Tribune, Jackson County, Ind. Wednesday, April 5, 2006 Page 3A Weather service confirms 3 twisters in state INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The National Weather Service confirmed that three tornadoes hit Indiana during Sunday's storms. Two of the tornadoes were in southern Indiana around the Lawrence County town of Mitchell and at Seymour with the other striking southeast of Lafayette in Tippecanoe County, the weather service said Tuesday. Survey teams Tornado Continued from Page 1A: He and his son, Craig, were busy cleaning up damage to their home Monday morning. The roof must be replaced along with a garage door.

Fencing around a hot tub in back was destroyed, too, and their patio doors were sprung. "It came through here so darned fast," Rita Luedeman said Monday night. The family went to the basement for shelter just as the tornado twisted through the city. Ask folks in their neighborhood, commonly. known as "behind the high school," and many will tell you it's snakebitten.

Residents in the Gorbetts Chapel area of determined that all were F1 tornadoes, with wind speeds between 73 mph and 112 mph. The weather service said winds of at least 100 caused the significant damage in Indianapolis and the Daviess County city of Washington, about 50 miles northeast of Evansville. Dozens of windows were blown out from a downtown Indianapolis skyscraper, western Jackson may tell you the same. But Mike Shartran of the National Weather Service in Indianapolis said such trends or patterns are difficult to support scientifically. "I really couldn't even speculate on that," Shartran said.

"They can happen anywhere, any time, and they do. We really can't say they're more prone to happen in one area than in another area 20 miles away. "You're going to have similar tracks occasionally, but that doesn't mean to say it makes it more likely," he added. Why is it a difficult question? A team of engineers and other experts was expected to' begin evaluating the said. Indiana sees an average of 14 a year. Compare that to temperature norms, where the weather service is using daily reports from many weather observers such as Ruth Everhart of Rockford and of Robert Zollman of Medora every day of the year over 30 years. "We just don't have the data to even speculate," Shartran said. Some Jackson County residents say thunderstorm cells follow the East Fork of the White River, spawning tornadoes.

Craig Luedeman's among them. That, Shartran said, holds building today to develop a plan for making repairs, said Myra Borshoff, a spokeswoman for the owners. "Safety and repair are a priority, but so is helping the tenants get back to work," she said. Sunday night's storm wave destroyed seven homes in Washington and damaged more than 100 others. greater possibility of being accurate, saying he wouldn't dismiss that as a wive's tale.

There could be topographical reasons and other factors that may feed the mix of hot and cold air that lead to tornadoes, and a river could be among them. "But again there's really not a lot of historical data," he added. Shartran pointed out that an area may more often see damage resulting from straight-line winds rather than tornadoes. "They can produce as much if not more damage than a tornado," he said.
