with boutique's stocked with kicky clothes for young people of both sexes. Tuffin and Foale just opened a boutique off Carnaby Street, a sort of outlet store with their designs on pipe racks inside a tiny shop with a big pop art sign in red and blue lights outside.

YOUTH REVIVAL On to the couture which Is experiencing a youth revival. Hardy Amies and Norman llaitncll are the two royal dressmakers, hut they no longer insist on dressing all English women like the Queen Mother. The specialty in the English couture at this moment is coats and suits with racy modem lines. There are few traces left of middle-aged Sussex ladies in serviceable tweeds or dowagers in flowered hats and print afternoon dresses inside the salons. The London couture cannot really compete with the Paris couture in the international market.

But its designers are making the British ladies extremely happy. Besides Amies and the top couture designers here are Ronald Patterson. Michael and Give. A JOLTING NOTE Men's attire also has undergone a revolution. Hardy Amies, who designs men's clothes, too, has just won ar award in England for his hflucnce in removing some of the stuffed-shirt atmosphere in male attire and making it younger.

The jolting note in London to me is the long hair worn by so many of the young men it's an arty affectation that Is ridiculous. Many courting couple have identical hairstyles and I saw other couples where the young man's bair was longer than his date's.
