17, 1940. Southern Scores Four Times On Passes For Win Lafayette, Oct. 14 Mississippi Southern unleashed a terrific third quarter passing attack for four touchdowns and a 25-0 victory over Southwestern Louisiana Institute in a Gulf States Conference football game here tonight. A crowd of 11.000 saw the Southerners tally on the second play of the second half and go on to win behind fleet footed left half-back John "Bubber" Phillips. The two schools batted to a standstill in the scoreless first half but Southern dominated play in the all important third period.

Southern's first tally came when Phillips took a flat pass and weav-ed 35 yards to score. Right halfback Frank Soruiell's try for extra point went wide. Minutes later Southern tallied again on a 67 yard sustained drive. Fullback Cliff Arnold went over Oalces Leads All Scorers In Big Eight By The ASSOCIATED PRESS Houston Oakes, Jackson's star back, took a firmer hold on the lead in the Mississippi Big Eight scoring race last night. He boosted his total to 57 points by making all his team's points fii beating Greenville 21-13.

Roy Moran of Greenwood took second place with his 42 points. He made 24 as his tearrj beat Vicks-burg 45-6. Clarksdale's James Kelly is third with 40, eight coming in his team's 20-7 victory over Columbus. Oakes' 21 points also enabled him to regain first place in scoring in all games. His grand total for the season against all opponents is 71.

Kelly is second with 70. Here's the way they stand in Big Eight games only: Tp PatTp Houston Oakes, Jackson 8 9 57 fry 1 J-yj "'WA Sv vsJBer HALFBACK LARRY COUTRE (24) of Notre Dame nimbly changes direction as he starts on an 81-yard touchdown run against Tulane in first quarter of their game at South eBnd, Saturday. It was one of three he scored in first ten minutes of the game. Co-Captoin Jim Martin of Notre Dame is blocking out Tulane back Bobby Jones. Guard Fred Wallner of Notre Dame is prepared to take out Max Druen, Tulane tackle.

ENTRIES IN vA Kentucky Takes It Easy In Game With Citadel; Wins 44-0 Lexington, Oct. 16 Wl Kentucky relaxed against the Citadel tonight but unloosed a ground attack strong enough to carry it to a 44-0 victory and it fifth football win this season as many starts.

Kentucky started its scoring in the first 23 seconds, picking up two points on a safety and then accounting for three touchdowns in each half. Reserves carried a big portion of the last half burden. The outmanned Citadel club threatened only once, moving to the Kentucky one in the second period after recovering Jim Howe's fumble at the six. Dick Zelinski's fourth down smash was stopped cold at the one and Kentucky moved it out of danger. Kentucky, eighth rated nationally in the Asociated Press poll, stuck on the ground for five of its touchdowns and took to the air only in the second period on Babe Paril-li's pass to Wilbur Jamerson that covered 11 yards.

at Summit, had a fair 2 and 1 record before Saturday night and the Decatur Warriors had a 4-0 mark. So what Summit, once the step-cousin of the loop, wins 6 to 0. Ellisville (Jones) Jaycee hadn't as yet won a game and was playing an up-and-down Goodman (Holmes) aggregation and the once-powerful Bobcats found some of their old form by trouncing the Bulldogs, who weren't biting, 20 to 7. Our congratulations go to Dr. E.

E. Litkenhous Clarion Ledger's gridiron expert, for correctly calling the SMU defeat by Rice. In Friday's paper, Dr. Litkenhous picked Rice by 7.1 points (and he was crazy, we said so ourself) and then Rice crossed him up TOO by getting a 14-point victory. But, he doesn't bet just predicts.

That's cheap! from the one. Right halfback Ed Langford booted the extra point to give the Southerners a commanding 13-0 lead. Midway the third period Phillips took a flat pass from quarterback Tom Legros and slithered down the right sideline for 37 yards and a touchdown. Langford's try for extra point was blocked. Legros hurled a 67 yard pass to Langford late in the third period for the final Southern tally.

Langford missed the try for extra point. Louisville Defeats Newton Tigers, 19-6 Louisville, Oct. 16 The Louisville Wildcats invaded the Newton Stadium Friday night and won a hard-fought 19 to 6 victory. Harold Crowson. fullback, accounted for all three of the Wildcats' touchdowns.

He scored in the first and second quarters on 1-yard plunges and added his final touchdown in the fourth quarter on a ten-yard smash over the center of the line. Newton scored their touchdown in the second quarter on a Dalton-Wall pass. SEC STANDINGS CONFERENCE Pet. PF Kentucky Tulane Tennessee Vandcrbilt Ga. Tech Georgia Mlsisslppl Frorida Miss.

The Wildcats have won but a single conference game this year, (Gulfnort 21 to 0) but lost to Laurel but by a single touchdown this past week.

Word creeping from Lauderdale county said that the Cats are truly pointing for this Big one. They will be playing at home, are not in the least overconfident and are extremely determined like a 10-year old asking Pa for admission price to a Saturday western. They just ain't agonna give up! Had an enjoyable conversation with Frank Sargent Friday via telephone. Frank, sports editor of the Lowell (Mass.) Sun, covered the Ole Mlss-BC game for The Clarion Ledger. Fans will remember that Frank spent over a week in Jackson last December covering the Lowell-Bogalusa Memorial Bowl game and has a number of friends here.

One of his first questions had to do with the Touchdown Club and Jackson Central High. Upon being told that the Tigers had won six straight he couldn't help but tell about his Lowell team. That group of boys have won four straight and yesterday (Sunday) were to play Salem the only team that a Lowell team coached by Hal Reddick has never defeated. In '48 Salem tied Lowell 7-7 for the only mark on an otherwise perfect record. That junior college conference Is evenly matched this year too close for comfort, so to speak.

After five weeks of Dlav. no team is undefeated. Southwest, down there By WAYNE THOMPSON 'Guess Coach Doss Fulton can quit talking about Tiger Stadium never being sold out for a Central High football game, and our heartiest congratulations go to him! That place Friday night was packed fuller than a college sophomore in last "year's strapless formal, and every one of them saw a great football game. Deacon Charlie Kerg, of the Greenville press, which had stirred white heat In attempting to "write up" a victory before the game started well, he was at the game In his usual two chairs and ''was deeply thrilled. As we packed tip our gear and started being shoved toward the exits, Charlie's parting repartee was "Well, you didn't run over us." No, Charlie, we didn't.

It counts as much if you run around opposition and Is far, far easi-i er on old clothes. But, we were talking about the crowd at the game and we are inighty anxious to find out if more than 9,000 people were not at the game. Fulton has stated that per-manent seats hold 9,000 and by Careful checking we have found Out that the West Side was filled to capacity and we could see from AW 1 Al A -r-i i r-i 1 i press uu.v uihi uie tuai oiae was overflowing. Central faces another Big Eight (een) opponent this week, and in addition to being one in the northern division is a team that had rather beat the Tigers (now) than to have the chorus line of Radio City as team sponsors. That team Is Meridian, and until the Bengals broke the jinx last year (7-6)), that 1 LITTLE SPORT Men Wanted To train for Radio Broadcast EngtaMr.
