R2 Suburbs THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER Wednesday, October 2, 1996 Death Notices Death Notices captain, died of a heart attack Monday at Bryn Mawr Hospital. He had lived in Wynnewood since he retired in 1975. Born in Muskegon; Capt. Barlow graduated from the Naval Academy at Annapolis, and spent 30 years in the service. He was in Panama during the Korean War and was an air boss on the aircraft carrier USS Independence during the Vietnam War.

He was also a deputy supreme allied commander of NATO's Atlantic fleet. In 1963, Capt. Barlow enjoyed brief celebrity when he flew into a hurricane and seeded it with dry ice in an attempt to disperse it. After his retirement, he spent about five years as an administrator for law firms in Center City. He was a former deacon at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church and a member of the Merion Cricket Club, the Men's Garden Club of the Delaware Valley, the Military Order of the World Wars and Merion American Legion Post 545.

Surviving are his wife, Maryanne Lukens Barlow; sons, Jeffrey Peter and John a daughter, Carol Staniunas; eight grandchildren; and a sister. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, 625 Montgomery Ave. Burial will be in Westminster Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd. 21402. Simone Voisin Smith Retired French professor, 72 Simone Voisin Smith, 72, a retired French professor at Swarthmore College, died of cancer Saturday at her home in Swarthmore. A member of the faculty from 1964 to 1990, she taught French as well as courses on 16th- and 17th-century French literature. Mrs. Smith was a member of the French Resistance during World War II, and with her family worked with a group that tried to protect Jews.

She was severely injured and left for dead when the unit was attacked. She was later awarded the Croix de Guerre and the Medaille de la Resistance. When the war ended, she studied at Columbia University as an exchange student, and was awarded degrees in Latin and Greek from the University of Grenoble. She taught at the Baldwin School and Germantown Friends before joining the Swarthmore staff. She was named professor emerita of French when she retired in 1990.

She is survived by her husband, Jack. A memorial service will be held later. A memorial fund is being set up in her name at the Department of Modern Languages at Swarthmore College, 500 College Swarthmore 19081. Death Notices CASHNER TERESA D. (nee Crossan), on Sept.

Manuel Ruben Sales representative, 73 Manuel "Manny" Ruben, 73, formerly of Havertown and King of Prussia, a retired manufacturer's representative, died Sunday of Lou Gehrig's disease at his home in Oaks, Calif.

Mr. Ruben served in the Air Force during World War II and was held in a German prison camp for a year. He was awarded the Air Medal and Bronze Star. He was a manufacturer's representative selling lighting fixtures before he retired three years ago. Mr.

Frederick J. Gottschalk Retired police officer, 70 Frederick J. Gottschalk, 70, of Ros-lyn, a retired Jenkintown police officer, died Sunday at Abington Memorial Hospital. Mr. Gottschalk served in the Navy from 1943 to 1949 and was aboard an aircraft carrier in the North Atlantic during World War II.

After the war, he worked in the parts departments of several automobile agencies and later for the Abington Township highway department. In 1961, he joined the Jenkintown Police Department, where he served until retiring in 1987. He then worked part-time delivering appliances for Jenkintown Electric Co. and later delivering parts for Gordon Automobile Supply Co. in Willow Grove.

JIe was a Mason. "My father loved to fish and golf, and he was known for his outgoing personality and his whistling," said a daughter, Carol Ann Ward. He also is survived by his wife of 44 years, Betty Ann Marble Gottschalk; two other children, Barbara Lynn Brecher and William and five grandchildren. Mrs. Wendell was born in Pottstown and graduated from the Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr.

Her late husband, James was headmaster of the Hill School from 1928 to 1952. Mrs. Wendell was a founder of the Pottstown Historical Society, which was formed to save and restore Pottsgrove Manor, the home of the borough's founder, John Potts. She was honored as Pottstown Citizen of the Year in 1948, and Gov. Milton J.

Shapp named her a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania in 1975. She was a member and past president of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America. She belonged to Christ Episcopal Church, Pottstown. Surviving are sons, James I. John P.
