His funeral was attended by many mourners of both races, including his old master Jefferson Davis. Said Mr. Davis at the grave: I have bad in my life many true and faithful friends, but none more faithful than he whom this day we have laid to rest." That's the story as offered by the Chicago Tribune take it or leave it.

Childbirth MASTER AND SLAVE The traditional friendship between white and colored races in Mississippi has been emphasized by a recent feature item published in the Chicago Tribune.

It concerns Jefferson Davis and his faithful Negro 6lave, Benjamin Montgomer. Whether true or not, the story Is heart warming and of interest to Mississippians who cherish the tradtitions of the Old South. Following is the gist of the Chicago Tribune UNIQUE PROPOSITION When Confederate armies tarted suffering major reverses in the Civil War, there was a fear among Southern leaders that the Federal government would come along and confiscate their lands. Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy, owned considerable plantation property near Vicksburg, directly in the line of Grant's impending campaign. It was a faithful Negro slave, Benjamin Montgomery, secretary and bookkeeper to Mr.

Davis, who thought up a way to tave his master's lands. He went to Mr. Davis and said: "The Yankees are going to eize your properties. Why don't jfou pretend to sell them to me?" SECRET AGREEMENT Mulling over this startling pro-fjosition, Jefferson Davis replied: "A slave cannot own land under Mississippi law." "President Lincoln has issued proclamation freeing slaves behind Southern lines." Montgomery pointed out. "Give me my papers of freedom and we can make the deal" So Jefferson Davis freed Benjamin Montgomery.

He lent the Negro $10,000 to buy the Davis properties, exacting a promis-ory note for another $20,000 due in 10 years. Then they signed secret papers retuxnbg the lands to Mr. Davis. YANKEES FOILED A week after Grant captured Vicksburg, in 1863 so the story goes, a U. S.

Treasury agent appeared and started proceedings to confiscated Mr. Davis plantation holdings. Montgomery, the freed slave, promptly showed up and registered a protest. "Jefferson Davis owns no land in these parts," said Montgomery to the Federal agent. "It nil belongs to me now." He then showed legal documents to establish his ownership.

The Federal agent departed and Montgomery managed the Vicksburg Kidnap Case Is Upheld without fear The Mississippi Supreme Courtj Guire could not be charged with more than simple assault or as Monday upheld the kidnap conviction of a Vicksburg man accused of trying to entice a 9-year-old sault and battery. Only this story had a slightly different ending. We have heard many times that Huey Long, while Governor of Louisiana, entrusted certain friends with considerable sums of cash, so that his true wealth could not be ascertained by investigators and tax collectors. Tradition has ft that Huey once handed a stenographer in his office a large roll of brand new $100 bills, with instructions to keep it safely for him. It was strictly secret, with nothing at all in writing THE GAL LOOKED BLANK One fine day, the Kingfish had occasion to use the money he had entrusted to the young lady's care. "Okay, baby," Huey is supposed to have said, "Cough up." The stenographer looked blank, demanding to know what on earth her boss was talking about.

Huey raged, cussed and pleaded (so they say) but all in vain. Of course she lost her job, but so what? Somefhere, in a safe place known only to her, was enough cash to support the young lady in comfort for quite a spell. Or so the story goes. Some folks down in Louisiana swear it is true. Others say it is merely another of many vicious liescir-culated against one of the most controversial figures in Southern political history.
