THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER D14b South Jersey Sunday, March 14, 1999 SOUTH JERSEY SPORTS Paterson Catholic too big for St. Joe in state final The North Jersey team rode its size and strength to a 46-37 victory for the NJSIAA Parochial championship. A i senior. "We knew they were bigger and we had to hit from the outside." Paterson Catholic's Kara Leslie, a 5-11 senior who plans to attend New Hampshire, scored 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and earned game MVP honors. i St.

Joe was hurt most by Xaviera Johnson, a 5-9 senior, who scored 20 points, shooting 6 for 10 from the field and 8 of 10 from the foul line. The Wildcats were led by 5-7 junior Lauren Hickman, who scored 15 points and hit two three pointers. Trailing, 40-33, St. Joe made one final comeback attempt. The Wildcats cut the lead to 40-37 'when Hickman scored four straight points on a layup and two of four free throws, the second foul shot coming with 50 seconds left.

The Cougars would close out the game by scoring the final six points, and the dream season was over for St. Joseph. Before the season, St. Joseph wasn't expected to win its own division, but the Wildcats wound up capturing the Cape Atlantic National Division II and National Conference titles and won their first South Jersey Parochial championship "I am upset we lost, but we had a great season," Dean said. "We won the division, the Cape, and the South Jersey title.

It would have been nice to win here, but we played our hardest and have nothing to be ashamed of." CY Wild TAMMY McGINLEY Inquirer Suburban Stall Laura DiRenzo of St. Joseph gets a step on Paterson Catholic's Kara Leslie in, a drive toward the basket. DiRenzo scored nine points in a loss by St. Joseph In the state Parochial final, High School Scoreboard By Marc Narduccf INQUIRER SUBURBAN STAFF ELIZABETH, N.J. St.

Joseph knew it would be a tall order to win its first state girls' basketball title, but even in defeat, the Wildcats showed the fight that earned them their first berth in the championship game. Trailing by 11 points midway through the first half, St. Joseph came back to make a game of it before falling to Paterson Catholic, 46-37, in yesterday's state Parochial championship at the Dunn Center in Elizabeth. It was the first state title appearance for both teams. Paterson Catholic (254) now advances to the Tournament of Champions, while St.

Joseph finished its season 244. Without a starter taller than 5-foot-8, St. Joe was undersized against virtually every opponent this season, and yesterday was no exception. Paterson Catholic made it difficult to score inside. "Not only did they have good size, but Paterson Catholic was a physical team, and that was tough to contend with," said St.

Joseph coach Kelly Cryan. "We have played some physical teams, but they were also very strong." As a result, the Wildcats had little success driving to the basket and had to settle largely for shooting from the perimeter. It didn't turn out well for St. Joe. 1949: West Orange def.
