people Garden club offers guides for care of summer plants Final plans for the Chillicothe Garden Club flower show at 1 the American Legion hall June 15 were made at the club's meeting Tuesday. A luncheon will be served at p.m. before the show by the Legion auxiliary and reservations, to be made before June 11, may be made by calling Mrs. Virgil Hallenberg, Mrs. George Troeger or Mrs.

Archie Campbell. Mrs. Earl Whiteside presided at the meeting and the club's beautification project at Fastview Heights Community Center was discussed. Mrs. Esther Glover, chairman, reported that her committee has planted six Eutin roses at the Center entrance.

Under the direction of Mrs. Ewing, children and youth at the area are responding with enthusiasm to the project, it was reported. Mrs. Glenn Merriman reported for the flower distribution committee that 25 bouquets had been taken to shut-ins. Mrs.

J. W. Moore said her committee has planted the urns at the Courthouse plaza and asked for volunteers to help with their care. The "Now is the Time" report by Mrs. H.

Miller stressed the importance of continuing control of weeds, especially dandelions, which have been unusually heavy and persistent over all the city. Mrs. Miller said now is the time to apply the first spray for soil webworms. She said roses should now be fed, treated for insects and mildew and watered. as sub-soil is still deficient in moisture in spite of recent rains.

Mrs. Miller pointed out that faded blooms should be clipped the first five leaves. "Hedges now the need trimming. leaving wider than the top to allow sun to reach the leaves." she said. Members were reminded that mulching of plants is than hoeing and conserves moisture.

"Tall garden plants should be staked to prevent damage by wind and rain, and many busby plants, especially chrysanthemums, should be pinched back at this time. Early blooming bulbs, such as jonquils, can now be moved or divided." she said. Friendly Neighbors hear of Africa trip Mrs. Austin entertained members of the Friendly Neighbors Club at her home Wednesday afternoon. Eight members and five guests were present, Mrs.

Inez Crookshank. Mrs. David Cramer, Mrs. Sue Jones, Miss Kara Austin and Mrs. John Davis.

Mrs. Robert Kirtley, president, gave the devotion on and conducted a business meeting. Miss Kara Austin presented a program, showing slides and telling of her experiences a trip to Africa where she visited Kenya, Tanganyika and Uganda. She visited several national parks and described the birds and animals native to that section. On her return she stopped over in Athens, Greece, and Brussels, Belgium.

Mrs. Bill Cramer, Mrs. Sue Jones and Mrs. Inez Crookshank drew door prizes. The next meeting will be July 7 with Mrs.

Will Perkins. Eagles announce cancer research aid The Auxilairy of the local Eagles Lodge No. 2428 presented $300 1 to the Eagles Art Ehrmann Cancer fund of the Fraternal Order of Eagles which will present a $10,000 grant to the Cancer Research Center Columbia. The grant will be made at the state Eagles convention in Salem June 18-20. The fund of the Eagles named in honor of the late Arthur S.

Ehrinann, editor of Eagle publications for 25 years, was established by the Grand Aerie to support cancer research by providing grants to recognized research centers, medical colloges and hospitals. The fund is maintained by voluntary money raising activities in Eagle aeries and auxiliaries, John W. Graham, president of the local lodge said. Do yull have an apartment or: room to rent? Guests Thursday were Mrs.

Roder Nyberg and her daughter, Susan Jones. Susan spent about an hour browsing and buying in the gift shop and visiting with Mrs. Iva Mc Daniels. Susan is a private in the United States Army and asked Mrs. Mc Daniels if she ever considered joining the army.

Susan was so impressed with Mrs. McDaniels' talents and years of perience. The white elephant table is full of items and has lots of books. Any senior citizen who likes a horse show is invited to attend the show Sunday at the 4-H and FFA Fairgrounds arena at 12 noon at half price. Friday evening at 8 o'clock, there will be a card party for all senior citizens at the Center.

The participants have been having some lively pitch and pinochle games. All senior citizens are invited to join in the fun. Thursday afternoon there will be recreation for the nursing home residents. Tuesday afternoon all senior citizens are invited to play cards and checkers at the Center. The Livingston County Council on Aging will meet at the Senior Center at 10 a.m.

Monday. Menus for the week are: Monday: Tuna salad, macaroni and cheese, green beans, wheat bread and margarine, sliced peaches, coffee, tea and milk. Tuesday: Ham and parsleyed potatoes, cottage cheese and pineapple, salad, rolls and margarine, cake, coffee, tea and milk. Wednesday: Fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, slaw, rolls and margarine, fruit pie, milk, tea and coffee. Thursday: Roast beef, oven browned potatoes, breaded tomatoes, celery sticks, rolls and margarine, ice cream, milk, tea and coffee.

Friday: Pork cutlets, baked potatoes, steamed cabbage, corn bread and margarine, gelatin with fruit, milk, tea and coffee. State Auditor George Lehr announced to the news media that he WAS endorsing Charlie Broomfield in the Sixth District Congressional race. The endorsement for the Democartic nomination for the seat now held by Congressman Jerry Litton came after a full day of campaigning for Broomfield by the state auditor in his home county. Both Lehr and Broomfield spoke to the Kiwanis Club and then Lehr's mother, Mrs. E. E.

Lehr, hosted a reception for her son and Broomfield. The two then attended a reception at Northeast Missouri State U'niversity. In endorsing Broomfield. Lehr had this to say in statement: have known Charlie personally as a teacher of American government. AS an outstanding legislator.

Democratic Women discuss Bicentennial activities Livingston County Women's Democrat Club met Thursday evening in the Community room of the Chillicothe State Bank with 21 members attending. Mrs. Willa Jane Smith presided at the meeting, discussing plans for Bicentennial activities and celebration July 1 through July 4.

Mrs. Ann Vinson gave a report on the Sixth district congressional meeting held May 25. Mrs. Margaret Frith reported on the Livingston County Health Unit, and Mrs. Madeline Hawkins gave deadlines for voter registration.

Ms. Smith also announced that the next meeting will include a picnic to be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 29, at the Wheeling shelter house. Hostess for the evening was Lena Smithson. Cowere Donna Lewis, Margaret Frith, Harriet Kirby, Eemlia Leech and Mary Lou VanDeventer.

She told that women who volunteer to do work in the organization should be capable of expressing themselves, willing to take definite stands on certain questions, and should show humility as instructed by the apostle Paul. Mrs. Herman Braun dismissed the meeting with prayer.

The next regular meeting will be with Mrs. Lowe in Chillicothe. Morse family holds reunion The Morse family reunion was held May 30 in Griffith Park at Dawn. Those present from the Dr. George, Gladys Morse Morse family and Glenn were Hanks, Kim and Jeff.
