B4 Suburbs Thursday, February 11, 1999 1 THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER Death Notices Death Notices Death Notices Death Notices Obituaries Morton Mitosky, 91; Broadway investor By S. Joseph Hagenmayer INQUIRER SUBURBAN STAFF Morton Mitosky. 91. a Philadel phia lawyer known for his ability to pick financially successful Broadway shows for himself and other investors, died Friday at Cabrinl Hospital Hospice in Manhattan of complications from a 1997 stroke. He had lived in Ventnor, N.J., for nearly 30 years and also had a residence in Manhattan.

As a lawyer, he maintained offices in Philadelphia and New York for many years. hMr. Mitosky remained active in theater investments, as well as several Hollywood projects, until his stroke. In the 1980s, he was financial cpnservator for famed producer David Merrick. In the 1970s, newspapers called Mr.

Mitosky one of Broadway's top angels among the most consistent and successsful financial backers of shows. He took pains to decline the title, always quick to point out that much of what he did was advising others where to invest their money. A 1965 feature in the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin described him as a "picker of Broadway hits," a man with "a power for theatrical divination" and a "lodestone of luck." In 1962, Mr. Mitosky and his associates were the only investors owning large chunks of the three plays to win New York Drama Critics Circle prizes: A Man for All Seasons, The Night of the Iguana, and, ironically, the musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. In 1965, Mr.

Mitosky's picks included Broadway's top four shows: Hello, Dolly, Barefoot in the Park, Fiddler on the Roof, and Luv. 'Other hits he selected for investors included Guys and Dolls, Pic nic, The Miracle Worker, The Music Man, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, My Fair Lady, and Hair. In a business known for its risk, Mr. Mitosky became a millionaire, and it was said that those he advised also made millions. There were, however, financial failures.

Saratoga lost its entire $400,000 investment, and in 1962 All the Way Home, which won a Pulitzer the year before, lost much of its investment. Mr. Mitosky often expounded on his philosophy for picking plays. While some elements seemed to change with the times and circumstances, he always emphasized that a play "had to start with a good story." Born and raised in Philadelphia, he was. a graduate of Central High School, where he was a tackle on the football team.

He graduated in 1929 from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was on the swimming and water polo teams. He then enrolled in Temple University Law School at night, and pursued a dream during the day of being a newspaper reporter first at the old Public Ledger and then at The Inquirer, the Evening Bulletin, and the Philadelphia Record. His long law career followed. He is survived by his wife, Joy Klein Mitosky; a daughter, Dina; a stepdaughter, Stephanie Klein; a granddaughter; a sister; and a daughter-in-law. Services were held Sunday under the direction of Riverside Memorial Chapels in Manhattan.

By Bill Price INQUIRER STAFF WRITER Caroline Robbins, 95, a professor of history for more than four decades at Bryn Mawr College, died Monday at ManorCare, a nursing facility in King of Prussia. Miss Robbins taught at Bryn Mawr College from 1929 until retiring in 1971. Her husband, Stephen Joseph Herben, a retired English professor at the college, died in 1967.

Throughout the 1940s and '50s, Miss Robbins was a major force in the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians, a group of professional women from various colleges that met in the Northeast to discuss women's issues. "She taught her students the real meaning of female independence," said a former colleague, Arthur Dudden, Fairbank professor emeritus in the humanities at Bryn Mawr. "Her refusal to use her married name in her public life and her insistence on the primary importance of her work seemed more familiar to students today than they did during her years as a professor," Dudden said. "Miss Robbins," he said, "was a demanding teacher who insisted on the exacting reading of texts. She was completely intolerant of laziness, stupid remarks and excuses.

Her manner could be intimidating to the more timid students." Phyllis Lachs, a friend and former student, described Miss Robbins as "a formidable woman" who became beloved by her students. Miss Robbins was named a full professor at Bryn Mawr in 1949 and served as chairwoman of the history department from 1957 to 1969. She was Marjorie Walter Goodhart professor of history from 1960 until her retirement in 1971. She was a founding member of the the Middle Atlantic Renaissance Conference in 1950, held a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1953 and won the Herbert Baxter Adams Prize from the American Historical Association in 1960. Miss Robbins was also a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in England and in 1981 was named a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania.

She received tie American Historical Association's award for scholarly distinction in 1989. She was born in Middlesex, England, and earned her bachelor's and doctoral degrees lrom the University of London. Miss Robbins was well-known for her book The Eighteenth Century Commonwealthman, and she wrote numerous articles on English political and constitutional history covering the reign of Charles II, said Paula Saler, assistant director of public information at Bryn Mawr college. Miss Robbins also wrote articles on English Restoration and Anglo-American intellectual crosscurrents, Saler said. Miss Robbins lived most of her adult life in Ithan and Rosemont.

She moved to ManorCare about six years ago. She is survived by a sister, Nancy Robbins; a brother, Rowland a niece and a nephew. A memorial gathering will be held at Bryn Mawr College at a later date. Weekends All obituaries: 215-854-5099 Wf Weekdays (10:30 a.m.-6 p.m.) Philadelphia: 400 N.
