FLUEHR AND SONS INC. 215-624-5150 Death Notices Death Notices Death Notices Obituaries Joseph Potamkin, 87, D-Day veteran, POW By Louise Harbach INQUIRER SUBURBAN STAFF Joseph Potamkin, 87, of Marlton, a machine gunner who landed on Omaha Beach at dawn on D-Day and was captured by the Germans a day later, died Thursday at West Jersey Hospital Marlton. Mr.

Potamkin, a native of Philadelphia, stormed Omaha Beach with the 29th Infantry Division about 6 a.m. June 6, 1944. Although more than 90 percent of the unit became casualties, Mr. Potamkin was not injured in the landing and the battle for control of the beach and the area above it, said his son-in-law, Herbert Rennie. "After fighting all day and into the night, my father-in-law and three of his buddies dug themselves foxholes and went to sleep," Rennie said.

"The next morning, he woke up with guns in his face." He never learned the fate of the others in nearby foxholes. Mr. Potamkin survived more than 300 days in German prisoner-ofwar camps until Russian troops liberated him in eastern Germany in In the Region James T. Murphy Retired engineer, 86 James T. Murphy, 86, of Drexel Hill, a retired mechanical engineer, died Thursday at Delaware County Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Murphy was a 1932 graduate of West Catholic High School for Boys and attended Drexel Institute of Technology, now Drexel University. He first went to work at the Frankford Arsenal in 1939. In 1943, he transferred to the Aeronautical Engineering Laboratory at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and received his certification as a professional engineer. From 1960 until his retirement in 1980, he was an aerospace engineer with the Naval Air Technical Services Facility in Philadelphia.

Mr. Murphy had a lifelong interest in Irish and Irish-American history and music. He was a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Philadelphia. Mr.

Murphy's first wife, Margaret McGrath Murphy, died in 1988. They had been married for 38 years. He is survived by his wife of five years, Margaret Sullivan Murphy; sons Thomas James P. and John daughters Elizabeth and Margaret Mary Saunders; and two granddaughters. Friends may call from 9 to 9:45 a.m.

Van Dyke, 79, of Secane, a retired printer, died of cancer Tuesday at Taylor Hospital. Mr. Van Dyke served in the Army National Guard from 1939 to 1969, rising to the rank of major, and was on active duty during World War II in the European, African and Middle Eastern campaigns. He was born in Washington. Mr.

Van Dyke was a printer for Ketterlinus Lithograph Co. in Philadelphia before going to work for Crozer-Chester Medical Center as a printer. He retired in 1982. Mr. Van Dyke received many military decorations and awards, including the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.

He is survived by his wife, Clara Andre Van Dyke, and a daughter, Pamela Andrew Jalbert. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the James F. Knoetgen Funeral Home, 746 Kedron Morton.

Kistler, 74, of Naples, who formerly lived in Downingtown, cofounder of Kistler-Tiffany Cos. in Wayne, died of cancer Thursday at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Mr. Kistler was born in Newark, N.J., where he graduated from New- April 1945. Mr. Potamkin, who once owned the Triangle Luncheonette in Collingswood and Lynn's Luncheonette in Audubon, worked for the U.S.

Postal Service in Haddonfield for 24 years. He was a sergeant-at-arms at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6295 in Marlton and was a member of the Jewish Community Center in Cherry Hill. He was a Jeopardy! fan and known for his devotion to his family and dry sense of humor, said his daughter, Lisa Bush-Rennie. In addition to his daughter Lisa, Mr. Potamkin is survived by another daughter, Cheryl Schreadley; four grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren; and a sister.

He was the widower of Doris Keenan Potamkin. Friends may call after 9 a.m. tomorrow at the Blake-Doyle Funeral Home, 226 Collings Collingswood, where a funeral service will follow at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Brig. Gen.

William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown. ark Academy. He also graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Mr.

Kistler served in the Army during World War II in Europe. In 1974, he founded his financial services and insurance company with Robert E. Tiffany. In 1991, he retired and moved to Naples. Mr.

Kistler enjoyed golf and was a member of the Whitford Country Club in Exton. He was also a member of the Quail Creek Country Club and the Pelican Bay Country Club, both in Naples. He was a member of the Baptist Church in the Great Valley and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Kistler also belonged to the Million Dollar Round Table and was a past president of the Pennsylvania Association of Life Underwriters.

His wife of 51 years, Lola Penry Kistler, died last year. Mr. Kistler is survived by his daughters, Joan L. Kistler, Jane E. Kistler and Ellen K.

Kunkel; three grandchildren; and two brothers. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Baptist Church in the Great Valley, Valley Forge Road, Devon. Burial will be private in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kistler-Tiffany Foundation, 500 E.
