In 1959 she married a widower, Harold Lazarow, and helped rear his 2 children Larry and Sheila. He would have been 88 years old on Sept. 15.

He is survived by his wife, Helen (Gantz), daughter Jane Charley, 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by 2 stepdaughters Judy Turner and Patricia Erdwein, 5 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Cash is survived by 2 sisters Etta Barber and Lea Morgan, and 4 surviving brothers Bill, Rudy, Stanley and Kelly. In 1971 he was preceded in death by his first wife Ruth and his brother Dutch. Cash was born in Poughkeepsie, NY and moved with his family to the Chadds Ford area in 1919.

He developed an interest in sports- he played on Chris Sanderson's basketball tearn, the Lenape Indians, and wresteled at the Wilmington YMCA. In 1936 he qualified for the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team, but had to decline traveling to Europe because of the expense. Cash enlisted in the U.S. Army on 3 different tours where he served in Panama and Hawaii.

He then returned to the states where he was introduced to John B. Kelly from who because of Cash's athletic background, took an interest in him and steered Cash into becoming a Fairmount Park Guard. In April of 1948, Cash was leaving his shift near the Schuvikill River Dam in the Boat House Row area and noticed that a small child had fallen into the river. He immediately dove in and they both traveled over the dam where Cash struggled to bring the young boy to the river bank. The boy died before arriving at the hospital and Cash remains the only person who has lived after going over the dam.

He received the Philadelphia Inquirer Hero Award and a special commendation from the Park Guard Commissioner. Cash served as the Woodland Baptist Church treasurer for close to 40 vears and recently was presented with a plaque from the Woodbury YMCA for being an inspirational and faithful, almost-daily swimmer for the last 20 vears. Cash retired from the Park Guards in 1962, then worked in the Auto Loan Department of Girard Bank until retirement in 1976. Since retirement, Cash and his wife have traveled extensively, he has continued his love of gardening and numerous weekly pinochle card games. Most importantly, he will be remembered for how he has shared his love of life and exemplary values with his family.
