Others in thP It must be the granddaddy of them all, this big old catfish, pulled from the Mississippi River late Sunday afternoon through the combined efforts of Dave Emerson, pictured with the fish and Mike Mangan. Emerson and Mangan were dozing in the warm sun in a boat in the middle of the channel just opposite Guttenberg, when the tug that must have almost capsized the craft, came on the line. Realizing they had something a bit out of the ordinary, the two Sumner fishermen battled briskly, but patiently to keep from losing the big fish. Their efforts were rewarded with what surely has to be a near record catch, if not actually the record in recent seasons.

Back in Sumner, already partially dried out from the, trip, the fish still tipped the scale at about 20 pounds. It measured 32 inches from head to tail and by pulling the "whiskers" forward was a full three feet. It was a full seven inches across the head. Incidentally, it wasn't the only fish caught by Emerson and Mangan and in an exceptionally lucrative fishing day. also pulled In 25 striped bass.
